It is past 8 as I turn out the lights in my office and walk down the hallway. As you would imagine all cubes are deserted and the cleaning lady is almost to the end of her daily cycle. I walk outside in the cool air to the only car in the lot. Earlier call to Shawna had been brief. She wanted to me stop at the usual diner and pick up some dinner. She was too bored to cook any.

I had recently been promoted to the Principal's position that brought responsibility of overseeing three other projects. Not that it made difference. I was always busy for most of the five years Shawna and I have been married. With the exception of our time together before our wedding and the first year. The graph of time we spent together could fairly represent the income of any company in trouble. It was sloping downwards as time went by.

Of course I am working hard to keep us in good humor. Live in a proper neighborhood, drive the right car and for Shawna to remain busy doing nothing. The perfect couple who had little time for one another. Of late not even in bed...

((this is a start to a role play ... waiting for my partner to be the lovely wife))

I looked at the empty dining room table, yet again. Too bored to cook. Too tired of him working late to care. I looked at our wedding picture on the wall. The bride smiling so happily. I looked so happy on that day. And now, now I spend the majority of my time waiting for him. Even when he is at home he is on his phone, email, text and talking about the office, about the projects. And her I am. Waiting.

I looked down at my slim fit jeans and my soft pink sweater. I still look like that bride on the wall. I just don't smile as much any more.

I had called ahead to our usual diner for food to go. They were as efficient and that is the reason I patronized them. No wasted minute.

"Hi"

I turn around. The soft voice sounded familiar. I could not see who called. I stopped and waited.

"Hi Scott"

I heard that voice again and now I knew who it belonged to.

"Scott, I haven't seen Shawna in weeks. We used to take a spin c lass together but now I am doing pilates instead. How are things with you guys?" Kelly tossed her blond curls back as she spoke. She was an opposite to Shawna in almost every way. Shawna was petite with dark hair and dark eyes and lovely porcelain skin. Kelly had a head full of blond curls, big blue eyes and tan, long legs.

Her order was being boxed up as she waited.

"what a nice surprise. It has been a while since we have seen you and Jon."

I was always tongue tied with her when the Dyson's visited us. I secretly admired Kelly curls and her long legs. Today she was wearing a flowing skirt that hardly reached her knees.

"Shawna has been getting lazy lately. I notice that pilates have been doing you no harm." I was surprised by my glib answer to her. Very unlike me.

"Why don't you and Shawna come over for dinner on Friday? Jon and I would love to have you over to our new house."

She twisted one of her curls around her finger as she spoke.

Why did she always made my heart jump a beat. She was wearing a round neck top and that did plunge. Keep yourself respectable Mr Scott. I said to myself.

"Why that would be a delight. Where is Jon today, it has been a while since we had a beer together."

((happens so often that some individuals release the right pheromones))

Not that I had ever ventured out to Jon for a drink. In fact I could hardly remember ever calling him on my own, except when Shawna had me make arrangement for a common picnic a while ago. By that token all my friends are husbands of my wife. We would meet the couples socially and the boys would get together and have their usual beer. Most of them were career people.

"I will tell Shawna. Or better still why don't I ask her to call you."
