Which crowd are you in?

Much to his credit he's got Miles Davis in the changer. Much to my consternation he's also got Jimmy Buffet. What is with Jimmy Buffet, someone explain this to me, intergenerational translation needed.

Hey, Buffett is not bad. He sold out with his 32nd record to finally get a number one album, but he is an excellent songwriter when it comes down to it.

For the record, I listen to jsut about everything, from classical, to Jazz, to rock, to country, to ska, to reggae, to punk, to heavy metal, to electronica, new wave, to ambient, to celtic, to world beat, to....

hmm... easier to say what I DON'T listen to.

Gansta rap, Crunk, Dirty South, Thrash metal, modern US pop. that's about it.

Oc course my music collection is ripped to my hard drive, and takes up over 270 GB of space...

I can hang with the geek crowd, the fantasy crowd, the art crowd, and the preppy crowd.

Sci-Fi and Fantasy, Old Guard Sci-Fi and Fantasy that is. The d20 system is for punks who want to join the RPG collective. Kirk could kick Picard's ass any day. Spock trumps Data and I dream of a Doctor Who/Stargate/Farscape crossover.

Musically, pretty much anything from Abba to Rod Zombie. C&W, older Rap, Filk, Metal, Goth, you name it. I went a little nuts in the old Napster days. Hell, I even have some Arrogant Worms cd's.

That said though, I am a bit of a chameleon. I know enough to blend in pretty much with any crowd. Although it is pretty cool I got to be on TV for 8 weeks of a TV series so I will probably get known for being kinda goofy on that.

Sounds delicious to me...

Xelebes-- you must forgive me! 21-- ok! :D

Hmmm... Kirk vs Picard.

Now THAT is an uber-geek "what if" arguement from Hell. Kinda like who would win with a "Superman vs Thor" comics arguement... *LOL*

Now if we are going to have a geek-feud, lets keep it on topic.

Which society/culture is kinkier/more sadistic/pervy-er?

Melnibone' or Gor?

Sit on the sidelines if you don't know about Melnibone', albino emperors and a black 0==={==========> named 'Stormbringer".

certainly yes.

certainly no.

Bredon

weighing in, i totally concur

now, to state my own I'm sure very unpopular opinion, Dax and Sisko could beat the lot of them :p

(OK, I guess I just placed myself in the uber-geek group. And no, I don't go to Star Trek conventions! )

Sir Evil_Geoff, pardon the completely ignorant question but am curious about???? 0==={==========>

THOR! - every time!

Jadzia Dax, not Ezri. Ezri's just... well... whimpy. Jadzia has class. Elegance. Klingon for a husband. She ROCKS! :nana:

Completely agreed :nana:

You know, I hated Ezri Dax so much that I literally completely forgot about her - the only flaw in the final season....

You probably get Buffett for the same reason I do - just a hometown boy. Jackson isn't that far from Mobile, you know. Interestingly enough, when he comes to Phoenix, he sells out, too. And his place in Vegas on the Strip is always packed.

<rubs hands and grins gleefully>

Ah, time to rack up the geek points in ways that have yet to be believed.

Also an old school tabletop RPG'er, and I have to take issue with Penalt's remarks about d20. I found D&D 3.0 to be a great liberator of character design and concept. No longer was every single tenth level thief virtually identical (some possible fluctuations in stats and equipment, but functionally cookie-cutter), except for the person behind the sheet. You could design and choose just what kind of fighter or paladin or ranger you wanted to portray, by skills and feats. Better, paladins were opened to nonhuman races. Did it bring a bunch of new people to the tabletop, some of whom are poseurs? Sure. But the good outweighed the bad, especially with the 3.5 release, and the errata for same.

Spock V. Data? Spock was cooler, easier to relate to. Which is a tribute to Brent Spiner's acting, IMO. Making Data that mechanical cannot have been easy.

Kirk V. Picard? Kirk would hand Picard his tuchas in a plain brown paper bag. The writers of TNG split Kirk in two parts: Picard, the tactical genius, and Riker, the brash, physical adventurer. So Picard is half a man facing a man and a half (in Kirk). You do the math.

And I concur, Jadzia Dax and Benjamin Sisko could kick the lot of them's arses up around their ears. Ezri was a vaguely cute waste of skin, though.

Thor V. Supes?

are you serious?

Pre-Crisis on Infinte Earths, Supes could take Thor out with one pinky.

Immediately post-John Byrne rewrite, The Last Son of Krypton would have his hands full. Probably his toughest physical match other than Doomsday. John Byrne seriously powered Superman down, made him a little more believable.

More recently, we're back to the one pinky flick knockout. Norse god of Thunder goes down for a TKO in the first round.

And Melnibone' V Gor...

...

Nope, they're almost even. Melnibone' was more hardcore S&M, teen male angst personified. Gor was more D/S, anti-feminist rant. Different flavors, same quantitative result.

I have no freaking clue what y'all are on about.

With regards to the battle of the Trekkers see:

Kirk and Sisko vs Picard and Janeway

Regarding Supes vs. Thor see:
Supes vs. Thor

As far as the d20 system went. What really cheesed me about it was how it borged all the other RPG's. 3rd edition was nice but not extended into other games. 'nuff said.

and I get to live with that geekdom.

