"Saints an spirits curse the boy," the old woman muttered, rummaging around the crowded shelves in the dimly lit shop. "Once I put my hand on that, I'm gonna knock him into next week."
Lucy bit back a giggle. The old woman with her dreadlocks and her thick accent seemed like a character in a movie, but lots of things about Louisiana seemed surreal to her. The intense heat, the public drunkenness, the strippers hanging out in plain view, to lure men into the clubs that crowded Bourbon Street. She had started at Tulane a few weeks ago, but with classes and life on campus, it had taken her until now to find her way down to the Quarter. She had come with a group of her new friends, mostly girls on her hall, and the boys that they had been dating.
She had been seeing Jeff since almost the first day of school, and things were good with them. So far, they had kept it light, making out a little and spending time together, and she was happy. She knew he was getting a little impatient for things to get sexy, but he wasn't pushing her.
She wanted to get a little sexy with him, but she wanted to be sure she could trust him before that happened. She had been thinking she might go a little farther tonight, when they had a few drinks in them, but then he had gotten a text when they were on the street car, heading into the city, and had gotten off without saying anything other than "I have to go back to campus."
So she was feeling a little left out as the group wandered through the streets, and had drifted to the back of the shop when they had come here. The front was well lit and full of t shirts and souveniers, and the others were laughing and joking with a stuffed alligator. She found her way into the shadowy back of the store, where the supposed voodoo stuff was. A lot of it seemed like novelty junk, but there were some things she wasn't so sure of. She picked up an object that looked for all the world like a giant, shriveled up penis, with a thatch of dried moss on one end. It felt leathery and was heavier than it looked, and she held it up, calling to her friends, giggling.
Before they could come back to see it, the old woman snatched it out of her hand, snapping at her in what might have been french, but was definitely incomprehensible. She all but chased Lucy out of the store, into the hot, humid night, and the others followed her, laughing.
"What was that about?" one of the guys asked her.
"No idea," she said. "That place is creepy, anyway."
"Who wants a drink?" One of the others said, pointing to a daquiri shop that was essentially a window facing onto the street, selling what looked like slushies but were dangerously potent cocktails. A thin drizzle started to fall, and Lucy sighed. She wished Jeff was with them, but since he wasn't, she might as well get bombed.
