As close to a rant as I get

Etoile - i agree with the observation made, and think i may have to jump on the fan band wagon as well. i am member in another group and posted, just this week, as to why is it that some cannot seem to share intelligent discussion (even if it is opposing pov's) without letting their emotions get embroiled in the mix. Some of the best discussions i have had, and learned from, have been with someone that did not share the same pov as me.
Why thank you!

I had something related to this happen recently. In a thread about someone who had been attacked while walking near his home dressed as a woman, somebody suggested that he should have expected it given how most people don't like transvestites. I was utterly stunned, but I responded by comparing it to the "if a woman wears a short skirt, she's asking to get raped" theory and even to the old "colored people deserve to be lynched if they're in white neighborhoods" attitudes before the civil rights movement. The woman who made the original statement responded fairly intelligently, and I replied again. We were having a perfectly normal debate between two intelligent people with differing views...but many of my friends (who think as I do) saw what was happening and jumped all over the woman. The moderator ended up closing the thread, which I felt was unfortunate. It's too bad we couldn't have just had our intelligent conversation.

Did I miss a meeting? Is there a rulebook somewhere
Ohhh...thats where you went wrong!! You were not at the last Twue Switchy Switchy meeting. They handed out the manuals. *grins* Ok, seriously...

I think that its like any other "community"(in sociological terms) I belong to the dance "community", and some occult communities as well. Any time there is more than a few people gathered on one topic, there is going to be a difference of opinion, and some are going to be more vocal. It is for us to choose whether to engage these members. When a person comes in and says "None of you are real (fill in the term) because you dont do it this way" teh chances of reeducating them are slim to none. There are those of us that like to play with them, lol (Commonly known as 'feeding the trolls') and thats okay too. Or in my case, I have been known to pat them on the cheek and call them cute. LOL There is no reason we cant have a little fun with small minded people ;)

Anyway, my point is that in any community there are going to be people we dont like, dont need, cant possibly stand. However, it is also up to us as an audience to allow them to get to us.

In my experience strong, intelligent, debate without getting nasty and personal is much more common in BDSM circles than otherwise. Intolerence breeds tolerence or maybe it is to prove intellectual dominance, who knows; whatever the reason the general quality of discussion in D/s groups is far better, in my experience than elsewhere.(generally, not to say it as a rule)

I read an article once about two people involved in some ageplay in a park, the gist of it was people stared at them and thought them odd, the woman dressed like a lil girl was looked on as foolish. People, as they often do judged them and formed opinions. They missed the point entirely, imagine loving and trusting someone so much, having so close a relationship that they were able to carry on like this not giving a hoot what anyone thought, just pleasing the other person in such a way. That is something most people will never understand. It was a great article, I wish I remembered where I read it.

Bit off topic...did you see the scenario which highlighted the stupidity of such commonly held beliefs I read while studying SW and posted a close recreation of in Marquis' thread? It is sad some people, more than we think actually, still buy into these limited views...and it was sad your thread was moderated, I agree...another instance of how something is often other than perceived through the PC screen.

I missed that! I will try looking for it - do you recommend any particular search terms?
