What would you do?

Ok, so I was in the garage bright and early this morning, looking for my horses' winter blankets...

Sitting on the scroll saw table, was a leather case with 2 speedloaders for a .38 (i think).

I don't own a handgun. None of my friend's would bring their handguns to my house, and if they did, thy wouldn't leave ammo behind.

So? Would you call the Sheriff? Just ignore the weirdness? So far, I've left them sitting where I found them.

Well, if they don't belong to you, and you know no one is stupid enough to bring it there, then I would make a logic guess that someone might have tried to dump it, or hide it there.

Call the cops, and hand it over to them. ;)

what she said. :)

and if someone you know did leave it there, and they ask you about it, just tell them you found it and since you didn't know whose it was, you got rid of it....

i would definitely call someone of authority to get rid of it.. someone could be trying to use your garage as a hideout or whatever which could be really really really bad for you in the long run

First I would ask Lost Cause if they were his or one of his friends, and if not I would put the speedloaders with my other speedloaders and wait for someone to claim them.

Why is everyone so freaked about a little piece of plastic or rubber (and maybe ammo) left laying around? I wouldn't call the cops, there is nothing illegal about speedloaders, not even with ammo in them - and nothing dangerous about it either.

Just because the speedloaders are there doesn't mean that someone brought a firearm on your property; they could have left the speedloaders in their pockets, etc., after a range session, and then when they came to your place needed to get something from their pockets and left the speedloaders there forgetting them afterwards. Lots of innocent explanations, as in someone found them after they fell out of someone else's pocket during riding and left them for you not knowing whose they were, or if they were yours.

Put out the word among your friends that they were found somewhere on your property and someone will probably come pick them up. Mystery solved.

My concern isn't in any inherent danger the ammo might pose. Them being there is SO odd, I can't even describe it.

I'm not a paranoid person STG. But the fact is, we live in the county. No one goes to a range, because it's perfectly legal (and a lot more fun :) ) to shoot guns in our back yards... our garage is detached and more of a woodworking shop/tack room. there is no reason for anyone to be in there.

Again, there'd be no reason to be in the garage. No one rides at my house, we always meet at the boarding stable down the road because most of my friends are townies who keep their horses there. Also, I haven't had any of my guy friends over in a month, and none of my women friends enjoy shooting handguns.

Contact law enforcement

and keep us posted.

It is better to err on the side of caution.

Okay, given the rest of your explanation I too would think it odd - but before calling the cops I think I would ask my friends first - it could just be some circumstantial thing that happened.

I get a little freaked too when people are around my stuff when they shouldn't be; kids cut through my yard all the time and I don't want them messing with my bikes (they already stole a hood ornament off Lost Cause's truck). But I think it does little good to call the cops as there is not much they can really do. They could dust the case and speedloaders for prints, but then what? Neither item is illegal, and I doubt they were used in a crime and then left someplace where someone else could find them.

Of course, someone could have planted them there for them to be found, trying to implicate you in something - in that case, I would remove any contraband from your property (such as a certain wild weed that some people smoke), then call the cops and ask them to check it out. Get an appointment time and don't touch the cases if you haven't already.

If you have already touched them, then put them in a bag and take them to the cops to preclude them coming out to your place and giving them an excuse to search your it. Under no circumstances give them any kind of permission to search your premises, period! Be unequivical about that permission - say no and keep saying no.

In fact, in your case, I think I would do this; if you have any contraband, including paraphenalia, remove it all for the time being, then pick up the speedloaders with something other than your hands and put them in a bag. Then take them to your local law enforcement station and explain that you found them in your garage where they had not been before.

Yep - I am paranoid about law enforcement, but having been in that realm, I know how some of them think, and I have good reason to be paranoid.

I think you should consider putting an alarm system on your garage. I have a cabin, that is in the "boonies" and I put one in place after I found two pounds of wacky tobacco drying in an outbuilding. I gave the cops a call and then put the alarm system in place. I haven't had a problem since then and my neighbors (four miles away) know to watch out for wandering folks. You could post your property too. I did that at the state cops suggestion. It puts people on notice that you are serious about it.

my response

as someone pretty well versed in Law enforcement etc.
1) Ask hubby if they are his or a friend of his... do not touch with unprotected hands... (no prints no implication)

2) If not hubbies, ask any friends... female as well, just because they havent owned guns before they may now, tis strange times we live in. Gun sales in the Silicon valley are up 64% in last month.

3) If they do not belong to friend or hubby, (i hate suggesting this) but go through hubbies stuff... see if he is lying to you about owning a firearm... dangerous given the other folks in your house

4) If not related to your household or your friends Call local law enforcement about them explain situation honestly again DO NOT TOUCH THEM with your hands uncovered. Also leave them where they are...

5) post updates often more information to follow, Cntrycop out

I agree with DCL. They creep me out too. Why? Because they make it entirely too easy to injure or kill, either by accident or on purpose, another living being.

Lots of things are used to "kill people." Guns alone don't "creep me out." But finding something related to a gun on my property where there is no logical explanation for how it got there, THAT would creep me out. Finding ANYTHING on my property that leads me to believe someone was in my house or garage without my permission would creep me out.

Call the cops and ask if you should bring the things in or if the cops want you to just let them where they are so they can come get them. In my case, if they wanted to come look around my garage, I'd say go right ahead.

dont touch them at all leave them as u found them and then call the police! the sooner the better:D

Contact the cops

If there is an innocent explanation they wont mind giving it to them
