World War II: Behind Enemy Lines - (IC)

Nathan noticed the look that Mike had he had seen it before in all the comanding officers he had served under, it was a look of a leader who's mind was in the war at all times. He looked to Mike with a nod and said "I have three shots of morphine and I always carry plasma but not much." Nathan did a ammo check and looked at the faces of his new comrads he was releived to see very little fear.

"You have morphine and plasma but your not a medic? Strange. Very strange." He wondered how a non-medic managed to get ahold of such a large amount of medical supplies. Only medics really carried that stuff. He decided to shrug it off.

Iska

Reaching into her pockets, Iska looked through what supplies she had. Scavanging was a way of life for her in battle, and a necessity. Taking out the wrapped up bundle, she placed it in Mike's hands, having to reach over a few soldiers to do so.

"If you are our medic, then you will know how to make what medical supplies we have go to their best use. In the field I strip most dead for their gear, ammunition and medical supplies mainly. Food I've never trusted so much, not after several of my squad were poisoned in my early days in command. But if this can help," she added, indicating a mix of both Russian and German morphine and field dressings, "then you are welcome."

Crossing one leg over the other, she looked out towards the city.

"Do you have a plan?"

Salima Minoum

Salima had no medical supplies, how could she? She wondered if they expected her to into any fights. She only had her tiny pistol and no combat experience at all.

Mike Adams

Mike slouched forward and looked over at Iska, "Our first priority is to push out the Germans. We need to secure this town so we don't have hostiles attacking our supply caravans." He paused for a second, "Oh, and if you find any civilians, make sure they're safe. I don't want any problems, because remember... we're the good guys."

Mike felt the vehicle come to a stop, only 5 miles outside of the city.

Nathan

"I know it seems weird for me to have medical supplies but I've been on quite a few solo missions so the morphine has been a precaution. And ever since the battle for hong kong I know a little plasma can go a long way." Nathan stands and readies himself looking at Mike for guidance. "So whats the game plan I take it were not just gonna drive down the center of the street?"

For much of the night Ailis sat beside Duncans bed watching him toss and turn as he slept. Finally as the sun crested the roof of the house next door, a crash was heard from upstairs followed by a curse. "Jesus fucking Mary and Joseph!" A second crash was heard immediately after the curse as Duncan hurled the metal pitcher that had been full of hot water against the wall. A few minutes later he made his way down the stairs and walked behind the bar and removed a bottle of whiskey from the shelf. Grabbing a glass from the bar, he walked over to a table in the back and opened the bottle. He filled the glass till it was nearly full then put the bottle to his lips and tipped it back.

Across the bar the old parish priest shook his head as he sat with Ailis and her father Jules. "The Irishman is always like this?"

"No Father, he returned alone last night covered in blood and reeking of smoke and petrol. Today the Nazi pigs are out in force, going from house to house looking for resistance fighters and word has it that there was an explosion at the fuel depot just outside of town."

The priest sighed softly, "Too much death has come from that son of Satan and his minions. Have you heard Jules, they are even plundering convents and monasteries and they have killed many of the monks including two who were my friends. I think that if God hasn't already then he will soon turn his face away from Germany." The priest paused for a moment to finish the last of his coffee before continuing as he stood up. "Should the Irishman need it, I will be taking confession all day and assure him that I will light candles and say a prayer for his friends tonight."

Ailis smiled at that and told him the names of Duncan's friends so that he could pray for them, then she looked over at him and seeing that his bottle was nearly empty went to the bar to get him a second bottle. Sitting down beside him she passed him the full bottle of whiskey and was surprised to see tears in his eyes as he opened the second bottle.

"I lost them all lass... every one of the friends that I came over hear with are dead by Nazi hands..." He drank the glass of whiskey without so much as a grimace before he continued. "Those Nazi bastards will pay in blood for killing my friends, they survive the bloody rule of the Brits and then come over here and are murdered by the Nazis."

Raphael Gurber

They got from the truck, a few words from Iska and Raphael was handed a magazine for his Luger and a Mosin-Nagant 1891 with two magazines.

"Better point those the right way German, if you want to keep living."

Raphael nodded his understanding, loading the rifle, slinging it over his shoulder, slipping the extra magazine into his pocket and drawing his Luger and loading it with the magazine provided, all under the watchful eye of two Russians and a handful of the American soldiers. He cocked the pistol, slid it back into it's holster and then slipped the rifle from his shoulder and stood there calm and relaxed, waiting for their orders.

Salima Mimoun

Salima was the last to climb out of the truck, handing her suitcases out. Now she even felt stranger and more misplaced as in the truck, as she saw the soldiers assembling in their militaric routine. Was she supposed to stand by them? Should she imitate their movements and their drill? No, this would just be ridiculous. So she kept standing in the way she usually did; like a elegant lady from a good family with some background as actress.

