What She Needs (Closed)

Corey felt utterly exhausted after that. Between the workday, the workout, and the sex she felt she could have curled up and went to sleep then and there. She really needed a shower though.

She leaned back in Luke's arms and sighed with a content smile. "I think I do know... It's as much as I love you, Bear" she said and giggled. "That was the most erotic thing I have ever done..."

After a while they stood and went to shower together- which ended in a little fondling and laughing but no actual sex. They were both completely wiped. They got out and Corrine looked at Luke.

"Are we gonna stay together tonight or go to our separate houses?" She asks softly.

"I think I need a good night's sleep. If you promise me you won't take advantage of me, I'd love to sleep at your apartment."

They drove to her place in comfortable silence, both content and happy. After feeding and walking Rookie they went to sleep in each other's arms completely bushed. The next morning they got up and went to work, keeping up their charade and flirting whenever no-one was watching.

It was Hamilton's turn to have Zoe that weekend and although he more than anything wanted to meet Corey he had an obligation to his daughter. Not that he minded of course. She was the most precious person in his life, alongside Corey. The weekend went by much too fast and monday approached. After he'd delivered Zoe in kindergarten (with much crying on Zoe's part) he went to the precinct HQ. It was a new experience for him, looking forward to a monday morning at work.

Corey was there, being her smiling sexy self. Hamilton wanted to go out on an outreach patrol with her again, and as he'd promised Rollins he'd step up the outreach activities he had an excuse. His now familiar bark of "Roberts, my office!" sounded as he with joyful anticipation awaited her knock on the door.

The weekend was torturous as it was just Corrine and Rookie. She had even picked up an extra shift to combat the loneliness she get without Luke around. By the time monday rolled around she was more than ready for work and to see him- even in a professional capacity.

Things were getting a little better around the precinct. More and more officers were starting to respect her. Grimes would be back the very next day, which Corey was not looking forward to. She wanted to talk with Luke about it.

When he walked in she did her best to avoid beaming at him like she wanted to. He growled at her to meet him in his office.

"Geez Roberts..." Said Martinez, a young kid with a desk next to hers. "What'd you do this time? Or is this about that outreach program?"

Corrine shrugged and stood, walking to the office door where she knocked and entered once he beckoned. She shut the door behind her and leaned against it, her arms crossed beneath her chest, feet crossed at the ankle.

And a shit eating grin on her face.

"Morning Captain" she said in a low, sexy voice. "How was Zoe?"

He couldn't contain his pleasure in seeing her again. A warm smile spread across his face as he watched her, sexy as ever, leaning casually.

"Zoe was great. We went to the zoo, watched too much Spongebob and pigged out on icecream. It was great. I'm sure she'll love you when you meet her. Of course, leaving her at the kindergarten today wasn't exactly fun. She always cries. How was your weekend?"

A sad furrow appeared as he thought about Zoe crying as he left her. He really hated that.

She saw the frown on his face and wanted to kiss it off. Instead she walked closer and touched his forearm briefly.

"She cried because she has fun with you and doesn't wanna leave you. I'm sure once you leave she's fine... My nephew used to do that. But the teacher always said he was fine once my brother left". She smiled at him again. "I bet you're a hell of a dad... You gonna let her date before she's thirty?"

She could imagine his little girl locked up in a bedroom not allowed to socialize with boys and laughed to herself. He'd probably be the dad cleaning his gun when some unsuspecting boy came to take his daughter on a date.

"So did you really need me in here or did to just wanna say hi?" She asked softly so noone else passing by would hear.

She either didn't want to talk about her weekend, or it had been so dull that she didn't want to talk about it.

He chuckled, something he'd done more often lately. Probably because of her.

"I'm afraid I can't stop my little girl from growing up some day. I'll teach her all I know and hope for the best. But woe betide the little punk that hurts her."

"Anyway, yes, we are to step up the outreach patrols again. We're on for patrol, officer Roberts. Suit up and meet me outside. And even though it's bulky and not at all flattering, wear your kevlar this time. Don't think I didn't notice last time!"

