Who was the first politician you voted against?

Because his dad was an honest, forthright and good man.

He was capable -- saved quite a few American car companies by founding American Motors, and ran Michigan better than any governor before or since.

He made positive things happen, not the opposite.

Hmm. And you didn't think the same about his son? ...(Not that you'd be alone.)

Well, actually, I think he conceded to Obama in 2012. But it was ummm...48% to 51%, I believe. Scarily, scarily close. I always imagine the US as a fascist society out of a comic book under Romney.

I was 18 when they lowered the voting age to 18 in 1972.

I can proudly say that I voted against Richard Nixon at that time.

If I had been a bit older, I would definitely have voted for Mitt Romney's father, George Romney as both governor of my home state (Michigan) and in the 68 race, had he not made the infamous "brainwashing" statement.

George was 20 times the man his son will ever be.

George Romney was a true populist. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

The one and only politician I've ever voted against was Sara Palin. I was having a hell of a time during that election cycle deciding who I'd vote for, Obama or McCain and I was leaning toward the latter.

But when they chose Sara as John's running mate that decided it for me. There is no way in hell I'd ever vote for her, ever.

I would have a hard time thinking of people I actually wanted to vote for.

Most of my general election votes have been against.

In my current location it never mattered who I voted for at Westminster. The Conservative majority in this seat was so high it was one of the safest for them in the country.

Local County and City elections? Nearly as safe for the Conservatives except for a short-lived Lib/Labour coalition at City Hall.

Now UKIP might break the mould locally. The local long-standing Tory MP might retire. If he does - many of those who used to vote solid Conservative could flirt with the idea of supporting UKIP. That, combined with boundary changes, might prove enough to let the Liberal Democrats have a realistic chance at Westminster and City Hall. The Liberal Democrats problem is that they are nearly as unpopular as the Conservatives.

I think the Conservatives are putting pressure on their MP to stand for one more term. That would be unfortunate for him. He has been a very good constituency MP for decades - dealing efficiently with problems for his constituents whoever they voted for. He has worked hard. Even his political opponents admit that he has been a good MP. But he isn't as young as he was and he deserves a well-earned retirement.

Unfortunately for the other parties, Liberal Democrat and Labour, their constituency machines are very weak. They haven't got the money nor the competent political workers to mount effective campaigns. If they want to choose local candidates? They have a choice between the too old and the downright nutcases.

I'll probably end up voting against people I know, because I know them too well. They'd be disastrous as MPs or Councillors.

As for the existing UKIP Councillors? The reality is that they stood for UKIP, or defected to UKIP, because they are (insert offensive remark about lack of intelligence) and impossible for any other political party to consider as candidates.

I almost think the Republicans chose McCain as the most likely to lose candidate. When the polls were too close, they scrambled and found the Governor of Alaska to make sure.

This.

Until McCain chose his running mate and took a serious right turn I had considered voting for him. Had Hillary gotten the Democratic nomination I would have had to abstain from voting in protest. Mostly because with all of the issues to choose from during GW Bush's presidency she chose.... Violence in video games. Seriously? Not torture? Not the off the books Iraqi campaign? Not the real encroachment on our civil liberties by the "Patriot Act"? Violent video games was her pet issue?

Bill Clinton.

That is when Myself and the Democratic party parted ways.

Yes.

I was a Democrat. I never thought much about it before that. My family always voted Democratic party.

But Bill Clinton woke me up. I had NO ideal who he was the first time I saw him on TV running for the highest office in the land.

I immediately knew he was the biggest lair that I had ever encountered. I couldn't roll with that so I started looking at other candidates...Their voting records, their speeches and the "vision" for the future they cranked out compared to their past performance.

I came to the startling conclusion that almost all of the liberal Democratic candidates held opposite viewpoints an just about everything I believed in.

What happen to the people who believed in this country and at least intended to do what they could to improve it?

Fuck me! They were mostly in the Republican party. So WTF? happened!

They took a turn for the far left and I went straight.

I looked closer and realized I was more conservative than liberal and I really did not care what party a candidate belonged to as long as (in my opinion)they were the best person running for the job.

So YES, I would vote for and have for a Democrat Where they we the closest match to my thoughts and beliefs about how this country should be ran.
