What happened to the milestones thread?

People one bomb because it’s effective.

If the sweep was an automatic background process that got rid of them every hour or so, it wouldn’t be so much of an issue.

Then I guess that might slow down other aspects of the site.

It also has the downside of giving a tenacious attacker more chances to find angles of attack that work.

There is a downside to most things. But letting the malicious depress views when a story is new is not a great status quo to preserve.

Put all votes in a queue. Only apply them once a week/day/hour/whatever, after sweeping them. Also, if a vote is swept, still keep it on record, still show that user their vote if they look at their rating for the story. No one will be able to tell if their vote was swept or not, nor will they be able to vote again after it is swept. All votes will take effect on the story after a delay and come in in a batch with others, so no one will be able to track the effect their vote had.

There are merits to that, I agree. But, given our stories often have just one day in the sun, how do readers separate wheat from chaff?

We'd have to go with hourly, or every 6 hours or something, then, to make sure stories receive ratings during their new list time.

It’s not an easy problem is it?

If people want to fuck something up, they will find a way.