Real concern in his voice.

Another outreach patrol with Luke. Her pulse raced an she grinned broadly. W made The comment about Kevlar and she nodded more solemnly. "I hate those ... But ok I will. I know I need it". She sighed. "Ok ill meet you out there in fifteen."

She winked and left the office to go get ready before meeting up with him again exactly fifteen minutes later. She smiled when she saw him.

"Ready, Captain... Lets rock" she told him, excited for their outreach. She hoped to make progress on recruiting kids for the boxing program that day... God willing.

"Where to first?"

"I think the school first this time. Sometimes they want us to come down and take reports of trouble with the kids. Besides, we need to talk to them about the new outreach initiative, though it's far from finalized yet. And who knows, maybe we get to talk to the kids in the assembly?"

As they started walking, he addressed her as soon as they were out of sight and earshot of their officers. "So how WAS your weekend, Fox? You never answered me?" He smiled at her, his interest genuine.

Corrine smiled over at Luke as they walked. "It was boring. I even picked up an extra shift cause I was bored. I missed you, bear" she said with a sly smile- a smile like a fox even.

"And no you can't stop her from growing up. You can help her make the right decisions though" she said with a smile. "At least she had her mom around also. I'm positive you're a great father but it'll be good for them to have mom too".

They closed in on the school and she started to glance around. Kids were still arriving to the building and a few came charging up.

"Captain Hamilton!!! Hey!!! Hey Officer .... Uh... "

"ROBERTS!" One who Corrine had met before yelled and Corey smiled down at them, her face softening completely at the sight of them... So innocent and happy.

The kids greeted them, rambunctious as ever. Hamilton went into his friendly bear (Damnit! Now the nickname stuck in his brain as well!) mode and played around with the kids. He even made the kids gang up on Corey to tickle her, giving her a wicked grin when they propelled into her.

As the bell rang for class he led Corey upstairs to visit the principal. A stern but kind woman in her fifties, she greeted them both. Captain Hamilton and principal Washington had met before, of course. Washington turned her pearly smile on Corey: "You must be Hamilton's 'girlfriend'?"

Corey froze at the principals words. She glanced quickly at Luke then back to the principal. "Uh, ma'am?" She asked confusedly. "I'm officer Roberts ... I'm part f the outreach boxin program we are trying to start with the kids around here".

She put on professional face when talking to the principal- a totally different persona then when she was with the children.

Like luke, she could switch on and off the gruffness in her personality as well as the friendliness and playfulness. It was like two personas merged into one but it ended up working out to be a great combination.

Principal Washington laughed, a warm and kind laugh. "I happened to pass you two the last time you were here and heard what one of my kids whispered to Hamilton here, nothing more." But there was a hint of understanding in her face.

Hamilton and Roberts took it in turns to talk about the new proposed program, defending the kids that had ditched class to come talk to him. Principal Washington wanted them to talk to the assembled school the next day, if at all possible. Hamilton confirmed that yes, that was indeed possible.

As they left the principal's office, Hamilton had to smile. "Your face when she made that crack about you being my girlfriend was priceless."

Corrine shot a glare at Luke. "I thought she knew" she said, smiling finally. "My heart literally dropped... But on anther note, the assembly should be great tomorrow. It'll really get the word out to the kids in this neighborhood. I'm really excited about this project, Luke. It's gonna do wonders... It'll really help with the violence and gangs. I know it."

She was practically bubbling she was so excited, bounding along beside him, an extra skip in her step.

"So where to next... The.. Uh... Not so good area? I'm sure there are kids who skipped or have dropped out of school out there..."

"You read my mind, Corey. We take a different route this time, but yeah, same shitty neighbourhood. My warnings last time weren't for show. On your toes, Fox!"

They entered gangbanger central on high alert. Their eyes scanned every building, every corner, every rooftop ready for anything. A couple of blocks in, he saw a familiar face. It was Jermaine, one of the kids that had come to talk to him last week. Jermaine shot them a furtive glance and looked down at his feet. But he didn't run as they approached him.

