Where Is The Love

Hercules

Taking a second to clear the ringing from his ears, Hercules walked up to his sister. "Aphrodite, being mortal isn't always fun, you know? Things like sweat and hurting feet and broken nails are something that mortal women put up with every day of their lives. Here, " and he swept her up in his powerful arms. "You just aren't used to walking so much, and your mortal body can't take it. Don't worry about it, I'll carry you so you can rest."

Cradled in her brother's arms, her head nestled against his broad shoulder, Aphrodite found herself drifting off to sleep, dreaming things that she would probably never tell Hercules about...

Iolaus

Iolaus stood there, smacking the side of his head with his hand and wishing he could hear again.

He had been calmly walking along, talking to Hercules about the family reunion and a particular incident with his cousin when he found his ears assualted by a noise that would fell hawks from the skies.

"So, anyway, my cousin is standing there, hip deep in the river, not knowing who pushed him in when...." And then he couldnt hear anything but the echoe of his own voice.

He watched as Aphrodite waved her hand at them and moved her lips but he couldnt tell what she was saying for the ringing in his ears.

"What?," He mouthed to his fighting partner and best friend.

Hercules walked over and picked the now mortal goddess up and she soon fell to sleep in his arms as Iolaus' hearing was returning.

Moaning, he held his hands to his head and said,"Her body may be mortal but her lungs sure havent followed suit. Lets get to Persephone and see if she cant us into hell. I never thought I would say this but anything is better than being turned deaf by an enraged mortal-who-used-to-be-immortal."

Hercules

As Hercules walked along, cradling the sleeping Aphrodite in his arms, he chatted quietly with Iolaus about their plans. As the sun started its decline into the west, they reached the outskirts of Pseudopolis, where the noise of the festival began to cause Aphrodite to stir. Soon, she had wakened fully, seeming a bit confused as to where she was...

Aphrodite

Aphrodite was dreaming. She was at her temple and her followers were standing in line to pledge their loyalty to her. She could hear the buzzing of their voices as they entered her temple, set down their offerings, stated what they desired from her and left.

Aphrodite sat back with a smile, knowing that they could not see her. Granting those wishes that she knew were ment to be and holding off on those that were not. This was where she was ment to be.

But it was so hot in here. She didnt remember it being so humid in her temple. And what was that rythmic pounding. It had been going on in the background for what seemed like forever and she couldnt make it out. Thump-Thump, Thump-Thump. Never ceasing. It was disturbing yet comforting all the same. Just a bit annoying that she didnt know what it was.

She turned to Cupid who was standing by his mother's side and was about to bade him find out what that noise was while she watched the proceedings when a ray of light shone directly through the window and blinded her, causing her to close her eyes and put her arm over them.

This movement was acted on as Aphrodite was laying in Herc's arms and her arm came up and smacked him right in the face. "Ow," The goddess said as the sting went through her hand. Rousing out of her sleep, she looked around in confusion. "Whats this? Where's my temple? What are all the offerings doing outside? Someone doesnt know how to organize a tribute. I am going to have to talk to those priests of mine."

It took some minutes while she mumbled incoherantly before realizing that this was not for her but for another goddess. Which was not really a good thought to wake up to.

Struggling out of her brother's strong arms, which wasnt easy and, really, she had to wait for Herc to put her down himself, she placed her hands on her hips and looked around.

"You know, I thought I was bummed before but now its worse. I mean, you know me, Herc...not a jealous bone in my body." She glared at Hercules, challenging him to say anything to the contrary.

"But attending a feast for another goddess? Come on. Havent we gone a bit beyond tacky here? Besides, Persephone wont be interested in whats happening with little ole me. She has much, much more important things to worry about."

"You know, I think if we think real hard, we might find another solution to this thing. Why dont we all take a break and lets talk this over again."

She begin to walk back the way they had come when she felt Hercules' strong hand wrap around her upper arm, stopping her and she sighed.

