I deer hunt in Canada. I borrow their .30-'06. They have a farm. The rifle is for protection from coyote.I tend to think of the AR platform and the .223/5.56 cartridge as battle carbine stuff. They will reach out, but they don't do battle rifle stuff, like shoot through cover. Think trees or cars, things like that. I do like the M14/M1A platform, and I own a couple of AR10s, all in the .308 round. I prefer that because it has been used by the military which pretty much assures us that it'll be available in quantity when other rounds won't.
I also like the .30-'06 for the same reasons.