Mike Adams

The group of American soldiers gathered around Mike (not in any military formation or as a drill practice all of which only happened in training) as he began to address them. "Ok, so we need to scout out a safe area to enter the town from. The Germans are probably holed up in several building near the center which means they'll have cover. Once we enter, we need to eliminate any hostiles and secure all major bridges and roadways."

Nathan Thomas

Nathan helped Salima with her suitcase with a smile and stood by her looking to Mike. "I can scout out a quiet way into the city I've done my fair share of scouting missions." Nathan pulled out a rimfire cartridge from his side pocket and slid it into his Lee Enfield. He felt a bit out of place as the only Canadian and could see that Salima probably felt the same. "Oh and sir might I advise that another volenteer join me, two heads are better than one after all." Nathan admired the way Salima composed herself even in such a place like this. He was kind of concerned for her he knew she had her uses but they deminished in battle witch was sure to come. Nathan crouches down and pulls off his ankle holster with his browning 9mm and holds it out to her. "I would feel much better if you would take this maam."

Salima Mimoun

"Thank you. I fear I am no big use if it comes to a battle." she smiled and took the gun. She could wear it below her furcoat where it was hidden well, even for it size. Salima stood beside the canadian and turned to Mike.
"What am I supposed to do?"

Mike Adams

Mike turned to Nathan, "I send Richard with you." Mike motioned towards Richard, "He's good at following orders and loves to snipe hostiles."

Sighing Mike looked over at Salima, "Well first, you'll have to get rid of your suitcase. You can't take it with you on mission. It's unnecessary luggage and will only attach attention, like your fur coat." Mike turned to face William, "Find a suit for Ms. Salima."

Salima Mimoun

Salima turned a bit pale. She knew she had to follow the orders, but the suitcase with clothes was the only thing she had left.
"You mean, We cannot deposit our things somewhere?"

Iska

Disgarding the used butt of her last cigarette, for a while, due to its attention attracting properties, Iska picked the first of Salima's suitcases and threw it back into the truck. It settled somewhere near the back, far enough from the edge not to fall out. "The truck can take it back to the American camp. You could collect it if we survive. Captain, your personnel back there can hold it awhile, surely?"

Iska followed a similar method of checking her rifle and sidearm. But went a step further and checked her grenades, the 'safe' explosive blocks in her bag and that both the combat knife at her hip, and the small blade wedged into her right boot was secure.

"We can cover your approach from higher buildings nearer to the center of the town, if you would like an escape plan in case something goes wrong in there. But the infantry would do well set back further on the edge of town for quick reinforcement."

Nathan Thomas

Nathan looks to Richard and motions for him to follow him as he starts walking towards higher ground in the south. Then stopping he looks to Iska pausing to remember his german. "Thats a great idea you should secure one of the taller buildings while me and Richard here scout your path from the trees atop the hill just south of town." Looking now at Mike Nathan continues. Might I also suggest we go in quiet at first wait untill we can get men at vantage points." He says while motioning his hands to Iska and Raphael. "I'm just putting this out there but I think that once men are in position near the center of town and me and Richard have good scopes." He pauses to collect his words. "Then I could signal Iska and whom ever else is a good shot to open fire then as the jerries are dealing with the sudden sniper fire you lead the main force in behind them. Me and Richard can cover your six on your approach to the town." Then Nathan notices he wasn't in any position to tell anyone what they should do let alone the man he was supposed to take orders from. "Just my thoughts I'm sure whatever you decide will be fine."

Salima Minoum

Salima was somehow relieved that her possesions would be safe at the camp. She took of her valuable furcoat and got into the truck and stuffed it into the suitcase, then she climbed out back again. She was shivering in her dress without coat and waited or the things to come.

Raphael Gurber

He looked around him and shook his head, he however kept his mouth closed, he was in no position to say anything unless he was asked. He had to admit that he liked Iska, she was a tough no-nonsense type of woman, direct and a leader. He shifted into a better position and scanned the other soldiers, they were ready for the assault, he just hoped that they were good shots as they had limited ammunition and his former compatriots had a lot of weaponry.

Mike Adams

Turning around, Mike gazed over at Cherbourg. From the outside, the place seemed all quiet and calm, but Mike knew that he couldn't let something like that put his guard down.

Once William had returned, finding a suit for Salima and handing it to her, he walked over to Mike. "So I suspect we continue with the objective plan that the general gave us?"

Mike nodded, "Yes, I'm sure Arrow Company is on the west side of Cherbourg and our air support has done some surveillance of the air so we had a good idea of where the major intersections and bridges are. See if Ground Company is nearby."

William saluted and headed off as Mike look at Cherbourg. The main entrance, through which they'd be entering, was a large road. Mike hoped that there were no snipers waiting to pick off some Americans, and if the Germans had armor with them, then this mission would only be more difficult.

