Ask the Mouse your lingerie questions...

I read some of the reviews of The Lingerie Handbook. This one made me ram my head against the wall in despair:

A well chosen bra, panty makes garments fit better, look nicer on us. Now, this book covers how to choose the right fitting undergarments, what you have to watch out for when buying, mentions the many kinds of lingerie you can ever come accross and how to use them.

For instance, there are full slips and half slips which I've heard of and remember my grandma' used to use but it has never occurred to me that I could use it too. I just thought it's for old ladies. Well, it isn't. As it turns out, full slips are for under see-through and/or clinging, static dresses.

Really? REALLY?

I'm hardly what anyone would call a fashionista or a particularly cultured or feminine individual, but even my redneck ass knows what a fucking slip is for. I even have a couple...somewhere.

LOL! It also talks about using minimizers, a no-no as far as CM is concerned. Still, some good info.

You own a slip! Damn, I'm impressed. I don't think I've had one since I was about 12.

I remember trying to FIND one for one of my daughters a few years back. NO luck. On the other hand, they don't sell heels as near as I can tell for a 100 mile radius. We ended up having to just get her a different Sunday go to meetin' dress.

A full one and a half one, if you can believe it. I'm about 99.9999% certain it's because I had to have something to wear under the dress I wore to my cousin's wedding, or else I wouldn't have one at all. :p

They can be hard to find. I'm pretty sure mine came from, like, Walmart or something because I DGAF. ;)

CM, while I know it's not the best way, I did a quick self measurement just to help me browse potential stores online. I so do not understand bra sizing. I usually measure myself a few times and take an average to help offset the error that comes with doing it myself. I found that with only a variation of ONE CENTIMETRE in band size, I'd be 14C or 16A. wtf?!?! I know the cup size adjusts with band size, but that seems a bit of a jump for one centimetre.

so...I don't really know what my question is, but this just makes no logical sense to me at all. xD

Mea culpa; I just now saw this... that's what I get for working so much lately?

That does seem like a pretty significant jump. I'd have expected the breakdown to be a 14C or 16B. Maybe the jump is because you're right on the edge of one size or the other, and the 1cm was just enough to push things one direction or the other? I have had fittings where I just threw up my hands and said "outside the box time!" and what fit best was something totally unexpected, that I would have sworn would never ever ever work in a million years.

Slips are insanely difficult to find anymore, which is one of the reasons I started collecting vintage slips. ;)

GOOD slips are even harder to find, but my favorite for years is made by Commando. They come in multiple lengths (full) or half slips, and I love them. Worth every penny, IMO.

I love that the "life ensured bra" is "life ensured" for one year.

(Ohhh the stories I could tell of people who expect lingerie to last forever... lol)

Own some things like this. LOVE things like this. I find them comfortable, non-lump creating, and altogether great. I'm convinced a lot of the bra-burning bonfires that these must have fueled were more symbolic than actually about the comfort of free-swinging girls. (ow)

Nah, the bird has a message tied to its leg that will activate the sleeper assassins.

Stockings.

I don’t wear pantyhose but I’ve always been attracted to thigh high stockings, the kind with fancy, sexy patterns. The problem is they won’t stay up. I end up hiking them surreptitiously when I hope no one is looking. Not sexy. :(

I’ve wondered if it could be a fit issue. I’m moderately tall (5’7”), but long limbed. The book says they should hit mid thigh and mine don’t quite. (Like most leggy people my thighs are long.) If I go to a larger size the stockings are baggy.

Any suggestions?

I have a copy of The Lingerie Handbook by Rebecca Apsan.

Still loving the book! The chapter on shapewear is illuminating. I’ve never worn such and have always though of such garments as…elderly. Possibly due to my grandmother, who use to lay hers out on the bed before dressing. They were all pointy cupped with weird strapping like some medieval torture device. Kinda creepy.

My view has changed. Some of the stuff pictured is quite hot. :)

Garter belt?

To my knowledge, thigh-highs don't stay up worth a shit on anyone. I'm tall myself (5'10"-ish), but I have ridiculously short legs for my height, and stockings still roll down like crazy on me.

But I'm sure CM can advise you better than I can. ;)

Yeah. Garter belts are such a pain, what with bathroom issues and garter lines. :(

You're probably right. Thigh highs probably just don't stay up, but I'm hoping CM will whip out some brilliant solution!

I once glued them to my thighs using clear nail polish. It I remember correctly it was somewhat effective though not exactly too sexy when I tried to take them off.

I wouldn't recommend it.

I'm oddly practical re: stockings (which, I love).

If I'm paranoid, I'll wear stockings with the thin silicone grippers (meant to stay up on their own) AND a garter belt.

Another alternative is sock garters - similar to traditional wedding garters (the kind you throw). Be careful on that website; it's addictive. ;)

Re: shapewear...

Lookie at La Perla's latest "slip"

Shape Allure

And the bodysuit from the same collection.

(And yes, I sold a slip today, so there really are people in the world who wear that stuff...)

You need long or "opera" - and you'll only get those if you go for fully fashioned, which have their own quirks. BUT - good enough garters will work well on them.

Thigh high, in my experience, as both a curvy outsize girl and a skinny small one - are more or less a joke for actual wear in the world, grippy things or no.

Which explains why I always wear my stockings longer than they look in pictures. Otherwise, they never hit the right spot. I don't have to go so far as to buy fully fashioned, but I do find better luck with higher price points.

Maybe there is something wrong with my modesty levels...? I don't mind the occasional touch to the top of my thigh highs to readjust them, but I also don't have a huge problem with slippage. I.e., I might have to adjust them every 20 minutes or so, but I'm not hitting the dance floor with them, either... I don't buy anything special, just pick them up anywhere I see them. I do hand wash them and don't get soap on the sticky tops - wonder if that makes a difference?

I love this thread. Thank you, CutieMouse. A red bra under a white shirt!? Who knew?

*runs out to buy red bra* It's the little things. ;)

And... did you get your red bra by now?

(By the way, you are cute when you are upset.)
