young is wrong or not?

media insult

Why not? The media insults me every day.

Actually, I make my bread as a copy editor. But, I am still obliged to bite the hand and all that.

The motto of every television news operation should be "If it happened here, it's news to us".

the wonderful thing about insults directed at "the media" is that, invariably, they lump us all together into one giant monolithic institution, with one mind. That is so completely laughable. A newsroom full of journalists can barely conspire to get the paper out every day.

That's an old joke but there is still plenty of truth to it. There just is no one mind pulling the strings. See it from the inside and you will see how laughable such interpretations are.

axel, if you're a copy editor, why do you make blanket statements about "the media." Surely you must know how absurd it is to suggest we all have one mind.

derivative media

I wasn't suggesting some vast conspiracy. Didn't work for Hilary, won't work now.

I edit news stories all day long. Then I turn on TV news. What I get is advice to drink water in the summer time. And each station seems dumber than the last.

Too many times, I've seen young, idealistic reporters beaten into the mold of "same old, same old".

And I do think media culture is homogenizing and repetitive. If you see a regional difference where you live, good on you.

OK, now here's valid criticism. Personally, i don't even consider local TV broadcasts news anymore. CNN qualifies, barely, if only because they do have the capability to bring you breaking news immediately, with some quality.

I agree that many aspects of media culture homogenizing and repetitive. I do not think that newspapers all necessary fall into that trap. The one i work for is as good as the people involved in each individual story. We have some veterans who are still quite vibrant and some young reporters/editors who are perfectly happy to paint by the numbers.

Basically, the trappings of plain vanilla journalism are all there but newspapers, good ones anyway, do break out of them sometimes because they have to reinvent themselves every day.

axel, one other thing

in the first line of my reply to your last post, i was refering to your criticism, not mine.

Personally i think its kind of sick to enjoy the fact of young children having sex.. For those who do enjoy this please think of these three things before you read another kiddy porno or movie...

1)Remember how it was during your childhood. How you felt. The things you cared about, like nintendo, gi-joe,castlevania, barbie, thunder cats.

2)If you have kids think of them. If you dont think of friends ( ect.) kid

3)Now try and put sex into all of that and realise just how stupid it is and pointless it is to a child. Thay have plenty of time to worry about sex when thay are older why spoile it for them now? Let them play with there toys & games since your only young once.

i agree! pre-pub are not capable of enjoying let alone understanding sex.
however once you reach puberty look out. for boys anyway it's in about every thought that you have and although i didn't get to do it much(not with other people anyway) i wanted too.

Haven’t we all agreed that this is a no way no how story line in countless other threads ?

Yes.

See the thread Okay, this is NOT an "idea" for a story, but... for a definitive statement from Tiggs (quoting Laurel) on what goes.

Well, age is relative. Just looking at a lot of car Magazines from Europe (MaxPower in particular), there's a lot of 16 year olds flashin' boobies and stuff. Technically, that's child porn, but they still sell them in the Barnes and Nobles out here in Cali. And Cali tends to be one of the strictest states when it comes to statuatory rape and kiddie porn.
Plus, in most states, the age of consent is 16, not 18, although a lot of states are beginning to follow suite with California on the age issue.
In anycase, I don't see a problem with making the story age limit 16, with a disclaimer mentioning to check with local laws in YOUR area about what is and is not legal.
But I also understand where Lit.com is coming from, and that they don't want to be viewed as pedofiles, but simply a place where people can convene to express their views and love for sex, and sexual escades.
I guess, in conclusion, I'm indifferent... but no younger than 16, because, you're right. Under that age, you do not understand the impact of sex/foreplay as you do when you're older.

Okay, you're kidding me, right? Can we drop this now? It's 18, it's not going to be 16, or 14, or 8. Let's just move on with our lives, okay?

So...over there in California, can you BUY porn at 16? I think not. Nor can you buy a pack of cigarettes, a lottery ticket or a beer (though that is 21 these days). That says a lot to me...

Amen !

Doesn't matter. Lit is in Laurel's god damn pocket, for all it matters.

You guys are kind of like a bunch of rebellious kids who like to argue just for the sake of arguing.

:(

Linnet's comment

I think that Linnet's comment was in response to the comment about magazines with 16 yr olds in them being kiddie porn. My ex boyfriend loved U.K. car magazines, so I know what Turboman was talking about. It's not kiddie porn, those nude pics, because they're of legal age.

Legal, but in the UK. Not legal over here, yet it's allowed on the shelves anywaz. 16 is NOT legal for postin' boobies and coochies... and that's what's on the shelves, in "18 year old only America".

And I was not arguing... just giving my $0.02. Sorry for upsetting anyone... just stating a fact.
