*The year was 1665, during the London outbreak of the plague*

The sun lowered early in these days, as if all the world was in darkness. Lord Masterson who was a wealthy landlord of three major pubs, was sitting on the balcony of his plantation home overlooking his lands. This evening was the first night they started to arrive on his lands. Mobs in small groups that once arrived seemed to join in numbers to find the monster that each side was looking for. A vampire….Lord Masterson to be exact. He knew this would come one day, he just didn’t think it would be this soon. Personally he blamed the plague for his outing.

Lighting his pipe he stoked the flame a bit and watched as twenty men started for his home. Surly this group wouldn’t hold much of a fight but Masterson knew the next group would. Turning to the doorway he stepped inside and over the bodies of those he had feasted on tonight. Normally he would of deposed of them but tonight he ran short on time.

Making his way down the stairs he made sure to blow out the light of the candles and lamps so that he would be at home in total darkness around his enemies. He stopped midway through the stairs and waited…Something was wrong. Something….different. Jacob! A fellow vampire was with the group or he was already here.

A thud on the back of the head brought Masterson down the remaining stairs and into the total darkness he so wanted.

* Present day…..Same house*

What Once Was...

Spring of 2010

"I'm going into the garden now." I shouted out to whom ever would hear me. We had bought the plantation last winter, but waited till the spring to make the many renovations needed. "Sunset Hill House" had been on the market for over 50 years. There was a legend that kept the local people away and from buying it. According to legend it was originally built and owned by a 17th century vampire. Lord Masterson. Or so we were told. We didn't pay any attention to what country people said, though. As far as we were concerned it was a great property to move away from the city to. London was great, but it had gotten too busy for us. My husband Michael and our two son's, Alex and James had all agreed to move out of the city unanimously. Alex, 20 was already off to college, Oxford. James, 16 was a junior in the local high school.

I reached the garden and began to clear away the overgrown bushes and dead leaves. It was a large space, but I didn't mind the hard work. Planting a garden of flowers, fruits, and vegetables was a dream of mine I had for years. Shoveling away the dead leaves I dug down deep and heard the thud of the metal head hit something solid and hard. "Michael!" I called out to my husband for help. "What is it?" He asked as he walked to where I was. "I don't know, I hit something with the shovel." I explained. "Here, give me the shovel." he reached for the shovel and started to dig. "There's something down there." he exclaimed as he kept digging. Clearing away the dirt it was then that we both saw it. A coffin. "You've got to be joking." I said. "Here honey, take this shovel." Michael handed the shovel to me and jumped down on top of the lid. Lifting it away, we could see the remains of a body buried long ago. "What now?" I asked, concerned and a little scared. Michael replaced the coffin lid and as he did he cut his hand on the jagged edge. "Ugh! I just cut myself." He exclaimed. I watched as the blood dropped little droplets into the coffin and along the side. "Here take this hankercheif." I handed him one from my pocket. He took it and wrapping it around his hand he climbed back up. "Nothing. It is long gone. Just plant around it." He suggested. "Ewe! I can't plant around that!" I was disgusted. "It's fine. I'll cover it with cement as soon as I can get someone out here, probably within the week. For now just stay out of the garden until it is covered." He rubbed my shoulders and gave me a kiss on the cheek. "Okay. I guess I can go do some work up in the attic for now. There's a lot of old boxes I would love to get into and see what we have inherited." I walked back toward the house and climbed the stairs to the attic.

ENDLESS…..Endless days and nights. Time had no meaning anymore nor did I believe I was still on this Earth. All I could do was waste away into the insanity of countless moments. I lost count of how long I have been trapped, buried alive by that fatherless bastard Jacob. I recounted every step….every feeling from that night when my mind went blank. He must of hidden his stench with the corpes of the dead meals at my feet that night. But how did he get so close. How!!! A bang and a shudder of movement told me something had changed. Could this be that finally someone or something had found me at last. Or was it Jacob that rat eater come back to finish me off. How cruel irony can be. What did I ever do to him, besides taking his woman and unborn child when he was human? Still fate would smile on me this day.

The coffin lid came up and I played dead as the inner voices said I should. We will be ready when he comes.

A human…a man and woman! What fools. Daylight was the only thing keeping them from feeding us as we waited for their conversation to end. As they lowered the lid I caught a faint smell of the woman…her odor filling my nostrils, and sending our thoughts into the frenzy of thirst.

“We must wait.”
I repeated in my head. Over and over again I spoke those words until nightfall came.

What Once Was...

I arrived in the attic and was assaulted by a cloud of dust as I opened the door. The room was massive. Stretching out over the entire width and length of the house, it must have been at least 2000 square feet. Boxes were arranged in sections, as if someone had tried to create corners and rooms up there. I opened up the first box and found clothing from long ago. I wasn't sure how old they were. i'd need to do some research to be sure what period they came from. I walked around after that, assessing the layout. Scattered about where remainders of long ago. Against the back wall were framed pictures stacked against each other. I flipped each one looking at them as they appeared. The third one in was a portrait of a man. He had long black hair and piercing grey eyes. He was dressed in regal clothing. He was beautiful. His eyes seemed to draw me in, and I stared at him for a long time. The sound of footsteps coming up the stairs pulled me out of my trance. "Mom...we are getting hungry. Dad wants to order pizza, what do you want?" James had come to seek me out. "Ok, sweetheart, that sounds good. Just tell dad to order the usual. Or whatever the local pizza place has thats close to it. I'll be down in a moment." I answered. "Ok mom." James went tramping back down the stairs. I replace the first two portraits back against the one of the man and headed back downstairs. I stopped at the top and looked back to where the portraits were. It was an odd feeling. It felt as if I was being called back to it. That's crazy! I mused at myself. Portraits can't communicate!

