Yes, we're spoiled. But most of us are also shielded from immediate negative consequences resulting from the decisions and behavior of our political leaders. That fact has an enormous (and in my opinion, deleterious) impact on the way this country is run.

Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with some sort of "mandatory government service". Not necessarily building a conscript military again.. maybe reconstituting the CCC. Some sort of alternative to college that will give America's youth opportunities to get out into the world and learn some essential skills and see things from a view point other than "the hood".

I would argue that it's also useful for young men and women to learn that life isn't all about tree-lined suburban streets where million-dollar homes are commonplace. Misguided and poorly-informed youngsters are everywhere, not just in "the 'hood."

I have to agree. Right now this would be a good thing for the UK's youth, which is spiralling further and further out of control. Give them something where they can learn skills and gain a broader view point on life and the world.
