I will be interested to hear how you do with this. I'm a guy who feels pretty much the same as you do. Unless I'm going out with colleagues, I tend to dine alone and don't hit the bar. My work travel is kicking up significantly for the next few months and I too would like to force myself out of my comfort zone.

I’ll post updates - successful or not lol. I feel like I’ll have more than my fair share of awkward and embarrassing moments. With the work that I do, it’s expected keep myself separated from forming relationships outside of work unless I have to entertain potential business clients/partners or meet with a higher up, so I’m definitely on my own while traveling.

I’ve been in that situation before (and still am, to an extent)—work during the day and then maybe a client dinner, then that’s it. As others have said, bars are your friend—have a drink or two and strike up a conversation with the bartender. At worst, you’ll get interesting takes from someone who probably doesn’t mind the chat. At best, others at the bar will join in and you’ll find yourself in nice conversations that develop naturally (don’t feel forced).
