Has anyone here written or read stories where the story is recited from the perspective of a dominant man, and doesn’t come off like a total caricature?

Most of the “dominant” guys I find in fiction just come off as total assholes, which is fine for a quick wank, but too cartoonish. I’m looking for inspiration in getting into a dominant mindset, preferably written by an actual dom male (in the bdsm sense).

The "Den of Iniquity" series by Sir Nathan is an interesting, long, character-driven story series about a man who doesn't initially seem at all like a dominant but gets drawn into the lifestyle and finds himself enjoying the role of dominant. It's in the first person, so we get the emerging dominant's point of view the whole time. Most of this author's stories are BDSM stories, from different points of view.

I'd be curious to read such stories. We've talked elsewhere recently about "getting in the head of the MC." I can't get into the head of a dominant (male or female). I'd like to understand the impulse better at the erotic level.

It's not a single impulse. There are a lot of different motivations and not all of them are admirable.

I don’t think “admirable” is necessarily what I want. More like, just understanding what makes a dom “tick” in a believable way.

An inexplicable urge to control, misogyny, convenience, low-self-esteem, an unhealthy/unbalanced expression of desire, a need to be trusted... take your pick. You could go over to the BDSM forum and ask them directly.

In the stories I write it's usually the unbalanced expression of desire. Because the stories I write are fantasies the characters make their relationship work when, in the real world, it would almost certainly be very unhealthy and ultimately self-destructive.

I'm also fond of exploring the power dynamics. For example, if it's being done correctly, the dominant has to be very, very attentive to what the submissive is and isn't saying, how it's being said, and how they are reacting. The dominant needs to know what the submissive wants and doesn't want from the experience and they have to carefully prepare to deliver those experiences. The submissive ultimately holds all the power.

The favorite of my stories is The Black Hart which is a light bodice-ripper with a predictable twist.

Your story seems to be told from the female POV, but your bio addresses the issue in the thread quite well.

I would say my bio says that I'm strongly attracted to strong, intelligent women who want to engage in submissive roleplay and I treasure their courage and trust. But I'm probably fooling myself.

I write a soft, caring dom, who with his coterie's assistance has created a "torture chamber" that on the surface seems menacing, but the sign over the entrance is "Nobody Gets Hurt... Much." The play is fun, erotic, loving, and satisfying. There is frequent role-swapping, where the ladies become the domme to his willing subservience (which in "reality" is only for the chamber play. He's still "the boss").

It just occurred to me I haven't published this part of the series, which has been mostly done for quite a while. Should dust it off and upload.

I've got a story cycle which I regard as bdsm, low key power dynamics, mostly.

This intro explains the background: The Floating World - Madelyn which then links to the full story cycle. It's essentially a WIWAW background note which is, curiously, my hottest rated piece at 4.94. Odd.

I put the original series in Group, because it had three characters, but Group is a backwater category so I got very little feedback. I then thought, well, it's sorta-kinda bdsm (but not BDSM), so I wrote the intro. BDSM is also very non-responsive as a category, so I still don't know what any extra audience thought.

Four out five chapters scored quite high (4.61, 4.72, 4.82, 4.88), but one noticeably doesn't (4.45) - I have no idea what that chapter did that upset readers. Something, obviously, but I have no idea what

I'm not a dominant male (very far from it) and neither is my MC even though he's the one who wields the paddle in the relationship, but if you want different approaches you could check out...

1) A White Valentine's - focusing on how much hard work a really good session is. (Warning: mild watersports in this one - either that or the 'doing some work' caused it to score low).

2) Strictly Obedient - a series of jokes based on over serious doms and real-life intruding into a session.

3) Roped into a Fantasy - a story about getting into tying someone up without the usual BDSM trappings.
