The Rolling Stones. I love their entire catalog. For The Beatles, I didn't like them until they started doing some serious drugs. :)

Submiiiiiiiiisioooooooooon

To answer an earlier post, The Beatles are disqualified because they were a "pop" group? "Helter Skelter" aside, are you basing that on the fact that not every song in their discography is rooted in the blues? Does "Ruby Tuesday" disqualify the Rolling Stones? Were The Clash a reggae group? I cheerfully agree that, among the bands offered, The Beatles and The Stones have it pretty close to neck and neck, but the very breadth of recording styles, the perfection of the early rock single and the intense experimentation thereafter, the canny writing, and perfectionist instrumental technique (ok, George's perfectionist instrumental technique) seal it for the Lads. "Tomorrow Never Knows" all but makes the case by itself.

Also, I challenged myself to come up with ten British bands not included in the article/poll/whatevski that are equally deserving of the attention. Heres what I came up with:

1. The Clash - I'm rather surprised they weren't in the article to begin with. They probably belong at the number 3 spot, under the Beatles and Rolling Stones.
2. The Sex Pistols
3. The Who
4. The Yardbirds
5. Radiohead
6. Massive Attack
7. Joy Divison
8. The Smiths
9. Massive Attack
10. The Kinks

I didn't have room for other hugely influential bands like Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, The Who, Led Zepplin, New Order, Cream, and Fleetwood Mac, and The Zombies. Then there are the slightly less influential bands that are no less excellent: Pulp, Spacemen 3, Slowdive, King Crimson, Aphex Twin, Blur, Felt, and The Fall. And thats not including solo acts like David Bowie, Brian Eno, Jeff Beck, etc. So out of that entire grouping, could Queen or Oasis honestly claim even a top ten spot? I'm not saying they aren't a lot of fun and influential in their own right, but more so than The Yardbirds, or even The Smiths? More insistant than Joy Division or The Kinks? And cant we all agree that even Wings would top Take That? Was this poll started by SoundScan? Thats the only way I can figure to justify its obsession with sales as an auger of quality.

But thats was fun. Lets do it again with American bands.

One question for you...did you mean to list Massive Attack twice? ;)

Teardrop

Sweet, that means I can move Black Sabbath into the top ten. Also, not to be an ant in the arse, but The Beatles were doing serious drugs to help them play all-night shows in dive bars in Hamburg about two years before they recorded "Love Me Do." Maybe you start to like them after they suffered serious ennui and decided reinventing music was more interesting than mining the conventions of American and skiffle rock.

Theres no way Zeppelin are metal, hard rock maybe but never metal

Queen but only with Freddy Mercury, then The Who and The Beatles, after that the rest...The Stones are at the bottom as far as I'm concerned.
