🎡 Monthly Song Challenge 🎡

πŸ’˜ πŸ’˜ πŸ’˜ πŸ’˜ πŸ’˜
I pray you get the opportunity one day, to find out more about yourself. Guilt free, of course.
Truly, I do πŸ’˜
Also, her voice is a crystal! A bit of country twang in there? I'm no good with american accents but it feels country-y.

Day 7: A song that mentions the ocean

Speaking of wonderful voices; Eric Adams has that, that thing which I can't put my finger on. His high notes are effortless. It's one thing to hit that Mariah-esque range, but it's a whole different party to do so without straining. He always sounds like there's more to give. Like there's "room" above what he shows us.

He took one single vocal lesson in his life. Corrected his breathing technique. Rest is self taught. How some people can arrive at this level of mastery without guidance is a mystery to me...

Manowar - Fight for Freedom

Very cool.
It's silly to try pulling one or two individual lines out of your posts, because they are brilliant in their entirety...
But I really, really like this observation: "Like there's 'room' above what he shows us."
Damn, I really enjoy that insight... as well as the unique talent in whose direction you pointed us. Thank you!

(I like what you wrote before your song recommendation, too. Beautiful. Great post.)

Day 6: A song that mentions the time of day

The song is about a girl’s first time crossing the romantic line with another girl. The timid, youthful, sweet lyrics give me nostalgia for something I never experienced.

I was in my late 20s, and married to a man, when I finally admitted to myself that I’m bisexual. There’s a part of me that looks back and wonders what that experience would have been like.

The artist, Olive Klug, has a voice that I just adore. I first discovered them on TikTok singing a Joni Mitchell cover, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

β€œI can't remember which party we danced through that night
The boys ask stupid questions
We just laugh at the secret we can't hide
For the first time Cinderella's staying out past midnight
Your lips press soft against my shoulder
It's not forever
It's just a moment we can smile at when we're older
”

Olive Klug - Not Forever After

Thank you for your honesty, your vulnerability, and your transparency. That trust is a powerful thing. You are who you are. And that is a changing, and fluid thing. I hope for you (and for all of us), to fully come to understand yourself in a safe and healthy way. I hope that very much for you.

As for the song, I didn't remember their name, but I thought I recognized their voice, especially after listening to a few songs. I saw them play at Artichoke, a music store that has a small performing space here in Portland some years ago-- they have improved, but their voice was just as sweet back then. I just checked their website, and they are playing there next month for three days of residency! I may get tickets for it. Thank you for reminding me of them. This is part of why I love this thread.

Edit to add: Portland artists continue to represent in The Challenge!

I saw them on multiple occasions. Always an amazing show. You definitely didn’t expect them to perform this song
Right I'll go look for something else then. Tsk.

Great choice πŸ‘Œ

Day 7: A song that mentions the ocean

I love the ocean. That is probably too tame a statement. The coast is where my soul lives. I learned this love at my mother's knee, and I have continued with it all my life. The beauty, the power, the danger, the mystery, the bounty, the magic, the joy. I tried living in a land-locked state and just couldn't do it -- I didn't last six months. I have walked in the ocean, played, swam, boated across it -- all wonderful. But learning to surf was a revelation. It was terrifying and joyful and spiritual -- everything religion was supposed to be. If God exists, They are a surfer.

When you surf, you need to get out past the breakers. Around, over, or through them. It is work, and it is hard, and sometimes a bit daunting. But when you get out there, past the roar and the roll, you wait. There is peace, utter peace. You wait your turn, because civility is important, and this is fucking Santa Cruz, not Malibu. And you wait for the wave. Your wave. When I was new at it, I spent more time waiting than surfing. (I never got past being vaguely adequate as a surfer, to be honest) And being on the water, in the water, I spent a lot of time looking back, not at the beach but at the horizon where the ocean and sky come together. Air and water, opposites meeting forever.

"Did you listen to your mother?
Did she show you how to be?
Can she stand across the water?
Can she calm the stormy seas?
Have you ever crossed your borders?
Where the ocean meets the sky
Now and then, and in the evening
Is where a man might go to die."

Kingfishr is an Irish group. I don't know if they surf, though I rather doubt it. But they understand that the lines between one thing and another --sky and sea, fire and water, living and dying, loving and not anymore-- aren't as separate as we like to think.

"Heart In the Water," Kingfishr.

I love your statement. It oozes your love with every letter.

That's beautiful 😍

Day 7: A song that mentions the ocean

I had this one locked-and-loaded, and was just trying to think of what I wanted to write...
But what am I even supposed to say after another one of UnquietDreams' poetic posts on the same topic?
So I will just ride on the coattails of his excellent posts! (Thank you! Brilliant.) And here we go...

Pearl Jam - Amongst the Waves

Day 7: A song that mentions the ocean

Toad The Wet Sprocket - Walk On The Ocean
I remember seeing this band name years ago... on a trip around the southern states. Never saw them though. This is such a lovely song and pops in my head a lot and has that feel of summer evening when everything seems possible... only to realise it's all words and they fade with the dawn... like life really, fake and hollow.

This was my first pick. I love this band so much!!
Looked through the other posts and @LeBaronSamedi inspired me to choose this instead. If you can get through his Prince wannabee / El deBarge vibe, this is such a beautiful song about the French islands. Just close your eyes and listen. 🌊🐠🌴

I'm glad I could be of help. This song is hard to crack. The look and the cheesy 80s arrangement... But at the core it's lovely. Maybe there should be a a version just with piano backing.