"Herc," She said in a psuedo whisper,"Who do you think is the biggest gossip in Olympus?"

Shooting a hard gaze over to Iolaus, she said, "Dont even think about answering that, Studmuffin! Once Persephone and Demeter get ahold of something its as good as news. Oh, they dont mean to gossip but get them in one of those mother/daughter chats and before you know it, every god knows about it."

Iolaus

Iolaus was just about to answer the question which would have been very foolish on his part when Aphrodite cut him off. It was probably just as well. Had she made it a point, she could very easily have made things difficult for him once she regained her powers. He still did get the occasional girl, you know.

Snapping his mouth shut, he decided to play it smart for once and simply let Hercules deal with his sister.

Persephone

She was glancing over the offerings. The mortals at the festivale could not see her, of course, but they knew that their offerings were being looked upon and were arranging them in the best possible light as possible.

Persephone looked up in time to catch sight of Hercules and Iolaus standing just outside the village. A smile spread over her face and she sped through the village to greet them.

She stopped as she came near the demi-god. An odor hit her that would have fallen an Olympian and she stepped back out of the way of the smell.

"Hercules! Im...cough...glad to see you...cough...but what in Zeus' name?"

It was then that Persephone noticed Aphrodite and her eyes flew open wide.

"I think you better come into the temple. We can talk there."

Hercules

Fixing Aphrodite with his steely blue eyes before she had a chance to flee in embarassment over her situation, Hercules took her by the hand and led her, following Persephone into her temple, with Iolaus coming behind. Once inside, Hercules wasted no time getting to the point, explaining Aphrodite's predicament.

"So, you see Persephone, all we really need is for you to help us get into Tartarus, past Cerberus, and keep Hades occupied while we talk to Tantalus. " Knowing this was a pretty big favor, Hercules turned on his most high-wattage smile.

Persephone

"Is that all," Persephone said in mock compliance,"Gee, I could do that and be back in time for the festival. That is if my dear husband Hades doesnt pitch a fit and bring all of the underworld down on our heads. I was up in Olympus when this whole thing with Xena and then Aphrodite was playing out. He is not too happy, Hercules. He didnt even want to talk about it to me and he always takes every chance he gets to be with me when he can wrangle some time off from meeting out punishments to the dead."

She sat back with a sigh and looked at Aphrodite. "Fortunatly the only thing that Zeus said is that Aphrodite has to find a way to restore her powers herself and that no god or goddess can go out of thier way to help her. She has to do it in a way that will make her appreciate the gift of being the Goddess of Love so that she doesnt abuse it again."

"He practiacally put Hephaestus under house arrest because he was ready to bring Aphrodite the nector himself. He is almost worst than Hades when it comes to being in love with his wife."

Standing, she said,"Well, what is one festival more or less. Its not like they are going to know if I attended or not and the priests know what to do with the offerings. I would not mind the chance to have some time with Hades and it might not hurt to talk him down from his mad."

Giving Aphrodite a glance she added,"Besides. I know how I would feel if it were me. I know the gods dont usually throw their hand in to help each other but I cant picture Greece without love. Besides, I owe you big time, Hercules for being a go between between my mother and Hades. I figure this will pay that in full."

Iolaus

Iolaus didnt know whether to breath a sigh of relief or get really nervous now. Getting in to the underworld was going to be easier but if Hades caught what they were trying to do things could go very bad for them. After all there was a point in all of their lives when they were going to end up in his domain.

Taking a deep breath he concluded that this was simply one of those 'can't win for losing' situation and the only thing he could do now was what he always did. Back up Hercules.

"Great," He said putting on a false brave front,"Then what are we waiting for? Hell to freeze over. Lets go."

He knew it was a bad joke but something had to break this tense atmosphere.

Hercules

Hercules just looked at Iolaus, the wince on his face saying without words just how bad that joke was...

