Decker had been on his own for awhile now and taking in a roommate was not what he wanted to do, but do it he must. He spent most of his time writing, for himself it seemed, as nothing was being picked up by any of his sources. Not the Reader or even the local rag that posted every odd, filler you could imagine. He’d even tried a few erotic short stories, but the pay was negligible and his editor told him to make a choice, because his name was being dragged through some unsavory circles. Circles that might preclude him from getting back to writing the features or even a local column.

It had been a few days since he had posted his name and number, screened a few people and invited only three to his address for a face to face. He had a great location, just near Santa Barbara College, but he doubted he would find any students interested in his living arrangement. The first had already come and gone, not much of a connection. Peter, had a part time job and everything about him told Decker that there was no way the guy would pay rent on time, or at all…

He had two more to see later today, but he hoped that someone would surface soon, there was no way he could make ends meet anymore without some help. And he needed it fast. The phone rang twice before he picked it up, sure that one of the two remaining tenant prospects were going to cancel.
