Where do rejected stories go?

my understanding (which may be incorrect):

if a story's been rejected, it can't be retrieved on lit--there's nothing to look for. if the author just wrote it in the submission form and it was rejected, i don't think there's anything to be done if it wasn't saved elsewhere.

hopefully, this wasn't the case. do you know for certain?
