I don't think anybody is beating Trump to the Republican nomination, even more so that his rivals have made so many false steps since. Pence is hated by most of the base since December 2020. DeSantis could have impersonated a Reagan or Bush type about conservative economics and welcoming some immigrants, allied himself to the anti-Trump Republicans of old, but he instead signed a 6-week abortion law in Florida that is a disaster in a national contest, while he also caters to the narrow minded petit-bourgeois instead of big business. Basically, DeSantis wants to fight Trump on Trump's territory of "America First" and going after the conservative evangelicals. That is surely doomed to fail, especially as Trump will have no qualms whatsoever in getting deep in the gutter when it comes to personal insults and attacks, and even humor.

US capitalism and its so-called "democracy" is a joke. Big business corporations and banks run this society, not the people, not "democracy". Trump railing against the swamp, therefore, attracts a lot of supporters and sympathizers. RFK Jr. condemning Biden's war in Ukraine attracts some support.
