When Darkness Falls

"Well tonight, we will sleep, come tomorrow we send out the word, that a new player is in town. We'll check the sheets, police blotters anything else we can think of to figure out this puzzle." Dahmnall said "And kill alot of vamps till we find who we want."

Amelia

When Dahmnall said police blotters, Amelia began to wonder if she could still actually go to work knowing that the police were working with the vampires or without having done her paper work on acount of kidnapping. But she decided to leave it alone for now and wait until the morning to decide what she was going to do.

Dahmnall walked through the front door and met up with the cousins that he had left behind to guard Elizabeth. After showing Elizabeth that she was alright, Amelia went with them to the living room to explain what happened that evening. She told everything, but the gory bits, from getting out of the hospital and seeing Fry in the alley to dropping off Fry's children.

"We will have to stay here for now and we should get what we need from the apartment in the morning."Amelia said.

"Tell me something of these Hunters and the troubles you have encountered. "He called back to her. "I do not think that Detective Callahan was a part of them before, no?"

Leola talked about an attack on her and her houshold while she was travelling in Europe. "Amelia Callahan's partner was being bothersome and investigating one of my men. I was toying with him for a while, and was going to kill him, but then he recognized Miss Callahan and I realized what I had on my hands, a way to get the hunters where I wanted them, and an amusing gift for you. But no, she has only been recently seen with them. I don't think that she has been involved long."

Dracius only smirked at the reply.

"Leola, Leola, Leola, You have provided me with much more than you know and for that, I thank you. A pity that it cost you so many of your servants however. Still, Ms. Callahan has indeed been an amusing gift for me."

He glanced back at her and then back to the cityscape.

"But dawn is coming fast and you need a new residence for the day. I shall take my leave of you for now, but I invite you back to play tomorrow eve, at this very spot."

"Goodnight Leola."

As the night wore on, Amelia's pocket buzzed momentarilly before she realized she still had Fry's cell phone with her.

Amelia

Amelia was about to ask where she could sleep when the cell phone in her pocket started ringing. She automatically answered "Hello, Detective Callahan." and then remembered that it wasn't her cell phone but Fry's.

There was a fragment of a pause before a deep voice answered.

"Good evening Ms. Callahan. How's your hand?"

"I regret that we did not have ample time to get to know each other better, given the rather hasty departure be both were required to make, but I do not doubt that we'll meet again."

Amelia

Amelia shuddered when she recongnized the voice on the other end.

"I hope that next time we meet I can repay you for the hand. Who are you?"

Ithica said:
"I hope that next time we meet I can repay you for the hand. Who are you?"

There was a slight chuckle at the other end of the phone. "I am just a mere composer my dear. "The voice said. "Someone who makes order out of chaos and on ocasion, I teach lessons to those who are in need of...re-education. Nothing more."

"I was concerned that you might have been injured in your rescue. Weapons are so messy these days. I do trust you are safe and warm now, yes?"

Amelia

"Yes, I'm fine and how are you?" Amelia said sarcastically. "So we have finished the small talk, what do you want?"

Catching the questioning look from her sister, Amelia got up and started walking out of the room towards the front entry.

"I am very well, thank you for asking." The voice replied in a very pleasant tone.

"Perhaps I was truly concerned about you, Detective. I have found you rather interesting this night. I thought it would be nice to check up on you..."

The tone hadn't changed, but it almost seemed as if a chill started eminating from the tiny cell phone.

"... to let you know I haven't forgotten about you."

Amelia

"... to let you know I haven't forgotten about you."

Amelia started shaking and was disappointed when how scared she was came through in her voice when she said, "stay away from me."

There was a 'tisking' sound on the other end of the phone.

"Amelia, Amelia. What is the matter? You are the police detective, you have the gun and you have such special friends all around you. How could I possibly come near you? After all, I'm quite certain you could call out an APB or restraining order on me. Surely you have more faith in your own law enforcement's ability to protect you from a single stranger...."

"Don't you?"

