I constantly tell people to put down their phone because the real world is out here and not in there. Almost all of them absently nod and agree and keep on fingering their electronic device.
I have a rule that there are no phones/tablets/etc allowed at the table. Rule #2 in the House is that we WILL sit down together at the table at meals. You don't have to talk but, absent a life threatening illness/injury, you WILL be there. Don't even think about trying to get out of it because if you're not there when the food hits the plank, your shit won't be in your room when you finally do get home.
Dinner time can be as flexible as needed to accommodate life's left turns but dinner will be together. I have been firm enough on this that no one has tested it yet.
I grew up with that kind of structure. I haven't had a house dweller here Back East since longtime. The cats eat on their schedule and will join me for meals on the offhand chance that I'll share. Out West, we do eat together, but the landlady works odd house and isn't home often. Also, sometimes, I go to grab a meal out with The Boys. Daisy the Labrador likes that because Fahthuh brings his big girl some leftovers for which she is very grateful.