But guess which one of us has the star trek uniform, insignias, idic, and charm bracelet?

and no, he didn't buy me any of that!

SpectreT--
*now* I'm feeling really at home :D (no kidding). You are reminding me of a good friend (even resemble him a bit)

Dax wins so utterly.

But I'm for Sisco *and* Picard, Penalt, what do I do??

Picard's a bottom fag and that's why I like him-- I never forgot that thing with Q...

Mamid--
But guess which one of us has the star trek uniform, insignias, idic, and charm bracelet?

That's swell :D
Btw. has anyone ever though about scening in the Star Trek universe?
I just have to think of-- what's his name-- (I'm getting old) torturing Picard-- over two shows-- I was really in awe when I saw that... yumm...
I think that screams for a new thread--

"We are the d20 system. Your background and rationale will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile." :D

Hazards of Wizards making it "open source". It did serve well for Star Wars, too, even if I do miss West End's D6 extravaganza. It did (after so much tweaking it almost isn't the same system) make for the second best superhero system, as well. Mutants and Masterminds, if you didn't know where I was going with that. My nod for best superhero system? Mayfair's DC Heroes, 3rd edition. I know Pulsar puts it out now as "Blood of the Heroes", but they created powers that really weren't necessary, and it's impossible to relate to their metaplot, so Blood of the Heroes is so much roadkill.

Appliancy.

Where one takes fuck machines to an even more crude level.

I agree Spock was cooler but he was only fully functional while in heat and he was only in heat once every seven years!

Kirk would kick Picard's ass at first glance but I want a Picard vibrating doll that would be Shatastic! Wait, back to the topic at hand, at first glance because Kirk was always fighting or fucking, but, Picard was a thinker. Not only that, if you take off both of their shirts you'll see Kirk has a lil beer belly but Picard is cut. Which means, if they had to fight, Picard not only has the physicality to win but also the brain to stratagise which my friends is a truly deadly combination!

Oh did someone say Sisco vrs Janeway? Cause I was totally into Sisco! H-O-T. All I liked about Janeway was her sexy voice. I liked the actress MUCH better as Mary Ryan on the soap Ryan's Hope. (Do you know who played Siobhan Ryan and has also had roles in China Beach and CSI?)

I like the old AD&D system. I won't buy the latest editions, they are too complicated, I don't need them. However I will apply rules, monsters, magic / technology and treasure from any gaming system I see fit. Right now I'm playing AD&D, White Wolf and Morrow Project games table top, no, not all at the same time.

I was able to read Melinbone' but couldn't finish the first Gor.

I don't get Buffet but many people around here love or hate him. Me I just say, it's okay. I so don't do filk though.

I don't do comics much but when I was young I preferred Shenna of the Jungle and The Fabulous Four.

Fury, and you're kinky too! I think I'm in love... and I'm gonna make you turn GREEN! ! !

My 1st ed Morrow Project is autographed by Richard Tucholka.

As are my copies of Fringeworthy and FTL:2448 :D We play tested a buncha stuff for him when he was gaming with the Detroit Metro Gamers back in the late 70's early 80's...

AD&D, gawd... I was playing Runequest, Stormbringer, Champions, Villains & Vigilantes, Traveller (1st ed, thank you!), Star Trek the RPG, Call of Cthulu, and so many other games... *sighs* Damn I miss that.

My regular gaming buddies switched to stuff like Starfleet Battles, BattleTech and other miniatures/wargames. I got tired of the "must buy new supplement each week to keep up with new rules, new equipment, what everyone else has" design philosophy of most of the tactical wargames.

And damnit! I miss playing Dark Confrontation LARP too!

I don't _usually_ go to Trek conventions... I go to SF cons! This last Dragon*Con was the first I had missed since 1994. Damned heart attack 10 days before the con will do that to ya!

Thank you for the "Sir" you tacked on there Neon. Please understand that I appreciate the honorific *smiles* but it is not at all necessary. But if, and only if, I rate that title in your eyes, please feel free to continue using it.

As for the 0==={==========>, that's a sword, the bold black supposed to be representing Stormbringer. Stormbringer was a mind-bogglingly powerful black runesword, capable of slaying gods (and a nasty habit of killing the friends and family of whoever wielded the sword!)...

Oh gods, the original Traveller. Loved that sucker. "This is Free Trader Beowulf...." Even wrote a computer program back on the old appleII to create ships according to the High Guard rules. I've played the Vampire LARP, didn't care for it much. The Star Wars LARP was pretty fun though.

I actually tried running a game of "bring a character from any d20 system" to the table. Oh boy. Lets see, we had:

An Immortal, from Highlander
An Aes Sedai, from Wheel of Time
A Human Sorceress, from D&D
A Jedi, from Star Wars.
and
a Celestial Centaur Fighter, from D&D.

The mechanics worked fine, the worldviews....not so much.

*chuckles*
We did something similar... Called it "Time Bagel" (in a salute to The Guardian in the "City on the Edge of Forever" ep of Star Trek)

One of the games we did had a bunch of D&D fanatics taking their fave D&D characters... and I had an Agent of Kakatal from the Stormbringer RPG. Burning a village down around their ears kinda woke the D&D'ers up to the possibility of magic wielding warriors and other game sytems... :)