Amelia

The police work for the vampires, Amelia thought, and wondered how much help they would be. She then remembered Dahmnall rescuing her and said,

"You know what; you are right. You high tailed it away when they came to rescue me. You didn't stay and face them. I'm sure I'll be just fine."

Elizabeth walked into the front entry and said,

"What's going on, Amelia? Is everything ok?"

Amelia tried to wave Elizabeth away and turned back to listen to his reply.

There was a pause. Not a particuarilly long pause, but a definate pause never the less.

"Yesss." Came the answer finally, coming out almost like a purr. "You are exactly right Detective Callahan. I ran away and did not face them. See, you are perfectly safe from me. Nothing to worry about my dear. I am but some foolish, twisted old crackpot with a misguided facination."

"After all, There are no such things as vampires....are there Amelia."

Amelia

Amelia started shaking again. "You are a sadistic bastard."Amelia cried out, "You and Leola are quite suited to each other; you are both insane."

"Oh, nonononono my dear Amelia. I am far from insane," the voice chided, still sounding amused . "If you find me a frightening boogyman, it is because you want me to be exactly what I am."
"After all, YOU could have hung this phone at any time, YOU could have handed it off to your heroic rescuer and let him bluster, threaten and beat his chest, but you didn't Ms. Callahan."

"You stayed with me."

"You are in well over your head Amelia...and you still have no idea what you're dealing with. Ask your rescuer what happens to heroes like him...and like you. There are no retiree homes to go to, no happy endings, no light at the end of the tunnel. He is sinking into his own personal Hell and he will drag everyone and everything around him down to his Hell as well, and do you know what's in Hell my dear?"

"Me."

"There's still a chance for you my dear. Daylight is coming soon. Run. Kill him, leap over his body and run as fast and as far as you can and maybe, just maybe, you'll escape."

"Maybe."

"In any case, I have enjoyed our little conversation Ms. Callahan, but as I said, daylight is coming, so I shall let you go. Good night, sleep well my dear...."

"..and pleasant dreams."

Then the line went dead, Amelia was alone again.

Amelia

Amelia shook her head and looked at Dahmnall, trying to figure out how much of what was said was the truth. She had been spending the majority of the last several years tracking down serial killers, how come this one was getting to her so much. Amelia held up the phone and said,

"A sick joke from a sick monster checking up on how I'm doing. It's getting late and we have all had a busy day. Would you be able to show me to my room? I could use some sleep."

"I see" Dahmnall said, looking unconvinced. "Yes I will show you to your room, follow me if you please." Dahmnall walked up the stairs and opened her door. "My room is right there," he said, pointing to the next door. Thats elizabeths" he said pointing to the left of Amelias room. "You will find a .45 handgun under your pillow, safety on, use it if you need to." he said "Sleep well, Ami, if you need me, I'll be right next door."

Amelia

Amelia said goodnight to Elizabeth as she walked into her room, leaving Amelia in the hallway with Dahmnall. She smiled when he told her about the gun under her pillow.

"You sure know how to romance a girl" she laughed, then seriously said, "It will kill vampires right?"

"Aye it will that," dahmnall said, walking into her room and reaching for the gun. He turned off the safety and pulled out the clip to show her the bullets "Look closely, These rounds are basically miniature silver stakes, made from blessed silver." he said "Aim for the head or heart." He said reloading the gun and pulling back on it, then turning on the safety. "It'll kill them all right."

Amelia

Amelia took a look at the bullets and said,

"That's perfect. Thank you very much. So I guess we will go sometime during the day to get some stuff from the apartment. Oh, I think Elizabeth has classes tomorrow. I would feel better if someone went with her to make sure she is safe. I'll see you in the morning then."

"It will be done" dahmnall said. Torn by indecision, he halfmoved to kiss her but checked himself "Good night then, If you need me, you know where I am" he said and turned to leave.

Amelia

Amelia felt awkward seeing how unsure of himself Dahmnall was and walked him to the door. "Thank you, Dahmnall. We should talk in the morning while you are making me breakfast. Goodnight."

She went up on her toes and gave him a quick kiss and closed the door.
