Vampires and...

Hi there. I just had an idea the other night for a cool story involving a vampire. Basic premise is that a girl moves back in to her aunt's old house and finds that she's taken in two lodgers. One of them is a vampire, the other is...See, I don't know what he should be. Something supernatural, but I feel like the whole werewolf/vampire thing is a little worn out (thank you teams Edward and Jacob). The being which occurred to me is a fairy, one of the old school who may not be as nasty as the vampire I have in mind (no sparkles on this one), but still a force to be reckoned with. Anyone have any other idea what my second tenant could be?

Vampires are usually feed on energy more than blood depending on which vain of the lore you choose to follow (pun intended, sorry).

Given that, fairies or ghosts would not be a good idea. Anime has a thing for magic vs undead, could your other person be a wizard perhaps?

I don't think this question can be answered until you decide what the relationship between the two individuals will be. Are they antagonists? Are the collaborators and co-conspirators? Are they stuck in some sort of unpleasant but symbiotic relationship?

After you decide on the nature of their relationship, then you can consider candidate species for the second character.

I should have mentioned that the two will be rivals. The vamp is going to represent the darker parts of sexuality, obsession, pain/pleasure, etc, and the other will be representative of love, connection, giving, etc.

There was a storyteller at the Bristol RenFair who had a whole slew of stories based on a conflict between vampires and faries that was really interesting.

But I digress as I don't think fairies should be the other supernatural element because there are too many extreme different points of views regarding them.

I think a counterbalance to the vampire would be nice. Have them respectful rivals that have declared the house neutral ground but are at odds with each other beyond the house. Why would they stay in the house? That is part of the mystery and have it revolve around the history of the aunt and her own dealings with the supernatural. Perhaps she is a powerful witch who made the house a sanctuary and thus these two powerful entities actually feel safer here than anywhere else.

So who could the other entity be? A liche, a powerful undead sorceror? A mummy, fully sentient, looks nothing like a mummy, exotic and charming?

Definitely avoid fairies, there are only two kinds of fairies, the trickster fairy that doesn't do anything unless it can laugh about it. The other fairy is well there are two schools of thought on it, one says the other fairy is like a vampire in most of the stories, controlling and devious, the other school says they make a bloodthirsty vampire look like a really really nice guy.

Mummy would be a good choice, except well dang, unlike the movie The Mummy they don't pretty up, they stay dessicated corpses. Not to say you can't pretty them for the story but not a mummy, they are protectors, guardians nothing more. Zombies are mindless with but one purpose, a revenant is not a bad idea except they are smarter mummies, they wouldn't call a place neutral territory, they have a one track mind protect whatever kept them somewhat alive.

An incubus would not be a bad idea, they are demons but they only wish to feed on lust. Well there are various schools of thought on that as well, but for simplicity they only strive to feed on one thing, don't care who gives it to them. Ghouls are zombies that can't be controlled and only live to eat flesh alive or dead. A mage of some sort would be a good choice, alternately witch and you have the niece trying to decide if she likes men or women better.

I know I'm not helping much but I narrowed it a bit so I guess I helped. If you want more I'll have to rack my brain and remember the other fantasy creatures.

I had this vision of the other tenant being a kind of low-key seemingly normal guy, someone who's lived in the town forever. Maybe he owns the second-hand bookshop. My idea was that the reader doesn't find out about his supernatural nature until things get ugly with the vampire, maybe halfway in. As to his species, the fairies I was thinking about were the green men or some kind of forest spirit, but I see the point of not wanting to go against the usual folklore. Mummies are a definite possibility. I thought about angels, but they're not generally known for their sexual prowess. Some kind of magic user could also definitely work.

Also, to explain the coincidence of two supernatural beings sharing the same roof, I was thinking about the house being built upon some kind of sacred ground that is attractive to both men.

The other should be a Jedi Knight, who gets bitten by the vampire, turns to the dark side, and becomes a Sith Lord Vampire.

Low key seemingly normal would almost have to be a mage of some sort. Forget fairies, they are all small especially the green ones, they are about three feet tall very ugly and mean. In Germany they are called gnomes, and aren't green but same basic idea. Forget Tolkien and Grimm, fairies are almost exclusively bad news, course they also have almost no interest in people besides leprechauns.

Leprechauns would come close to low key, except they only care about getting more gold. Can't stay a normal second hand bookstore if your a leprechaun. Besides they are tricksters, causing accidents, handing out wishes and then twisting them for a laugh, that is a leprechaun.

Anyway beyond fairies really the only thing that works is a mage. Angels depend on which era of the writings your looking at, old text angels were sex mad, they would fuck anything with a pulse. Possible you have say a half angel, I forget the term given to those. They are like regular people but have power they don't like to use. Certain rulers from history were thought to be half angel. They don't like to use their powers because they are stuck on earth until they die, depends on which story you want to listen to. Some say they are immortal, some say they are just like regular people here to make the world better so on so forth.

Some of the older gods before christianity it's possible to include them as the other guy. Cupid for obvious reasons could still be around, Pan and the drink happy one, I forget his name. Cupid wouldn't be a bad choice, he's the god of love after all, well one of them. Pan could be a problem, he was a trickster but if your careful you can include him. The drink happy one, well he was all about pleasure and well I don't know it could work.

Alternate gods, Thor and Loki. Not really working in the same house and you wanted a vampire anyway. Thor would make a good alternate boyfriend, he's all about right and good and all that fun stuff, good counterpoint to a vampire. I could talk Egyptian except damn all of them were married and a few had a harem.

Emap was maybe thinking about Bacchus. I think a hedonist would indeed like sex a lot and he has been depicted with cupid so would be a good alternative - assuming he avoids the "brewers droop"

Bacchus was also often seen in the company of satyrs, and maybe even centaurs...is it stretching credibility to have them as lodgers? They could be part of a dream sequence anyway. I have fond memories of reading an erotic story belonging to a friend's Dad. The story featured a centaur and a girl who finally met her match...

The War Hound and the World's Pain does have a Lucifer inspired story where the Barons of Hell revolt against him for attempting to reconcile with God.

Might be worth looking into if you depart from the vampire b.s. that's plaguing everyone. If you want a good vampire story, start with Forever Knight.

An angel like Islington from Neverwhere, not part of the original rebellion in heaven but another angel being punished for a completely different failure. I like that idea. He is carrying out an agenda that can be masked... is it for good or for ill, out of greed or a desire to regain favor with the heavenly host?
