In 1985 I had an argument with my AP English teacher when I corrected her when she said “Somebody left their textbook here yesterday” and I said “His”. She argued she was right because it could have been a female student. I argued she was wrong because it couldn’t belong to more than one student.

‘His’ was grammatically correct. And at the time, nobody was using they or them as singular pronouns, intentionally.

If she didn’t know the gender of the book owner, she could have said “A textbook was left here yesterday”.

My point, however, is that people akin to this person aren’t upset at inclusive language because it violates grammar rules, because they obviously don’t know the grammar rules. They just know they don’t like inclusive language.

Your AP English teacher didn't understand grammar if you won that argument. Singular "their" as a predictive possessive has been standard English for centuries.
