i chose vertical because i thought it looked more "nesteled" i think the big hoop of metal dangling from the hood would look funny... the 2 silver ballls (and i'm getting a new one with a little red jewel imbeded into the balls at either end) are just a very nice decorational piece... the horizionatal also has a higher risk of snagging on things.