"Thanks, Persephone... pull this off, and I will owe you one." Hercules smiled again, and turned to Aphrodite. "Are you ready for this, sis? Just stay close until we get to see Tantalus, then we'll talk to him, and get out of there." He added in a soft mutter to himself, "Getting past Cerberus... again... shouldn't be all that close to impossible."

The heroes and goddesses gathered close, and were swept up in Persephone's power, which transported them to a place they all knew and loathed... Tartarus.

Persephone

When no one else had any comments or bad jokes to make, Persephone placed a hand on Hercules and Iolaus' arms and told Hercules to put an arm around Aphrodite.

Moments later they had disappeared from the temple though the preists only knew that three, rather familiar people, had gone into the back of the temple to talk. When the goddess left, they paused momentarily feeling that something had changed but then moving on in their tasks.

In that moment of realization from her priests, Persephone had already brought the three to Tartarus.

Moments later, the floor shook as with an earthquake and the guardian of the underground, Cerberus, appeared, his huge body blocking the entrance to Tartarus and preventing anyone from leaving.

The three headed dog looked around and his eyes quickly found the intruders. Growling, he lowered his head meanacingly.

"Cerberus!," Persephone said in a chiding tone,"Dont you know who I am?"

The dog's heads swung over to her and the expression changed as he caught a wiff of Persephone. Lowering his head, he whined and the goddess went over to lovingly pat him on his middle head.

"It's okay, boy. Mommy, isnt mad at you. You were only doing your job. These are Mommy's friends. They just want to talk to someone for a minute. Lets go find Daddy and surprise him, shall we? I have a special treat for you, baby."

With a wave of her hand, three steaks appeared before Cerberus and each head happily wolfed the meat down.

Turning to Hercules, she said,"I will handle my husband. You three get done and get out....quickly. When you are ready simply say that you are and I will get you out of here. If Hades doesnt catch on first. Otherwise I will have to think fast."

Moving to sit on the neck of the middle head, Persephone waved to Hercules and company and then let the pet take her in the direction of Hades, knowing the dog would know the whereabouts of it's master.

Iolaus

Iolaus feels the floor shake and grabs onto the nearest rock formation to keep from falling. He grimaces as the familiar form of Cerberus comes into the area and swallows hard. He didnt think Herc's 'nice doggie' was going to work this time either and he didnt see a boulder to throw for a playtoy.

He was taken totally offguard by Persephone's attitude toward the beast and his mouth dropped open as she stood before it and chastised it. Even more when the dog bent down and whimpered before her.

Turning to Hercules, he mouthed,"Mommy? Daddy? Baby?" Gods could be wierd sometimes.

Once Persephone was gone, Iolaus said,"I dont know about you two but I am all for taking her advice. In and out. And we might live to tell about it."

Hercules

"Good doggie... nice doggie... oh boy." Hercules slowly backed away from the monstrous canine, and motioned for the others to do the same. Once out of that chamber and into the tunnels, he spoke up, "Sounds like a plan to me, Iolaus. Aphrodite, are you okay to walk now? If I remember right, Tantalus isn't all that far away."

Aphrodite

Aphrodite was quiet through the whole aweful ordeal. Having to bare her problems to and accept help from Persephone simply did not sit well with her.

Setting her chin she marched in front of the men, not saying a word. She was determined to do this no matter what, she would show all the other gods she could do things on her own. Zeus must think she was a delicate piece of fluff and she bet the other gods were taking bets that she wouldnt make it. It would be just like them.

Well, she would show them all. She could do this on her own and then she would have something to say at the next meeting on Olympus you could bet on that.......

Aphrodite gave a short cry as the ground beneath her begin to crumble and she begin to fall into the river that ran beside the path. Fortunately for the goddess, she was able to cry out Hercule's name before she went in, submerged and gulping in mouthfuls of the water. Unfortunately, it was the river Lethe river of forgetfulness.

