Posh is an acronym it stands for "Port Out Starboard Home" and it come's from the days of great cruising ship's, the rich would have a cabin on the Port side when leaving Britain and would have a Starboard side cabin when they came back.

fancy shmancy! :p

American "hey want a Bud"

Brit "no thank's I'd rather have a beer"

Americans= panties
Brits= knickers

americans=pants
brits=trousers

USA/UK= Panties (female)

UK= Pants (male)

Panties tend to be what we call smaller underwear and Knickers are what your granny wears.......if she'a really old they call them "bloomer's" which is also the name of a type of bread, so you could go into a bakers and ask with a perfectly straight face for a large bloomer.......and you could even ask for one with poppy seed's on it too !!

i say "tuck her up" when putting my daughter to bed... but my husband says "tuck her in"... we are both canadian :)

my mother says 'goom' for gum also, but she's from that crazy east coast lol... (she also says eight like 'ay-at' and wash as 'warsh'... and that's when she's not cursing in french! go figure!)

one thing i've noticed about my american friends is this: rec room for me is rumpus room for them... maybe i've just got wierd friends lol.

another is verandah vs. porch. couch vs. sofa. lunch vs. dinner, and dinner vs. supper

credenza vs. night table.

language is fascinating, eh?

... oh and another Brit expression for bum is fanny ...

but in Canada we use the expression "fanny packs" ... for those little purse thingies that are attached to a belt ... do other countries use that too?

oh yes ... now i remember ....

one of our Brit posters pointed that out in a thread once before ...

it is opposite from what we consider "fanny" here ...

now that is bizarre ... don't you think? lol ... no seriously ...

I have no idea where it comes from but you can imagine the kind of laugh American shows get when someone say's something like "I fell on my fanny" or when old film's and books like "Fanny by gaslight" or "Fanny hill" get a mention any time. :D

Now I've heard this but I don't know if it's true ....

Americans say "Get the Hoover and vacumn up that mess!"

The British say "Get the vacumn and Hoover up that mess!"

:confused: :confused: :confused: :confused: :confused:

yep in fact my mum used to call any vacuum cleaner a hoover (that being the best known make in the UK) and would hoover the house clean, in fact a lot of people say thing's like "I just hoovered the house" rather than "I just vacuumed the house" and people who eat fast sometimes get accused of "hoovering up" their meal.

"Christ you hoovered up that dinner fast you greedy pig"

As for "goom", I'm from the East Coast, no one here says that. And this "crik" nonsense, well, people here do say that, but there's another word for them too.
