I'm going to guess your phrasing wasn't quite in the GB style. It could be entertaining to try to revise your query to tempt the GB denizens.

I suppose I could have gotten more of a response if I'd started it with "Hey all you dick-sucking cuck lovers" but it didn't occur to me to do that at the time. You live and learn.

Yeah, but you might be more comfortable with something subtler:

Need "volunteers" for a "study" of XXXeroticaXXX!!! Cum tell me all your FILTHY little word-porn secrets. I wanna know it "EVERYTHING!":devil: I wanna know how you "click" it. Do you go down nice and slow, or do you hit it hard and run? (*wink*) Talk to me about your STAMINA. Do you have what it takes to see it through to the end? Do you "bump and grind" your way to the finish? Or do you take that long, smooth slide "home?":heart: Tell me every dirty little thing you do afterward. I wanna hear about the messy-sloppy aftermath. Do you push that button, bad boy? Hmmm? You can tell me. (*wink*) Since you don't leave money, honey, how about a note on the way out the door? Gonna tell me if I was your good girl? Gonna make me purr like a kitty? :cattail: Or do you want to rub my face in my mistakes, show me who' s a bad girl? Make F***ING sure I'll never make that mistake again! Just give it to me, baby, I wanna "hear" it. So cum on, fess up and tell me everything. I'll be waiting...

Luv,
Simon

Now I'm going to go and wash my brain out with soap.

My questions, for the sake of gathering anecdotal information on this topic, are these:

For every story you click on, how many do you read to the end?

For every story you read, how many do you vote on?

I have no hard and fast data on my own habits. I'm guessing, somewhat. But my guess is that I read no more than one-tenth the number of stories I click on.

When someone asks me to edit or betaread, I not only read the draft but also read a good cross-section of their published stories. So in this instance, I not only read from beginning to end but also sometimes re-read to analyze the writer’s style. When I’m not reading as an editor and just reading for my own enjoyment, I still try read any story I select all the way through, even if the story’s not very good—I’m a very fast speed reader, fairly selective about what I choose to read and usually bad stories aren’t very long.

Ninety-nine percent of the time, I don’t vote. Votes are used for contests—at minimum, every story submitted to the site with voting enabled is in the annual and monthly highest-rating contest! Since I’m an actively publishing author, I don’t think it’s fair to vote since my submissions are in the very same competitions. And each vote can change the tide: too many 5-stars, regardless of now deserved, can make a story a target, or if the story’s hovering around an “H” a 4-star can damage the writer’s chances of getting that mark, etc etc. Although my assumption is that it’s all a wash after multiple votes and sweeps, some authors have said that it’s not, and they’ve never had a 1-bomb removed from a score. I don’t want to risk doing anything that could effect someone’s chances of winning when we’re all in competition together.

I think there are a lot of people who read who don't vote.

Problably because they think their vote doesn't matter or 'what's the point' if the score is already good.

It reminds me of youtube. The vast majority don't vote (a thumbs up), and I rarely do, though I wish I did more (and I'm voting often now).

Very few I will read to the end. OMG very few. But if I do I always vote and to be honest its normally a 5 but I will 4 if the plot is good enough to read but their are annoying errors like head hopping. I wouldnt vote on a story I had not read to the end so by default as I stop reading stories I dont like I dont vote low as I dont vote.

I click and start to read because of a high score or a tag. I want to do a romance story but it will include exploring kink. So to look at categories I went to romance then the tag BDSM and looked for one shots with a decent rating. Well that depressed me as I didnt manage to finish one story. All I wanted to know is are the romance category readers open to stories discussing, exploring and trying some of the more hard core kink. Either those stories rate badly in romance or they dont exist

You might have better luck in Mature - the readers there are more open minded and will accept a bit more "mix it up" in their fare. Romance seems to be a bit more purist in terms of tissues and kittens, I think, aka vanilla.

"Gosh," said Suzie, "Nyx got a bit excited there!"

"That's what Simon's experiments do to you," EB replied.

We're coming to take you away, ha ha, hee hee, we're coming to take you away!

:)

I've always looked forward to my eventual confinement. I ask only the following:

  • No feathers in the padding on the walls
  • Satin straight jacket, preferably in a jewel tone
  • Tea parties
  • Not to be next door to the guy who thinks he's God

The satin straitjacket is a nice touch, and I'm sure can be arranged. Beware the dormouse in the teapot.

Your last bullet reminds me of the film buff who arrives at the Pearly Gates and says to Saint Peter, "Hey, is that Stanley Kubrick over there?"

"No, that's God. He just thinks he's Stanley Kubrick."

I am adding that to my collection of insanity jokes.

One of my favorite jokes is a psychiatrist giving a tour of a sanitarium to a colleague. He introduces his friend to one patient who explains that he's the king. The visiting psychiatrist asks the patient why he believes he's the king. The patient says, "Because God told me." An indignant voice from down the hall calls out, "That's ridiculous! I did not!"

I would consider any tea party without a dormouse substandard. If the dear little thing is going to come in a teapot, though, it might be best to have two teapots: one with dormouse and one with tea. I shall name the dormouse Jennifer or Matthew, depending on how it identifies. Hopefully, at craft time, I can make Jennifer/Matthew a little straw boater hat.

Yes, I think I'm going to like it there.

I think I usually see it the other way around. A lot of stories in kink categories are romances.

EoN yes thou I wanted to do a romance or at least try.
EB my characters are late twenties and similar ages, so mature might be a stretch lol. First chapter is pure kittens of the vanilla variety but not sure of the etiquette of swapping categories for each chapter.

