Where do we GET these lunatics?

Top shmo, izzat it? I'm the opposite of flattered.

He messaged me again. Wants 50k+ words, and he'll give me 20 bucks. Also volunteered a few details of the more visceral and bloody scenes he wants. My inbox feels so dirty now.

This guy's got more issues than Reader's Digest AND the Farmer's Almanac

I'm trying to think of a polite way of saying 'I'd rather have my eyeballs sucked out my ass'.

Apologies in advance if he starts sniffing around any of you after I let him down.

I already wrote one nine month pregnant cat-woman drunkenly fighting the half-sister of guy who knocked her up, who was also having an incestuous relationship with that same guy. It ends with them drunkenly sodomizing each other with their cat tails as a group of people watch, while those people ate sausages & bacon made out of murder victims.

I wanted to stay close to the source material, most of the women raping each other were not pregnant in the Culhwch ac Olwen from the Llyfr Coch Hergest. I guess I will have to add more pregnant women to the next fight/fuck scene.

With all these people with this kink, I would think my Jack the Giant killer story would at least have a 4.5 stars.

There are twenty people into your kink. Two of them vote, and one of them doesn't like the name "Jack." She 1* bombs you.

Sometimes, that's just the way it goes.

One of my stories was turned into a porno. It's about a scientist who shrinks the wife of his boss to barbie size and keeps her as his captive until the husband/boss cedes all the rights of the shrink ray over to the scientist. Now, the porno was completely unauthorized and I only knew it had been appropriated when the porn star's manager sent me an e-mail asking if I would be willing to write a sequel. Naturally, he offered me NO money to write said sequel and they were so cheap, they wouldn't even provide me a copy of the video they were selling for 40 bucks a pop. I obtained it from a gray market source, and sure as shoot, it was my story -- right down to the plotlines and dialogue! -- At least this guy was offering cash -- not much cash, of course,.but he probably wouldn't have robbed you blind over it. When I broached the topic of getting, you know, paid for my intellectual property and for penning a sequel, the agent's letters stopped coming. Some of our readers are real low-lives!

I thought I was weird until I read some of the concepts on the Story Ideas board. One guy imagines students blackmailing their teacher and, among other things, drinking milk shakes out of her genitals. (With a straw?) There's a lot of anti-teacher stuff that seems to reflect a deep-seated resentment towards compulsory education or maybe just with schools in general. It all seems to be from males who disliked their female teachers.

But we all of have our kinks, and of course it's only someone else's that appear strange.

I don't have any particular resentment toward education or female teachers... but I def have had teacher sex fantasies, I'm a fan of humiliation kink, BDSM, IR sex and high school-based fuckery, and I'm 100% committing to the writing of a BDSM interracial teacher humiliation story as we speak. Or type. I guess I'm one of the "lunatics." Oh well. :D

Trying to psychoanalyze kinks is incredibly complicated, and usually not worth the effort? It generally emerges from a stew of influences like the one I just described and has at best an uncertain relationship with broader psychology.

That said? "Preggo catfights" are, one has to admit even from my rather extreme corner of the Kink Warehouse, a wee bit unusual. Especially with miscarriages as a plot point, Jeebus.

I would be surprised if a request could shock me. I've written multiple Aristocrat jokes, two won contests and I'm not exactly proud of that, lol. (Google it at your own risk if you don't already know what it is.) Those are some of the only stories I haven't saved between laptops. *shudders*

I think my favorite Aristocrats joke was the one by Sarah Silverman in the film The Aristocrats. She unnerved the butt of the joke so badly that the insecure mofo actually SUED her. VICTORY. :D

I thought he just threatened to sue her. Didn't realize he actually did.

To be fair, she is very good at delivering horrendous lines with perfect stoicism which adds to the disturbing nature of it, especially since she told it in first person and most tell it about unknown/unnamed others.

I didn't even know who Joe Franklin was until that movie.

Could be it didn't get to the point of an actual suit.

But yeah. She had a gift for "working stiff" comedically. That "joke" almost didn't feel like a joke because of the absolutely convincing sincerity of her tone and delivery, I do kinda get why he felt pressed.

Still. Funny as f--k. :)

I've got to question that. If he could see it hundreds of miles away in China, how many more people in Japan and Korea were much closer and almost certainly saw it? It had to have been hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people.

I'd have to research that; I know nothing about atomic explosions. The Empire of the Sun narrator may be more than a bit unreliable - he's only about thirteen, for one thing, and I'm sure he exaggerates more than a few things.

I'm pretty sure that Ballard's "true" autobiography of 2008 doesn't mention it.

Here is some speculation about it, and the answer - although they don't absolutely prove it -seems to be: no, he couldn't have seen anything. They don't seem to be trained physicists, however - you probably would need one of those for the full scientific proof.

I was going along with your premise until I read about the sausage and bacon. Wouldn't that violate the site's rules against - I don't know, snuff? I don't know if cannibalism per se is forbidden here, but it should be!

They're talking about the fireball or the mushroom cloud, not the flash. An intelligent entity 76 light years away could still detect the flash, because in that 100ms, I think it would have been the brightest event in the solar system, a man made cosmological event.