Cupid

Cupid was not about to let anything bad happen to his mother, regardless of what the old guy had to say about no gods helping her while she was stuck as a mortal. Following her around, keeping out of sight was pretty easy, really. Once she hooked up with Hercules, he was tempted to go off and have some fun, but he stuck around, just in case. When he overheard them talking about going to Tartarus, he knew he'd made the right decision. After all, that was one dangerous place, even if she did have Hercules and his mortal friend helping her.

He arrived just after they did, petted Cerberus, and followed them. Aphrodite, in one of her moods, pulled ahead of the others, and promptly fell right into Memnosyne. Cupid was ready to fly in and rescue her, but he saw that Hercules, ever the hero, was already doing it.

Hmm... the mischevious godling thought, after gulping down that much of the water, I bet Mom doesn't even know her name at the moment... Cupid grinned broadly at the hilarious idea which occurred to him just then. Ever impulsive, he drew his bow, and fired one of his enchanted arrows straight into Aphrodite's back, just as Hercules was pulling her out of the water. For good measure, he swiftly fired another one into Hercules.

Cupid then withdrew into the shadows... This is gonna be GREAT!

Hercules

One second, Hercules was talking to Iolaus. The next second, he noticed that Aphrodite had strode on ahead, determinedly. "She better be careful.. we are very near Lethe over here," he said in a low voice to Iolaus. Hercules thought for a second, and decided that 'careful' was not a word commonly used to describe the goddess of love, and called out to her, "Aphrodite! Be..." his shout was cut off by a splash and a cry for help, "careful." He winced and ran to the ledge where she'd fallen in.

Lethe was very shallow, and posed no danger, apart from the memory-erasing property of its waters. Hercules lay down on the ledge, reached out to Aphrodite, and grabbed her hand.

Her weight was like a feather to him, so he easily pulled her up to safe ground. When Hercules saw the beautiful goddess of love, her silken dress clinging to her every curve, he felt a sharp pang in his heart, and realized that he had fallen totally in love with Aphrodite. He simply stood there, dumbstruck, staring at the woman of his dreams. Strange he'd never noticed it before, but he knew now...

Aphrodite

She felt something pulling her out of the water and pulling her clear of it. She stood on the edge of the bank, wet and cold and shivering as her clothes clung to her. Coughing and sputtering, she looked around to find a man in front of her that could have been a statue brought to life.

She gasped as she took in his handsome bronzed form. His long hair framing his face seemed to her to have a glow about it. And his eyes seemed to capture her soul.

Slowly a smile beamed across her face and she moved to place her delicate hands on his chest and look up into his eyes, getting lost in them as she did so.

"Well, Handsome," She said in a husky voice,"You look like the kind of guy who could show a girl a good time. I bet there's a party animal hidden somewhere in there. What say you and I find someplace to let that animal out?"

Looking up at him, her lips drooping with the passion she felt for this stranger, she licked her lips slowly and let her hands roam over his bare chest.

"Something tells me this is going to be a very fortunate meeting," She whispered to him, moving even closer than before.

Iolaus

Iolaus took in Aphrodite's rescue with a sigh. He didnt try to interfere because he knew Herc had it well in hand and that the river really posed no danger besides what Hercules had mentioned.

Once Aphrodite was on her feet, he moved over to them to make sure that she was okay. Knowing the goddess, she could find a way to get hurt even in shallow water.

"Is everyone okay?," He said looking from one to another. Neither of them answered him and he spoke a little louder.

"Hello? Is everyone alright? Herc? Aphrodite? Have you both lost your memories?" But Hercules wasnt wet so that couldnt be it.

"Herc! Buddy! Hey! Its me, Iolaus. Remember? Your buddy. Your pal. The guy standing three feet away from you and yelling at the top of his lungs?!"

"Oh boy, something is definately wrong here," he said just as Aphrodite seemed to become aware of her surroundings.

