Since the word actually means "A dirty, slovenly woman," and refers to a woman who can't say yes or no for herself, how lacks any self-agency and has had sex with more men than the speaker approves of-- you'd be astonished at how many women understand the negative connotations of the word.

Agreed, which is why I'd take offense if a woman called me a slut (unless I KNEW she meant it in jest), but why I've come to take it as a compliment from men who know me intimately. Getting back to the original question; in my humble opinion the word slut has lost its sting entirely, except maybe among high schoolers bullying each other on Facebook. If you want to call yourselves names during sex games I can think of way more offensive words, many of which I've used during rugby and hockey.