"Jermaine man, why aren't you in school?"

Corrine watched quietly as Luke and Jermaine exchanged talk. They obviously had a rapport going and she didn't want to disturb it. He asked hey the kid wasnt in school.

Corrine found herself getting distracted by Luke. His eyes were friendly, his mouth smiling. No bear showing here. He was in kid mode and this kid trusted him. The love in her heart expanded ten fold. This wasnt a normal infatuation kind of love. She was falling for him. Hook, line, and sinker.

He glanced her way and he realized he had spoken to her. "I'm sorry sir? I missed what you said".

Her head WASN'T in the game and she needed to focus. She grimaced slightly.

Luke was about to respond, to tell her to keep watch when he heard a simultaneous boom and crack as a bullet whistled past uncomfortably close to his head. Oh no! Time seemed to stand still as he grabbed Jermaine and ran for cover, keeping his body between Jermaine and the shooter. As in a dream he heard bullets crack past, some very close, others whistling by like angry bumblebees.

"COREY! GET TO COVER, CALL FOR BACKUP!! Shooter across the street, I haven't got a fix on his location. JERMAINE, DON'T RUN!"

The kid had panicked. Shit. He started off after him. He had to get him behind cover.

Corey heard the first crack of gunfire and automatically drew her weapon, ducking behind a nearby car. She saw Luke do the same, dragging Jermaine with him. She was already radioing for backup when Luke screamed for her to. Like him, she couldn't get a sight of where the shots were coming from.

She saw the boy bolt and Luke after him and her heart jumped in her chest as they raced into the open. It was then she saw the hoofer in an upstairs window three buildings down, with his sights on Luke.

"LUKE! Four o'clock !!! Upper floor!!!" She screamed just as she heard more shots and saw Luke stumble. Bile rose in her throat but she had to get to the boy who was now frozen in the street. Back up screeched to a halt as she was radioing for an officer down, and the shooters location. the shooter was momentarily distracted.

She took that moment to run into the street. "jermaine get behind that car!" She screamed, relieved to see him do just that.

She quickly started to pull on Luke.

"Come on Luke, work with me. I can't move you alone!" She yelled as she yanked and tugged on him with all her strength. Another officer joined her and they managed to get him behind the car where she collapsed, pullin Jermaine close and realizing tears flowed down her cheeks.

The last thing he remembered was a sensation as of someone slugging him in the side with a sledgehammer.

The first thing he remembered was looking up in her tearfilled face as she was screaming for him to help her move him.

He struggled to sit up, feeling winded. He muttered "got the wind knocked out of me, 's all. Don't worry sweetheart. Is Jermaine okay?" Then the pain hit him. He'd never been hit before, and his mind was detached. The reseptors just opened for business he thought as pain and not being able to breathe properly sent him down again.

Somehow, he still managed to help Corey get him to cover, a part of him registering that shooting now was going on near him. When he got to cover he reached around to check where it hurt the most. He pressed gingerly and winced. He checked his hand. No blood. Despite the pain he started to laugh. No blood! Thank God for kevlar!

He gasped out "I'm okay. Vest caught bullet. Hard to breathe. Ribs."

Corrine wanted to be with Luke, but Jermaine was clinging to her and shaking violently in her arms. She couldn't leave the kid when he needed her like this. He heard Luke's words though and her stomach unclenched. Broken ribs could be easily fixed. A bullet could have done so much worse.

She beamed at Luke from where she was sitting, three feet away, with the young boy in her arms. Bullets continued to fly, but everything seemed ok at that point in time. Suddenly it seemed the shots stopped instantly.

"Shooter is hit. He's down." Their radios chimed.

"We still need a medic" Corey said into her own radio, her voice strong Ben as she trembled.

Her eyes met Luke's and conveyed her emotions. She loved him. She was scared to death for him. For them. But it would all be ok now. Relieved she let we head fall back against the car with a thunk.

As Luke regained his ability to breathe (and again sending a prayer to whoever it was that thought of bulletproof vests!) he regained some semblance of composure and ran damage control in his head.

