Windows Media Player.

What OS and what version of Media Player.

Btw there are free alternatives to most of microsloths software.

XP SP2 and WMP11.

I know there are alternatives to Microsoft's stuff but I can't fault WMP except for this pesky thing. And I'd rather try and get it fixed than go about finding something else.

Have you tried going to run and type msconfig and go to the start up tab and uncheck media player from there?

When I press Ctrl - Alt - Delete to bring up the Task Manager, WMP is running. I didn't ask it to start, and I don't have it set to load up when I turn on the computer; if I want it, i'll ask for it. When I end the process in the task manager, it keeps starting again and again, possibly 10 times before it gets the picture and doesn't load again. Anyone know how I can stop it running unnecessarily?

Check and see if you have WMP set to automatically check for updates. Since you aren't seeing an open window with WMP in it, I suspect that what you're seeing is only the automaic update portion or some other monitoring function. If you can turn that function off, it will stop loading.