Anyway it has coloured my viewing clicks, reading and votes as I try and figure it out

I've seen stories with the chapters in different categories. I've seen people say it's not a good idea, but I don't think I've ever seen them say why it isn't a good idea. It seems to me like a good way to pick up a more diverse readership. I'm sure someone will be able to jump in with whatever the counterargument is.

I think the Romance category tolerates a bigger variety of stories than they used to. What they are most open to are traditional Romances; a man and woman who don't previously know each other develop a mutual interest, but then have to struggle through obstacles to build a relationship and live happily ever after. Sex is usually straight, limited, and not kinky.

If you want to add a kink, you can put romantic stories and even Romances in just about any category. There are quite a few in I/T, GM and Lesbian, for instance.

Romances are easy. It's harder to find a place for the classic tragedy.

No, that wouldn't gather any useful information there either.

Probably better could be inflammatory political approach, something in swing with:

"Do idjit Dems click on more stories than deplorables? Is it racist to not vote?"

GB is dominated by a handful of Trump loving trolls and a slightly larger but significantly less vocal group that love to provoke them. And then I suppose there's people visiting just for the picture treads, judging by few rare comments on those, that's a completely different group altogether.

(And by the way, Politics Board is half abandoned place that see little of the shit slinging of the GB (maybe except if it spills over sometimes) and more featuring declarative single author treads.)

That's for LW....you want to get the GB going just title the thread

"Trump...."

Yes, I think I'm going to like it there.
Jenny turned to Matthew as he rowed their little boat. "Isn't this grand? We're alive because of a crazy woman with her arms in a strap and a doctor with a clipboard taking notes."

"That's exactly how I started," said Suzie, spinning by, looking adorable. "And now, look at me, I've got my own cam channel and a line in Daddy Bear tee-shirts. Life's wonderful when your author's insane. And penguins. It was something to do with penguins."

Simon looked up. This meant it was nearly time for his mom to bring tea.

Carry on, Nyx. You're doing fine ;).

I guess I thought that among all the numbers there must be SOME readers. I mean why would you come to Literotica in the first place? There are infinitely many other social media available on which to bleat one's weird political obsessions.

A few years back the GB was more of a mixed bag. Now its nothing but political spew and porn link threads.

There are a handful of writers there, about that much for readers, but most come there to spew and fight and create alts and try to out each other's alts.

These are the type of people who are so toxic they have been kicked off of any legit media platform that has moderation and all found their way here.

They not only don't act like lit is a story site, but most get pissed off about all the porn threads...the nerve of porn threads on an erotic story site. They also have low opinions of anyone here for fetish forums and etc...

The funniest thing is how self important they are. You can easily see these people getting whipped on at work or at home, or where ever, but here? I'm "Trumpssweatynutsack and I'm somebody here!"

If you try to recruit EoN to your side of this daft little penguin/Suzie joust thing we've got going, I'm going to call foul.

EoN, don't get sucked in.

And, by the way, mom knows enough to bring me coffee, not tea. Unsugared, black as tar, and hot enough to scare away timid marsupials.

You're quite right about that; I'd overlooked that. Both the politics and general boards these days seem primarily to be about somebody mentioning the name of Trump and then posts following the mention of his name pretty much saying "You suck" "No, you suck."

"I am not a chicken," the penguin insisted. "You'd think he'd know feathers by now."

EB made a note. Coffee. Simon's mom winked. She still had the Polaroids, but didn't want to shock her delicate son.

The coffee pot burbled. "My god," said the dormouse, "this gets so very confusing. I thought it was tea."

I'm appalled. In a situation like that, the correct thing to do is call "fowl."

Also, I should point out that it appears that he's offering two dormice, or possibly one with two personalities. I like dormice. I like multiple personalities. You seem to already have a dormouse, although not for long if you don't rescue it from the coffee.

I would give my avatar's right arm to see that database. Even just a list of the fields would make my little heart go pitter-pat.

Uh, the field names would be good but they don't really tell you squat, you need the table names and the dependencies. And who knows what they names used way back when the entire thing was created.

A long, long time ago, in a land far, far, away... Chicago to be exact. The company I worked for was called in to fix a problem with a system for a client. We threw our hands up and gave the guy his retainer back. What he had brought from some other "guy" wasn't an standard database but had to be called 'Bob's Database' None of the column name made sense and he had embedded code in the table columns. It was a complete mess.

I stumbled across Literotica sometime between 2000 and 2002. By the summer of 2002, I was reading almost every new story every day. Back then, there were about a dozen new stories a day, so it was possible to keep up with them all. From 2002-2008, I read almost every story. Most of them I read to the end, even when the quality of the writing wasn't particularly good.

I voted twice.

I think there was a lot more vote manipulation going on back then; most of the stories I really liked were in the 4.2-4.4 range. Now when I go back and find some of those stories, their scores are much higher, typically 4.6-4.7.

Since I started writing and posting my stories, I have had a dozen readers contact me via e-mail, and most of them admit to a similar pattern. They've read stories on the site for years, almost never vote, never or almost never comment. Another handful of readers mentioned that they started reading more recently, and "don't bother to read stories that fall below a 'Hot' rating."

I was aware that there were "Boards" and "Chat rooms" on the site, but I never ventured there. It was only after I posted a couple of stories and screwed up a submission that I came here desperately seeking assistance. KeithD was online and immediately helped me fix my problem. I've stuck around since and learned a ton from reading posts here.

Since I started writing and posting stories, I have read a lot less of other people's stories. I usually vote when I do, and I don't feel bad about giving a 5* rating to a flawed story. Now that I have done it, I know how much time and effort is required just to post a story to this site. I also want to encourage new authors who can tell a good story.

Not sure if this helps you at all, Simon, but there are probably tens of thousands of readers out there who don't have an account, don't vote, and don't comment. They'll account for the bulk of the "views" and you'll never hear from them.