Iolaus' jaw dropped for the second time that day as he saw Aphrodite snuggle up to Hercules and say something about going off alone. Had the world gone mad? And Hercules seemed to be doing nothing about it. In fact, Hercules seemed to be leaning a little too close to Aphrodite there. His head bending down as if he were....oh oh.

"Okay, time to break this up," Iolaus said trying to get some distance between Hercules and Aphrodite by placing his hand between them and moving them away from each other. Not that it helped at all seeing how Hercules was a bit stronger than he was.

"Come on, Hercules," Iolaus said to him,"Get a grip. This is your sister. Okay, half-sister if you want to get technical but think about it! It's Aphrodite! What in all of Hades is going on here? Think, Herc, think!"

Hercules

Aphrodite's touch on his bare chest sent ribbons of fire throughout his very being, and he drew her closer to him. Hercules' hands caressed her shoulders, and her soft, red lips parted in a sigh. Iolaus was saying something, but Hercules paid him no attention, lost in Aphrodite's deep blue eyes.

Hercules felt something tug at his arm, attempting to pull him away from his one, true love, but he ignored it, bending down to brush Aphrodite's lips with his own. She sighed, and melted her lips against his own as the world vanished about them.

Still... something was nagging at Hercules, something was not quite right... Suddenly, they were drenched with cool water, and they broke their passionate embrace to see Iolaus standing there holding a now-empty waterskin. "Buddy, you better have a VERY good reason for doing that!" Hercules growled, ominously.

Iolaus

"Would I risk a sure death if I didnt have a good reason?," Iolaus said....talking very, very fast. "Herc, get ahold of yourself. That is Aphrodite. Remember? Bratty sister. Shows up at the worst possible moment? The Goddess of Love who's appearance is sure to at least double any surrounding danger?"

"Dont you think that something is a bit off here? One minute you are talking to me about how you will be glad when this is all over and Aphrodite has her powers back so you can have some peace and quiet. And the next minute you are acting like a lovesick teenager in spring who has suddenly been hit by Cupid's arrow. What is going on here?"

Aphrodite

His lips pressed to hers and she could feel the heat rise even in this place..wherever that was. Her slender arms wrapped around his neck and drew him willingly to her.

Her body pressed up against his so that he could feel the heat of it through her wet clothing. Her hands ran lovingly through his hair as their mouths locked in exploration.

And then she was shivering again and gasping as water poured over her head into her eyes. Pulling away from the stranger whom she had decided was her soulmate, she sputtered and coughed yet again.

Looking around her eyes fell on a smaller man with curly blonde hair and, the way her bronze god was talking, it was he who had doused them with the water.

Shaking her head to rid herself of the excess water, she moved toward him again and wrapped one arm around his waist. Giving the smaller man a glare, she turned her face up to her love's and pouted.

"Hey, Stud, why dont you lose the kid for a little bit." Her hand moved down his muscled back to his taunt rear and she goosed it before adding,"Its getting a bit crowded in here."

IolausI

Iolaus looked from Aphrodite to Hercules.

"Kid? Kid? Okay, Herc. You have to admit that there is something wrong with this picture. I mean, I know your sister has lost her memory, but I even that wouldnt make her swoon all over you. Okay...that came out wrong but think.....this is not right!"

Hercules

Wiping the water from his face, Hercules tried to listen to his best friend, but it wasn't at all easy with Aphrodite so near. He put his arm around her and looked at Iolaus, who was trying to explain why he'd doused them. Hercules began to realize that there really was something very strange with the way they'd been acting, but Aphrodite grabbed his ass, and he was totally distracted again.

"Oh, really?!" Hercules cried, and turned on Aphrodite, picking her up in the air and smiling at her as she giggled at him. He stopped, though, and set her down, a thoughtful expression on his face. "Just stay there for a minute darling." He turned back to Iolaus. "We are on a dangerous mission in Tartarus to restore Aphrodite's godhood, she has lost her memories, and we've just fallen madly in love. You think there is something strange about that?"
