Being a woman in geek culture

No it's new. It's like, ok, I was the less suited one, and now I'm the more suited one. Click. I went from "with man" mode into my usual "with woman" mode, plus some extra anxiety.

I want an internal dimmer switch too.

Excellent article. By the same logic, since the delusion of superiority exists only in an individual's head, the delusion of inferiority also exists for the same reasons and can be confronted in the same way.

Who really holds genuine power in a media streaming to an individual, the individual or the media? Do you as an American believe that you're destined to be obese, stupid, ignorant and rude, shop at WalMart and eat at McDonalds? That's out there too.

There's definitely power in reversing or at least crossing the streams of feedback. I don't live a beer commercial life. No, I'm not stereotypical and not only do I defy stereotypes, I deny the stereotype makers. I don't define myself by what someone else thinks of Americans or Geeks or Women.

They have power over you to the extent that you want their approval, their acceptance, and although that's hard to give up...it's a really good thing to do.

Agreed. Sort of. I don't think feelings that powerful can just be instantly "willed away". I see more of a long, slow change over time. Which is why we need feminism, because it ain't going to just "happen".
Let me put it another way;

In the context of the comment I was responding to, If game developers cannot 'will it away.' I cannot buy their product.

And I am well used to not buying product.

I have developed my own rule. If there's a preview for a movie...and nobody is allowed to talk and it's all escalating music, fast cuts and explosions...

It is probably not for me.

There might be exceptions but thankfully I haven't had to do in depth research.

Huh huh huh you said "research"

;)

Ooh, and I am also willing to watch the unpopular movies alone.

Gods, I miss my daughter. Best movie-watcher-buddy ever. She understands that to properly watch a movie, give a two-hour movie a five hour buffer to pause and discuss.

I had a friend who would not watch movies at my house. She said; "You guys talk it to death!"

Husband can't be in the room with us. He will pause and wait patiently, then pause and wait impatiently, then give us "the look" and we start to laugh.

But really, I just want to talk. My daughter and I watch the Olympics, or the Oscars and it takes two weeks extra or two nights. It's my preferred method, social watching.

It might break along gender lines, but it's also a personality thing. My sister's the same way. All in all my best movie watching experiences have been with women.

Sorry, I have to have a squee here.

Jeri Ryan just replied to my tweet!

*swoons*

ETA: Also... The Worldcon schedule is 246 pages???

The cultural norm of the geek being looked at like a bepimpled overweight douchebro that spouts homophobic slurs into his xbox mic is so ingrained into our psyche that I seriously doubt I'll live to see the day when that stereotype doesn't exist anymore.

So you would feel better with a stereotype that is still a stereotype, as long as the stereotype does also include women?

Geek culture won't evolve or get better cred from the outside world until the sexism stops.

Why does the geek culture get better with less sexism and why would it want better cred from the outside world?

Okay, this question might be too difficult to comprehend so I'll rewrite all this with BDSM terms:

"BDSM culture won't get better cred from the outside world until the whipping and flogging of women stops."

Why does the BDSM culture get better with less sadism and why would it want better cred from the outside world?

You know how they say there are no stupid questions?

Primalex just gave us two exceptions to the rule.

I tried to use the same argument, but in a different way.

I can't address the false equivalencies enough to make it coherent. Pass.

Yeah, the difference between flogging a masochistic woman in consensual play and insulting strangers for being female?

Might be something about that.

Sorry, I'm still used to people who don't mind to use their brain a few minutes and think about something. These days, anything that requires a higher attention span than deciphering a lolcat picture, is too much though. Especially for you.

No idea why, but I'll try to lead you step-by-step through the argument anyway.

1) What do uptight vanilla people, who view BDSM as something bad and scary and would prefer to outlaw it completely, have in their mind, when they think about BDSM in this context?

[ ] A couple that is cuddling in front of a fireplace.
[ ] Some guy inflicting pain on a woman. A woman crying. A woman bleeding. A woman tied up, being helpless to the torture of a man.

2) Assuming you picked the correct answer, then we can deduce that those uptight vanilla people would view the BDSM culture in a different way, if we would remove these activities from "our" culture. Plain and simple. This again would lead to a better cred from the outside world.

This was a lot of text again - can you still follow me and can I continue?

BDSM is something you do. Being a woman is something you are.

And being a douche is something you do.

BDSM is something you do. Being a woman is something you are.

You know that we are talking about BDSM culture and GEEK culture, right? As far as I can tell, women exist in both cultures, so if there is a completely pointless objection, it is that one.

And choosing to be in either BDSM or GEEK culture is a choice.

Whereas being a woman isn't.

I didn't see a real need to type that twice, but if it helps, good for you. If it doesn't...I'm terribly sorry.

False equivalency is a logical fallacy and you're soaking in it.

And?

You insist that my logic is wrong and deny me the option to explain it, yet you insist that you got it all right, because you figured out that I'm wrong.

So, what now?

a) I don't care. You are wrong. It is impossible that I didn't understand you properly.
b) Okay, I give you the benefit of the doubt that you are actually an intelligent being that doesn't come up with weird comparisons for a reason, so I will try to "listen".

Choose now. My time is limited and I don't need to waste it by writing down stuff if you don't care at all.

And I'm back to my original assessment. Pass.

Here's where I can demonstrate that insult can be given, and I don't have to accept it, and I don't really have to do much about it other than disengage.

I don't need to prove anything to you, and conversation with me isn't a right. It's not a privilege either, but that's another story.

Christ. It's like, the folks most gung-ho about talking about ethics here (you know, the kind of ethics that supports the status quo circlejerk of theirs) don't actually seem to know a thing about ethics?

Or they think that the rules of, say, basketball, are the rules for everything. And that, if the rules of ethical culture in general are not the same as the rules for basketball, then people hate basketball.

Or some fucking thing like that.