Jermaine was unhurt, as was Corey. The shooter turned out to be a member of the gang Jermaine's brother ran with. Shit. They'd have to act fast now if he ever were to see some real progress in his precinct. He was sure some of the more conservative politicians would be screaming for blood and demand that Something Be Done. That could end in a bloodbath.

He staggered to his feet, and under the pretext of being her concerned boss, he pulled her aside. "We need to do some damage control, and fast! We need to put you and the outreach program in the news before the bloodthirstier segments of the media and politicians start baying, demanding blood. You up to be a spokesperson, Corey? I'll be there and cover you if you stall. But you're the pretty face that can convince people to listen"

He looked at a crew from the local news station.

Corrine stared at Luke, mouth agape. "You're kidding... I mean I can but LUKE... Uh... Captain! You just got SHOT. You have broken ribs I'm sure. If not for the Kevlar you could be dead!" She said in a hushed but urgent voice.

She was aware of others around and her eyes flashed with temper as she stared at him. He was hurt. He needed to take care of himself.

"I will take care of the hounds. ME. You will go get your ribs checked out. They can puncture a lung. I've done the media thing before I can handle it. I wil promote the program, explain that we were doing outreach today when this happened. Make the program look like a necessity in the face of this shooting. I will be fine". She put emphasis on the "I".

She turned back to check on Jermaine. Walking over to him she knelt down. She gave the kid her card.

"Call me kid. If you need ANYTHING. Please call me". Jermaine nodded.

Taking a deep breath, Corrine went to face the media.

"Yes ma'am!" he muttered at her back.

Only later would he realize that he hadn't been thinking straight after he'd been hit. Corey was right, of course. And he had Zoe to think about.

He was mulling this over as he sat at home, being discharged from the hospital with some painkillers. He had been exceedingly lucky. The bullet had hit the kevlar at an angle, tearing parts of it, which had caused a hefty glancing blow to two of his ribs. The fractures had been clean, but they warned him that the pain would worsen after ten days or so. He could hardly wait. The pain was killing him now.

The painkillers made him nice and woozy. That, added to the shock of being shot had made him lose touch, and it wasn't until he saw Corey's composed face with a voice quavering with emotion on the local news he remembered to call her to tell her he was fine. He was ready for her to be mad. He'd certainly be if he'd had to wait that long for a sign of life.

Corey made her statements to the news who seemed to buy into it. They all yammered for more information but she told them the precinct would be making an official statement later in the week with what they wanted everyone to know.

She didn't take questions, merely walke off the tv. And went home and waited. Impatiently. She was worried about Luke and hadnt heard hide nor hair from him since the scene.

Rookie picked up on her agitation and began pacing back and forth by the door. Finally when she still hasn't heard anything she got up and got in her jeep, rookie by her side and drove to his house.

Just as she turned on his street she answered her phone to him.

"Unlock your door. I'm parking down the road as coming in" she told him shortly, trying to hide her fear behind anger.

He went to unlock the door, and there she was.

She looked upset, as was her right. He could only blame the sedatives he'd been given combined with the shock of being shot.

He raised his arms in mock surrender, wincing as he did so. Damn, the pain took some getting used to

"Go easy on a wounded man?" His lame attempt at a joke petered away as soon as he'd said the words.

She was a vision of fury and worry, Rookie brought up the rear looking decidedly more downcast.

"You took long enough to call" Corrine accused, her voice coming out more worried than angry. "I was worried sick".

She walked in and sat down on his couch, not even registering the fact thy the was the first time she had been there. She looked up at him with fear in her eyes.

"I've never dated a fellow cop" she admitted. "When I saw you go down... I..." She was at a loss for words. "God Luke... All I could think of was my mom..." Tears filled her eyes.

"Luke I was so scared. I've never been that scared in my life... And Jermaine too..." She shook her head and stood walking over to him. "Like Hamilton, I love you and I don't ever want to lose you... Those were the worst minutes of my entire life... Equal to when I lost my mom".
