What happens when you follow someone in the forums?

You are notified when someone starts to follow you but not when they unfollow you.

Not sure why you feel the need to approve those that do follow you.

Are you going to screen and vet any and all who chose to follow you?

Whatever

I am with you on this one. I would like to see an update that we need to approve for someone to follow us. And we should be able to remove them from following us.
Why? Whenever I get notification that someone is following me on the forum, I have no clue who they are, have never heard of them. Why should I "approve" a completely anonymous stranger who wants to read what I have to say? That makes no sense to me.

If someone starts to harass me on the forums, I can Ignore them or Report them to the site, which is enough. I use the Ignore feature, but have never reported anyone, never needed to.

What are these people doing that you don't want them around?

I have a lot of people follow me that I don’t know. I assume it’s because I’m a mod. It could be because I am a woman.

There are people here who have treated me horribly. I don’t want their names on my profile when I look at it. I have been fortunate to not have been harassed here, but many people have. Folks get banned for harassment, create a new account, and then immediately “follow” their target. Yes, that person should 100% have the ability to block someone from following them. Blocking entirely would be a big improvement. People who don’t understand this concern me. FFS, you either cannot empathize with others or you’re the type that does the shit that leaves people wishing they could block others here.

Perhaps because I am someone who has spent a lot of time handling the reports and documenting harassment here to report back to the powers that be, I have a different understanding of this.

I assure you I am neither.
But whatev

I get that.

How does the person being targetted know who it is, if it's a new account? Sure, their behaviour afterwards would reveal who they are, but when you first see a follow from JoeBlogs76, you don't know who that person is.

That last comment is jumping to two very big conclusions, both unjustified.

I'm genuinely trying to understand how approving a follower would solve anything. You don't know anything about someone when they start following you, so what's the basis for not approving them?

I can see why you might want to block someone for shitty behaviour, but doesn't Ignore do the same thing? You can't see anything they post, and you can't see anything where someone else posts what they've written. Isn't that the same as a block? It is in the forums I frequent.

I have no clue who anyone is, forum side, who follows me - I've never interacted with them before, never interacted with them after. I obviously don't go to the forums where this is an issue, thank goodness.

I really don't understand this. Anyone can read your posts, so if they're making it more efficient for themselves, what's the difference? In fact it takes a bit of work for you to even know they're doing it. ??????
The harassment, the following in chat. If I haven’t interacted with you ever, why should you be able to follow me? There is no block feature but they let people follow you without ever being able to say yes or no. What is the difference is so narrow minded

There should be a block option. I’ve posted in good faith and received totally inappropriate responses

Get over it.
It is fine the way it is and face it your bitching and moaning and hoping ain't gonna change a thing.
Move on.

There's the Ignore feature, which has the same function. You don't see their comments any more. There's also the Report function, if you're being harassed.

Presumably that isn't always true.

Additionally, removing a "follow" isn't like that. If someone following you becomes a problem, I grant that this is a different situation than approving someone requesting to follow you, but again, this isn't an information vacuum.

Lastly, some people might just like not being followed by anyone, and would just not approve anyone's follows at all.

In chat, the ignore feature disappears after you log out . The reporting function rarely brings out an outcome. Beyond that, you should be able to decide if someone follows you or not.

I don’t understand your question.

If you’re having a PM conversation, that is private. Nothing posted to the forum is private.

Why would someone who is new that has never interacted with me want to follow me? I find it creepy.

It's not such a bad idea to make these type of things consensual.

@AlexaF
The only way I've found to stop people from seeing my posts is to set my privacy settings so that ONLY people I follow can see my posts. They can still search my name, but I won't show up in their newsfeed.

My frame of reference is the Authors' Hangout, where we're all on about writing. So in that forum, it makes 100% sense that people would follow me, if they're interested in what I have to say. I have no clue who any of them are - and nearly all of my Forum followers aren't active in the forums themselves, they're lurking in the shadows.

In the chat or playground forums, there's obviously a different dynamic going on.

I don’t see anything that would limit who can see one’s posts. I know we can limit who can see our profiles and start PMs with us. Do you see something different?

I’d love to test out new privacy settings with that hornymwtxn guy. He’s an angry elf, lol.
