I might not have had a wonderful childhood but one good thing I was taught was manners yeah it's that English politeness thing sadlly lacking these days and I know it makes me sound old but I would rather be of an era when manners and politemess to my fellow human beings mattered than of now when it's ok to curse and swear at whoever you feel like directing it at ........ all under the umbrella of freedom of speech. We have just had a court case here of muslim men yelling out at a parade of our young soldiers who had just returned home that they were rapists and child murderers. Justice was done.

Homburg, you're way too cool to continue with this silly self-deprecation as regards your writing. Just own it. You're good, and you have valuable things to say. You're so ballsy in everything else; why be scared to admit you've got some talent?

/amiablescolding/

Meh. If it was talent, it might be a skosh more accessible. As it is, I have incredibly rare spurts of competence that surface once every decade or so. It is annoying beyond comprehension.

Anyway, I'm pretty blasted right now. Hanging out in Emergency Rooms tends to do that to me.

I'm lucky enough to be able to speak my mind on most contexts, including on the job and in classes.

Not me. I have made a point of living and working with people who come from radically different cultures and/or hold opposing viewpoints with mine for so long, I am chronically couching my thoughts and opinions in language that will be deemed acceptable within the group. Once in a while I find myself voicing opinions that are not my own, in order to fit in, but usually I'm expressing my true views in tempered language. And I find I hold my tongue until I can suss out the median position.

I am comfortable freely speaking my mind with only a very few people. But I also find that I am listened to and put in leadership positions in most groups I participate in. I always thought it was helpful in the long run to be in a position to take action. But maybe it's because I'm saying what people want to hear.

We like hearing Keith Olbermann say those things about Pat Robertson and Rush Limbaugh, but he's preaching to the choir, isn't he?

Back in the late 80's, I went to a faith healing at Heritage USA - after Jim and Tammy Faye had been shamed and discredited. The animosity of the liberal press had done nothing to cool the fervor of the true believers. It was stunning to behold.

Having a good set of facts can be helpful, too.
Someone on another thread on this site was claiming that earthquakes have becoming more frequent recently, but I showed that statistics don't bear that out. More earthquakes are reported, due to increased monitoring, but the rate of significant earthquakes appears to be holding steady. There have been similar concerns over hurricanes in light of global warming and triggered by the severity of the 2006 season. Again, historical data has a limited span, as hurricane which don't make landfall can only be inferred from ships logs in the pre-satellite era.

It's foggy here, for about the fourth day in a row. My mind is similarly foggy.

I'm celebrating, with a certain abashed and rueful downplay, the fact that I finally finished my Dirty 30. Gods, what an ordeal. It helped though; I've got some nice raw material. And two collections are finished now too, and being sent off to the agent. I might have cool news about them eventually; it looks more likely than ever.

Fog. Like little cat feet. Makes one want to drink something hot and sweet and thick.

Now settle down. I was talking about cocoa.

Its starting to get warm here - not cocoa weather at the moment.
And congratulaions on getting your works sent out!

Is frazzled so its a choice between Hmmnmm's blankie or the backroom in here culminating with feet sticking out from under the piano .......

Well it does look like you have the run of the place.

I'm struggling to stay in a good mood today, but maybe a lil' dose of Annie will help me. I hope all is well, sweetness.

Wait a minute.

Homburg: emergency rooms? I was too foggy yesterday and that went under the radar. Hope everything is alright.

One of the kids brought home a stomach flue. In short order, it ate its' way through the kids, then viv, and then MIS. MIS wound up in the hospital. She's... better. Not 100%, and stayed home from work today, but doing better.

well shit. That's no fun at all.

See, I've always said children are little disease vectors. That's why they put that warning on all the lighters: WARNING. KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN.

I'm glad you're at least on the upswing. Now everyone's immune, so there's that. No more being sick, y'all. I don't allow that.

a minor blip on the radar ...... someone walked out of my quiz because I wouldn't accept their wrong answer of heracles when it should have been hercules

My classics teacher in college used to use that alternative spelling/pronunciation too. But they should have stayed and showed you documentation, not walked out.

Yup, cute little vicious disease vectors. Unfortunately, if I try to avoid my own chidlren, I get in trouble with the Family Services people.

Heracles is Greek. Hercules is Roman. (At least as I was taught.)

This was how I learned it as well.

For a long time it seemed if it was just before Christmas, I had to take my son to the doctor on Saturday morning, when the pediatrician's office was full of sick kids and might get another doctor. Nowadays, when he's home from college, sometimes have to buy those cold medicines you need to get from the pharmacist to make sure you weren't involved in cooking illicit drugs. Glad to hear that all are well/recovering.

When the names were similar, we got the Roman form, only going Greek for distinct, like Aphrodite - Venus. Roman form was more common.

The question was ......... Who died from wearing a shirt steeped in centaurs blood?
This quiz by the way is only for a few friends mostly or for anyone that asks to join, in a private chatroom run by me online. All they get is points but my oh my some of them get very uptight about their points! Friendships have been won and lost over single points!

Interesting. Poked in a couple - definitely stuff one could work on.
At one time (may still have them) University of Houston had TV courses. Primary distribution was for students virtually on campus who could proved feedback thru some means (didn't see, but could see professor's response and statements about their being in a different location). The local PBS affiliate would broadcast them during the middle of the night and my wife would tape them. I remember in particular an English and a Geology class.
Right now not interested in taking any classes, but am keeping a couple of lines with the department open.

Last night I dreamed I was run off the road into a snowbank by angry Chinese hockey fans who were upset about the outcome of a game. I knew that's who they were because previously in the dream there had been an announcement over a loudspeaker that we should take cover from the angry Chinese hockey fans.

I'm going to award a bouquet, a bottle of champagne and a big cup of coffee to whoever comes up with the most amusing interpretation of this. Cause, y'know, wtf?

Do you remember how many angry Chinese hockey fans there were? This is important because it effects which winter Olympiad this is about.

First off, the Chinese do have a pair of hockey teams. The men's team has won every game they've played against Macau, Thailand, Luxembourg, Serbia, and Serbia and Montenegro. (source). The women are much stronger and will be playing in the Olympic tournament, with a Finnish Head coach, they have something to prove against Canada, the US and Finland, since they are ranked 9th overall coming into Vancouver.

I interpret this to mean that a BIG upset is gonna happen next month with the Chinese ladies landing a spot on the podium because the USA failed to feed its players enough Kansan whole grains. This sad outcome will be due to the Olympic bread sponsor's delivery vehicle being run off the road by a bunch of crazed Chinese hockey fans at the Kansas-Nebraska border after the men losing to Thailand in a hard-contested ping-pong game.

Canada, of course, will win GOLD.
