America is only the greatest nation in terms of wealth, power and influence, not otherwise (and before WWII, the greatest nation in those terms was Britain, and before that France, and before that Spain . . .). Many other countries have us quite embarrassingly beat on many quality-of-life and economic-sustainability measures -- and by measures of liberty and democracy, too. American exceptionalism is a very extremely pernicious and dangerous form of bullshit.

"Quasi Socialist" would be a definite improvement, if you compare the U.S. with other countries that now can be so described. But we really cannot hope for much from Obama in that regard; he has had six years to start acting like a socialist and he hasn't, he is still governing from the center-right, almost indistinguishably from Bill Clinton.

As for the police state, that process started with the W Admin (if not with Nixon). Obama has indeed and disappointingly done little to reverse it, and I now wonder whether reversing it is politically possible at all, in the Information Age and GWOT Age combined.

Expanding a welfare state, where people become totally dependent on the government for their basic needs leads to a government can then tell people where they will live, how they will live, where they will work (and what their work will be.) I think that we fought a war in the late 1800's to stop people from doing that to other people.

The expansion of rules and regulations that impede normal citizens from bettering their lives, and the lives of their children.

I don't hate him. I do think he's incompetent.

The reason why I think he's incompetent is he lacks either the force of will, the knowledge, or both necessary to control Congress enough to get some of his better ideas through. Some of the major problems with Obamacare are because of the compromises that were necessary in Congress to even get the thing passed.

If the political situation had been different when he came to office, he'd probably be a great President. Unfortunately, it wasn't.