Salima Mimoun

Salima found it impossible to put the suit over her dress, so she hid behind the truck and stripped it off, and put on the army suit, then she put her dress into the suitcase in the truck. She imagined that she would look probably quite silly in an army suit. William had simply chosen the smallest suit he could find, and it did fit in length, but was a bit to wide at the legs, arms and waist, but a bit to tight on her bottom and breasts. He had brought her a helmet along, that would have been to big, but was held up by her hair. She decided to keep close behind Nathan, as the others had called him. Maybe she would be shot dead in the next minutes anyway, but she could do nothing to prevent it.

Nathan looked back on the group as he and Richard got to a treeline atop the hill to the south of the road. Salima had come with them the cover of the trees offering a safer route for someone with little to no combat experience. The group was moving down the road slowly and carefully Mike had his men well placed. Nathan checked the direction of the town then set off in a direction just to the side leading into the trees. This way he and Richard could cover Mike and his men for a couple miles before heading deeper into the woods towards the ridge over looking the town.

Richard followed close behind and just as Nathan was about to make small talk he caught a glint of light in the distance. Nathan dropped down and put his scope to his face and pointed in the direction of the light. About a quarter mile down the road from Mike Nathan made out a light machine gun nest that had reflected the suns light. It was stationed on a small hill overlooking the road. It was far enough on the opposite side of the hill that anyone coming down the road wouldn't see it until they were in it's sights. Scanning the area Nathan made out three German's, two under the makeshift wall the gun stood on and the third sitting behind his legs hanging over a small trench. "Ok Richard time to see how well you can use that rifle of yours." Richard had just gotten the Germans in his scope but his thumbs up told Nathan he was ready for what was to come.

Nathan motioned for Salima to find some cover and put his eye back to his scope. "Ok theres no telling how many could be under cover in the trench so we need to drop these three as quick as possible. No matter what we can't let them get to the machine gun. You take the one on the gun I'll get the other two, don't fire until after my first shot." Richard nods as they both take aim. Nathan was in luck the German sitting had just stood up and walked towards one of the others with something small in his hands. Focusing his lens Nathan waits until both men are just feet from one another. Opening then closing the breech and cocking a round Nathan takes a breath and then on a slow exhale he squeezes the trigger. Just under two seconds after squeezing the trigger Nathan saw his first target drop the deafening bang from his rifle echos down the hill. Just before the German hit the ground with a bullet in his head a second shot from Richard hit the German at the gun in the chest. Nathan already had his next shot cocked as the second german went down. The third german managed to get down and started scanning the tree line. Not far enough down though as Nathan's next shot hit just above his temple splattering the contents of his head across the dirt.

Nathan cocked his next shot and scanned the area around the trench. Sure to his prediction a large group of jerries popped thier heads up at the same time. Nathan put his hand on Richards shoulder before he fired. "Whats wrong?"Richard asks confused. "They all got up at once thats whats wrong, and look," Nathan replies pointing back at the hill all the jerries had gotten back down in the trench. "Whats wrong with you we could have taken out at least three!" Richard yells. "The last time I saw an entire troupe of men stand up at the same time right after hostile sniper fire was when they were ordered by someone who also had snipers in position. We had the element of surprise with thoughs three but now I suspect theres unseen scopes searching for us right now."Nathan stopped talking and started crawling in the direction of the trees and the bush he told Salima to hide behind. "This is going to take much more snipeing don't you worry."

Nathan knew that the enemy snipers had probably seen Mike and his men by now. The only thing stopping them from fireing was knowing that Nathan and Richard were watching for them now. "We know two things theres at least nine jerries down there that Mike and his men are about to find, and there are an unknown number of snipers who are not about to let us take three more of there own. It's a tough decesion but we have to wait for them to take the first shot." Nathan looked back and saw a look of concern on Richards face. "Don't worry it our job to make sure they get off as few shots as possible Mike and his team can handle anything down on the road."

Salima Mimoun

Salima did excactly as she was told and kept close to the ground. She knew she wasn't muchg use in shooting, so at least she didn't want to be a burden.

Raphael Gurber

As the three shots rang out, he knew that they were in trouble, Hauptmann Kleize was a shrewd operator. He cleared his throat to catch Mike's attention,

"Captain I would strongly recommend us finding cover, I fear that with those shots fired every and any sniper available will start looking for targets."

Mike Adams

Mike heard the gunshots and sighed, nothing could go smoothly and now their arrival was now known to the Germans. He turned to Raphael, "Correct, being picked off by snipers isn't on my agenda today."

Mike turned around and started giving orders to his troops, telling them to find cover in the nearby, building that looked like a hotel of some kind.

With his original unit, plus in foreign allies, and the troops that General Conner gave him, he had about 17 soldiers under his command. His group could probably get around and deal with the snipers, but not an alert battalion of German soldiers.

Hoping that luck was on their side, Mike picked up his gear and headed off to cover.

Salima Mimoun

Salima kept down all the time, alert to follow any orders that the men around her would give. Although she really was frightened, she managed to stay very calm.