The years I sent in this coffin was no match for the few remaining hours of daylight. WHEN… when would I be able to smell the freshness of air, that wonderful taste of human blood. Moments to go now and we were counting each second down.

A sudden burst of the lid flying high into the air and freeing me of my grave, a moment of strength flooded us as we stood from the shit coffin Jacob hid us in. We turned and looked taking in the changes of the world around us as new sights came about. Where was this place…. When was this place.

“Feed!” Came the voice in the back of my head. Shaking the thoughts from my mind I spoke back and said. “Not yet. I must find out what changes have been made in the years I was hidden from this world.” Stepping onto the ground and outta my hole, the clothes I was wearing when buried gave way to the elements. To much time passed for them to hold their strength.

One thing became very clear in that moment. I was just outside my old home. That alone gave me such a sense of power that I knew I would have the upper hand on whatever came my way. I started for the home when a sudden loud noise caused me to fly onto the roof. Finding only shadows up here I watched as a metal demon came along the road. A man steeped out of this contraption and headed for the house. His hand raised and knocked as I moved silently to get a better view of who would open the door.

What Once Was...

Coming down the stairs to the main entrance, I rounded the corner towards the kitchen when the door bell rang. "I'll get it." I called out and went to the door. I opened it to find the pizza delivery guy standing outside. "Hi." I said, reaching for the pizza. "Hello ma'am. That'll be $26.50." he said as he handed me the pizza. "Ok, I'll be right back. Hold on." I motioned for him to come into the entry way as I headed for my purse. I took out $30.00 and went to give it to him. "Here you are. What is your name?" I asked, handing him the money. He took it and answered "Henry. ma'am. Do you want your change back?" He asked. "No, the rest is for you. And please don't call me ma'am. My name is Karen." I urged him. He smiled and apologized. "Sorry, Karen. Are you new to this area?" He asked as he looked around seeing the boxes laying about. "Yes, my family and I bought this plantation a few months ago and are now moving here permanentally." I mentioned. He leaned in a little too close to me and whispered. "You DO know the legend of this plantation, don't you?" he asked a little weary. I laughed at his remark. "Yes, dear, so we've been told. You know you are about the same age as my youngest son James. What grade are you in?" I asked him. "I'm in the 11th grade, ma'..I mean Karen." he answered and headed back to his car. I waved goodbye as he started up the engine, heavy rock blaring out the windows, as he drove off. I watched as his car drove down the driveway, the sound of the music dimming in the distance. I heard a rustle behind me, and I turned to look at the roof. Nothing was there. It must have been an animal of some sort. I chidded myself for being too jumpy. I'll have to get used to little things like that out here in the country, I mused to myself. Walking inside, I closed the door behind me and headed back into the kitchen where Mike and James were waiting. "Pizza's here." I announced as I entered the room. Setting the pie down on the counter, I went to get some plates and napkins. "Who wants soda?" I asked.

The metal demon speed off down the road after bring the meal to the soon to be victims in my home. The intruders of my land. Standing from my spot I walked over to the attic window and forced it open. Hoping that the loudness would not be heard on the other floors. Once I stepped inside my old home I grinned to myself as everything seemed to be untouched. Maybe just maybe these humans have left the rest of the house untouched out of respect for me…. Stepping over to one of the old cabinets I removed a white dress shirt, and a pair of black slacks, socks, and dress coat. Granted they would need a good dusting but it was nice to have my old things back. Sliding my feet into the dress shoes I noticed a scent I picked up not to long ago. The woman had been in here….

Slowly I walked towards the door and cracked it open, from this spot I had a great view of the stair case and the lower floors. Noises can up to me as I heard shouting, more metal demons….and God knows what else. (Tv playing) Closing the door I placed my back against it and whispered to myself. “I need to learn these times.”

What Once Was...

After pizza, we went into the living room to An hour later we all turned in. Saying good night, I kissed James on the forehead. "Don't forget to say your prayers tonight, honey." I added. "Ok mom, I will. Love you." He went to his room across from our's and shut the door.

Mike and I closed the door to our room. Undressing in the bathroom and washing off my face, something seemed different to me, but what I didn't know. Mike had brought up our bed and placed it near the front window. There was another sitting/dressing room, we hadn't decided yet what to make it, attached to the bedroom as well. In it there was an old dresser and a large wooden carved canopy bed covered in dust. Mike closed the door to that room and climbed into bed.

Turning off the light in the bathroom I joined him in bed. "Hmmm. this feels so good to just lay here." Mike said softly. I nodded in agreement. "I'm tired too." I added. Mike rolled over and kissed me gently, sweetly. "Are you happy my love?" He asked me. "Yes, my love. I am." I smiled at him. "Want to fool around a little?" He asked. "Kinda..but I'm tired." I replied. Mike pulled his pj bottoms off and rolled over to me. "That's ok, I'll drive tonight." He said with a wink. I laughed and pulled my night dress off over my head. Rolling on top of me he entered me gently. I moaned as his hard cock slid deeply into me. My legs wrapping around his waist, I put my hands on his cheeks and pushed him into me deper still. He moaned out loud, drew out to the tip, and rammed it home. Fucking me hard and fast I began to thrust my hips up to meet his thrusts, our bodies hitting hard together. Coming together, we both collapsed in a sweaty heap. "Oh Yeah! That's what I needed, baby." he cooed and kissed me deeply again. Falling asleep naked in each others arms, we were complete.
