I posted a story, my first last night. When I open story it shows 6 comments. Believe thats what the page icon with text means. Says I have 6, but nothing shows...
Do they take time to populate?
Do I need to adjust a setting?

Some comments are moderated so while they are in the system they may not yet be visible.
Congrats on the story and getting so much feedback immediately.
Wait a few days.

The comment icon in your Control Panel is two speech bubbles:

On the story page it's a speech bubble with a number:

The icon I think you're referring to is "Reading lists":

Either way, if you go to "My home" in your Control Panel you should see whether anybody had commented.

But either way, congratulations on publishing your first story here! It's a weird and wonderful hobby, and this place can be a great support group and sounding board if you need it. So stick around and join some of the conversations and discussions and general mayhem!

No, they're not comments, that's the number of people who have listed your story, most likely bookmarked to read later.

Noting that you've not yet got any comments, the speed with which comments show depends on who writes them. My comments, for example, post immediately because I've passed a threshold, and am now a "trusted" commentator. Other commenters need to reach that threshold (I have no idea what it is, these days).

Comments don't get reviewed for content, as some people seem to think, but they do get scanned for unwanted html, spam and offsite links, which is still, I believe, a batch process that runs on those comments on some sort of a cycle.

You can delete comments yourself, as the author, using whatever criteria you choose.
Do I need to adjust a setting?
Check that you have comments enabled in your story settings. The default is On, when you submit the story on the first place, but it's a button that can be inadvertently toggled off. You can turn comments on or off at any time.

Be aware that comments are rare (unless you post in LW). My metric, over a 140 stories/chapters and a million and a half words, is one Vote per hundred Views, one Comment per thousand Views. Lit is a feedback-lite zone.

Thank you!! What are reading lists?

Thank you for the thorough response

Are comments helpful other than feedback?
Depends on the comments, and what they say.

Readers will comment if the story is really good, or really bad, but if it's in the middle of the bell curve, it can be tumbleweeds.

But if you find a whole bunch of people saying the same thing, it usually means, "Pay attention."

Reading lists are different for different people. Some readers store/bookmark hundreds or even thousands of stories that fit their kink (or somehow attracted their attention). It can be disappointing - you think someone loved your story, but you look them up and they've also bookmarked 2372 others. Other people use them for various purposes, like "will read this when I get time" or whatever. A few people give their reading lists precise names so you can see why yours is on it - but this is rare.

Some people use the 'favorite' button for its proper purpose: they really liked the story, and thought it was one of the best. Others have 3917 favourites, so that dilutes the honour somewhat. Others just use it as a quick bookmark, and it's temporarily on a "read this soon" list, and will later be removed. You are notified of favouriting but not of removal.

That's all right, we all gotta start out somewhere, right? I'd be thrilled if someone said my first story was "Leave it to Beavers shit" God, I think about the first couple years I was writing and I do not ever want to go back and look at those.

Just keep writing and learning, you'll get better at it :) There are a ton of threads with advice and tips and techniques and the like. I'd probably start with https://forum.literotica.com/thread...f-writing-tricks-philosophies-styles.1632683/. It's the most general of the bunch, the rest are fairly specific and get more into the weeds, which is great, but might be overwhelming (would be for me if I was just starting out, anyway). But, if you do wanna give it a peek, there's a good collection here: https://forum.literotica.com/threads/on-writing-threads-collated.1654564/

Comments are very rare, my first and second story did spark some, but then they dried up. Of course, mostly because there are less readers on the series than a individual story. But what pleases me is that I have received many direct messages and emails, many of them are compliments, and some are particularly encouraging.

That's great! I'm glad you're seeing that level of engagement, even if it is private. It's nice to hear back from readers :)
