I read this thread with a great deal of interest and recognition. I've been an emotional sadist for some time, I suppose - interesting to see it described from the masochist's side.
I agree, it is highly tricky and many issues and minefields are involved. But I definitely recognize the dynamic. I had one submissive lover who was a cutter, and suffered from bouts of extreme self-doubt and accusation. I won't go into detail, but we experimented with externalizing that so she was forced to recognize and claim it. The results were ...intense, and I'm not sure they were ultimately successful, but it was a wild ride at the time.