I'm not an atom-bomb physicist and I could have missed something, but I very much doubt it would be possible to see the Fat Man explosion from Shanghai.

The flash would've been well over the horizon. Fat Man exploded at an altitude of about 500m; horizon distance from that height is approximately 80 km. Nagasaki-Shanghai is around 800 km. Under some circumstances, atmospheric effects will let us see things over the horizon, but 800 km is a long way.

If the horizon weren't in the way: the total energy released by Fat Man was about 8.8 * 10^13 joules. Not all of that is in the form of light, but for the sake of argument let's suppose it is.

Not all that light is radiated at once; the fireball remains visible for many seconds. But again, for the sake of argument, let's suppose it was all radiated over a period of approximately 100 milliseconds (chosen as this is approximately the "shutter speed" of the human eye). So you'd have a brightness of approximately 8.8 * 10^14 joules/second during that 100ms period.

The Sun radiates about 3.8 * 10^26 joules per second, so it's about 4 * 10^11 times brighter. Of course, the Sun is also much further away: about 1.5 * 10^8 km, vs. 800 km Shanghai-Nagasaki. Adjusting for distance via inverse-square law, that still leaves the Sun about 12x brighter than our brightest possible Fat Man, to an observer in Shanghai, ignoring horizons.

In fact, the difference is going to be much more than that, for several reasons:

- Not all of the bomb energy is released as light (photons).

- Of the energy that is released as light, much of it isn't in the visible spectrum. This is true for both Sun and Fat Man, but much more so for Fat Man, because of differences in relevant temperatures; cf. Wien's displacement law if you want details. Much of Fat Man's radiant energy would have been in the form of UV and X-rays, which would then have been absorbed by air and ground, heating them up; some of that heat would then get re-radiated as visible and thermal (infra-red) wavelengths, but that's spread out over time. The Sun's temperature is just about optimised for emission in the visible spectrum.*

- Atmospheric attenuation: light from the Sun has to travel through about 10 km equivalent of atmosphere** vs. 800 km Nagasaki-Shanghai. Considering Rayleigh scattering (i.e. scattering by the air), visible light loses about 8% of intensity per 10 km of atmosphere. At 800 km, about 99.9% of Fat Man's visible emission is lost in the atmosphere. This doesn't include scattering by aerosols (clouds etc.) which would cause far more of a reduction.

- The Sun is a big disc in the sky, but from 800 km away, Nagasaki is effectively a point source. If we're ignoring atmospheric effects, then all the light fron Fat Man gets focussed onto one tiny spot in the retina, burning it out and creating a tiny blind spot. Much of that light won't be perceived because it's overloading a very small area of the retina and nothing hits the rest.

Note also that Nagasaki is close to due east from Shanghai, and the bombing was about 10 am Shanghai time, so anybody looking in that direction would've been looking fairly close to the sun.

All in all, even if somebody in Shanghai happened to be looking in the right direction at the right time, it seems hard to believe they could have seen the flash. People are pretty good at forming false memories after the fact, or misinterpreting things they did see.

*It might be more accurate to say that our eyes have evolved to receive light in the frequencies where the Sun emits most strongly.

**Earth's atmosphere extends about 300 km up, depending on what you count as the cutoff, but most of that is very very thin; it works out about the same as 10 km of sea-level atmosphere.

I once worked with a guy who had an obvious pregnancy fetish. Kept harassing a pregnant co-worker. He was given a warning but kept it up. He was fired. This was in the defense industry.

Thank you for your very detailed contribution. We have to keep in mind that this is a work of fiction. Jamie had lived under several years of intense stress, and the was in the middle of the chaotic closing of the prison camp and the end of the war itself. He surely didn't hear about Nagasaki until later. I don't think Ballard ever commented on it, but leaves it up to the reader.

This thread certainly has drifted if we are talking about the physics of atomic explosions.

During WW1, the guns of the Western Front could be heard in London.

When large mines were exploded under the German Lines. the shock wave was recorded at Manchester Univeristy.

During the 1940 blitz on London, the fires in London's docklands could be seen, reflected in clouds, up to eighty miles away.

I'm writing a teacher fantasy now; it's about a teacher who seduces a high school senior a couple of months before he graduates. She's quite kinky, and he does realize that she is exploiting his youth and inexperience but he's also too horny not to go along with it. She's definitely running the show, and despite his ambivalence, he couldn't manage it himself.

Seventy-six light years away, 76 years later he might see the flash if he is looking the right direction at the right moment, as that is all the flash last.

That's the point about the atomic flash. It's a permanent calling card that a race of intelligent beings has found that moment in physics where they have spilt the atom and made a bomb. It's only 100ms in duration, but mankind flashed its torch many times during the 40s, 50s and 60s, before tests went underground. The thermo-nuke sequence may be different, but since you need a fission bomb to start your fusion running, there's still the short duration double flash.

It's a bit of pet interest of mine (as you will gather), having written my first history paper on the war bombings in the seventies.

Bramblethorn, I think, is most likely right. I'm inclined to think it's Ballard's artistic licence, "remembered" afterwards. But it's always a pleasure to read a Bramblethorn paper on the subject.
