Was nice watching Bill Bennett destroy Greg Abbott on Fox News Sunday

I strongly suspect that changing the content of Common Core would not silence the critics, who apparently object to any national standards in education.

Common Core:

Common Core, or Common Core State Standards Initiative is a US national set of goals and expectations regarding the K-12[1] curriculum. States would decide how to meet those goals.[2]

It has turned into a fear mongering tool for the right to attack the left, even though the left has very little to do with it. Of course, most of the things the right likes to blame the left for have little involvement with the actual left. Most opposition towards it comes from think tanks and home schooling parents.

Who is behind it?

Short answer, an independent initiative and not the US Department of Education. The group is called Common Core State Standards Initiative which was developed by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO).[3]

Opposition

Heritage Foundation Video hints that Obama is separating parents and children from their education.

Heartland Institute Their arguments

HSLDA has dedicated a movie to the evils of Common Core called "Building the Machine".

Glenn Beck, in his book Conform: Exposing the Truth About Common Core and Public Education. As if the title doesn't have enough fallacy with the reductio ad absurdum of Common Core as "conformity", the book has a, erhm, pretty rotten core of not even wrong claims about Common Core such as: "Since most parents don't understand the Common Core techniques, students are becoming more dependent on their schools and teachers for their education, and less on help from their parents. This is like a dream come true for progressives who hope to continue to minimize the role of parents in the lives of their children."[4]

Subtraction

Perhaps the one element of the proposed Common Core curriculum that has received the most negative attention is the manner in which it teaches certain arithmetic problems. Rather than just teaching the digit-by-digit subtraction algorithm, the Common Core also includes material on understanding the subtraction process and learning certain shortcuts.

This notion made the rounds as a "look at how ridiculous these standards are!", in much the same way the "New Math" did back in the 1960s. The example chosen by the standards' opponents is usually one designed to make the "new way" look ridiculous, such as "32 - 20"; other examples, like "3000 - 1", can instead make the "new way" look good.[5]

I've read common Core you fucking dim-wit... Have you.. I suggest you go to the Department of education and READ EVER FUCKING WORD on common core. Not what the 'LW' media has parroted for your puke up for everyone....

If its the utopia of education, then tell me, why is there legislation for states to opt out. It's not for me to prove...you don't have to believe me...read it yourself. Dr. Bennett is wrong....States did NOT write common Core. State like Ohio claim too have written there own "Education Standards"..Until you read it Fuck nut... What Ohio did was Re-word Common Core...then pass it off as State standard.

Common Core IS NOT just reading and Math, phonics, word recognition as Dr. Bennett try to pass off. I have kids at several levels of Commie Core.... 1-3 grade you can say...Hay this is good... when they reach 5th Grad. IT all starts to change. there is a LOT of science propaganda and history re-written!!!.. OH RW news propaganda..to which Progressive just adore... because they believe it.

don't believe me...fine. Leading the way in exposing Commie Core has been Michele Malkin. And too help you out, you fucking moron...I don't watch "RW" news...I watched the debate on YouTube. I do the research myself...and have spent $100's of dollars in printer cartridges, printing out Dept of Ed 'Common Core' Documents... I suggest you listen to teacher that appose Commie core. pushing your head up the ass of big government only make you stink like shit!!

If you're so fucking smart...tell everyone who's behind the big push of Common Core, who financed the authoring of Commie Core... ill help you...it wasn't just Obama... and his Enlightenment and propaganda ministers. Whom are the publisher...come on. give the Shee'people the truth

P.S.
Just so you know....Fuck Face. My wife is a teacher. Her school has moved against Commie Core...That's a majority of public school teachers...

Oh yeah we believe Michelle Malkin.

She's even too extreme for Fox News.

lol

If your wife is a teacher she should be investigated then fired.

^^^ A big dummy talking about education is funny.

Common Core forces kids to think about their answers.

Tards like klippert opine that rote memorization is just fine....and quite frankly, it is...but only to a point.

When you reach the higher levels of math (say, algebra and higher) all the rote memorization in the world won't help you and that, my friends, is why the wheels fall off the bus insofar as public education is concerned.

You can't teach "rote, rote, rote...now....THINK!" The brain doesn't work that way.

For the record, I don't think Common Core is perfect, but it's a good first step in teaching kids to think.

I feel like I should remind folks that thinking, of course, is anathema to Conservatism.

Michelle Malkin? Why didn't you say so!? But you don't watch RW "news".....

Malkin is an even bigger partisan moron than you seem to be. Perhaps you should have asked your teacher wife to sound out the larger words for you, possibly proof read your spewnami before you hit submit.

As to your "Obama and his pack of commies did it" bullshit.

The Common Core is a state‐led effort that is not part of No Child Left Behind or any other federal initiative. The federal government played no role in the development of the Common Core. State adoption of the standards is in no way mandatory. States began the work to create clear, consistent standards before the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which provided funding for the Race to the Top grant program. It also began before the Elementary and Secondary Education Act blueprint was released, because this work is being driven by the needs of the states, not the federal government.

The Common Core is not a curriculum. It is a clear set of shared goals and expectations for what knowledge and skills will help our students succeed. Local teachers, principals, superintendents, and others will decide how the standards are to be met. Teachers will continue to devise lesson plans and tailor instruction to the individual needs of the students in their classrooms.

Who developed Common Core’s standards? Three private organizations in Washington DC: the National Governors Association (NGA), the Council for Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), and Achieve, Inc.—all funded for this purpose by a fourth private organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. \

Any other misconceptions you want to have addressed?

That's a lie, my IQ is over 130. Way above your level, shorty.

*laugh*
Now you're claiming to be Mensa level intelligence? The top 2% of the population?
Which test exactly are you claiming gave you a score over 130?

Anyone who's read a single post of yours knows that to be a fabrication.

M.A.R.I.N.E = Muscles Are Required, Intelligence Not Essential.

You know, they're recently come out with a strong-AI computer with an adjustable IQ! Set it for 140, it talks about physics and cosmology; 130, philosophy; 120, history; 110, politics; 100, football; 90, NASCAR; at 80 it sings "From the Halls of Montezuma . . ."

gotta love the obama kind ... as you asshats don't put your head in the sand

you put your head up your own ass

Still waiting for Vette to say which IQ test gave him a score north of 130. I imagine I'll be waiting for a very long time.

C'mon vette, was it the Stanford-Binet test, the Weschler Adult intelligence scale, or some random "Check your IQ" web site?

Five bucks says its the latter.

Or one of those triangular-pegboard games, with golf tees, that you can play at your table at a truck stop?

Well, I suppose VetteBigot is just going to pretend that he wasn't called on his "over 130 IQ" and pull a Vette and act as if the thread no longer exists.
