eXOTICA- a salon

a tentative flexing of the fingers...

It's a wormjimitie world where the westerlie blows
a hurburldie of horrors
that mirrors the growth of brothers
at war on opposing teams.
The women of Moran all wail
their sympathies as their lords
plunder and pillage, village after village
from blue moon to pink
as herfillinites howl their half-starved
protests, grieving suc-oppulent
losses on a rose-dry westerlie.

good luck figuring that one out. lol

My first thought was Lear and Carroll ... but it changes. Do we have to figure your personal mythology out? And its not that hard :D You move from nonsense to complete sense to again, nonsensical. ;) :rose:

Where is Fly these days! :D

Yes, Lewis Carroll - definitely. Nonsense - sense - nonsense, sounds like my life.

Fly's tying one on - a fly sheet that is. :D

LOL Fly is also the name of an after hour - get your ecstacy here - bar :D

Your life makes more sense than many lives. Now, if only I could breath through this computer screen. ;)

ROFLOL :D

Now get to work on a definition of a poetic form that could be deemed EXOTICA. I obviously know that semiotics are utmost. A monkey and his banana ;) or whatever, a lulling snow, perhaps an avalanche, a worm could be erotic or exotic in context depending on how Boo looks at it.

How is this. Is hot and erotic/exotic sexy slow or is it fast paced?

Exotica

temperature
hot

Colour
vivid

Rythmn

Scents
Jasmine and saffron
The smoke from hookahs
Manly sweat

slow like blues is sure
the river rolls falls
to crash in jazz
I am drenched
in rhythm
the hot drip
of a tenor bell burns
the skin of my sun
cools when night
kisses the keys
with sweet discord

Oh, I almost disagree. Slow and sensuous are nice, but there is something to be said in that hard and fast slapping that almost hurts because it touches too deep.

Extremes are where we'll find the Exotica
out there at the limit
of our comfort zone. At that place where pain
and pleasure strike a balance, where cold is blistering
and hot is soothing.

Manly sweat is only acceptable
if accompanied by a whiff
of a partner's exertion.

In my case, feminine. I like to mark my man with my scent.

The only limits in colour should be white and black, one being the presence of all and one being the absence of the same. You decide if it's light or matter, no matter.

Wormjimitie is my new favorite word. I just can't decide if it is an interjective, an expletive, or a fishing bait!

If I said "Hey, baby, wanna come over to my place for some wormjimitie?" would you check your watch, wrinkle your nose, or slap me?

And I agree with Champagne's addendum to Trsitesse' spectral definition-- neither fast nor slow is ruled out, only that it be sensual. The understanding has to take place on a molecular level, something stored on those vestigial stretches of DNA passed down from our furry ancestors. Exotica can't be something you know, it has to be something you feel!

CharleyH seems to be on Sabbatical, so I'm gonna intrude here for a few... that ok with y'all?

Here we go...

Flyguy says "CharleyH proposes a new form: exotica."

"Exotic" will mean different things to different people, but it certainly means going somewhere unfamiliar."

Pat says...
"I think anywhere that is very different from one's own norm would qualify."

WSO says "maybe style is the key."

Anna brought us this... Exotica Submission Call

What We Want

Exotica: things excitingly different or unusual; esp: literary or artistic items
Dazzle us. Give us something we've never heard or seen before. Short scenes, personal essays, one-act erotica, creative non-fiction, single photos -- anything that doesn't fit into our normal sections. Unique, interesting, sexy, fun -- these are the key words. Great writing is always helpful too. Keep it anywhere from 300 - 2000 words. We'll showcase your work for four weeks, and provide bio and links.

Email submissions to: "exoticasub at cleansheets.com" (replace " at " with "@" and no spaces).

and Charley intersperses... "Well, I thought since this was a sex site, then the erotic would always have a place. 'Exotica' could be the form of it, the unfamiliar, unexplored terrains of sexuality, of the sexual mind, and as I think and my own mind twirls ... every movement from the surrealists (before and after) always had certain similar features. In which case, shouldn't we come up with an 'Exotica Manifesto'? Since I cannot think of a better group of erotic poets than on Lit ... Why shouldn't it be us?

Why let it be others?"

and Spike advised...

Boston Combat Zone
Could of been seventy maybe sixty-nine
the old Boston combat zone feeling fine
rolled into a bar, me and my shipmate
couldn't fine a chick, did a double take
it was a gay bar, things got caothic
maybe exotic but no way erotic

Never confuse the two. You'll have to take shots or worst."

and Boo pops in w/ "Does Exotica have to be Erotica?"

and Charlry pops back w/ "Define the difference. This is a good idea on this thread. How so? Form, words? How do you distinguish as a poet and/or a reader?"

and again Boo says (cuz no one has yet convinced her that exotic must be sexual) "I'm just wondering why, if you are considering a new form to give birth to here, does it have to include erotic? Couldn't the definition just say that Exotica is sometimes erotic, but not always?"

a wonderful definition from Tris...

Damn you concrete sequentialists! I was just gonna let exotica flow through my veins like a shot of wormjimitie: now we have to pin it down and pry its jaw open. :D

:rose: for Boo, thank you for your comment and for your hard work pushing the boundaries and getting me to think beyond my self.

:rose: for fly because wormjimitee is everything you'd like it to be.

how's this:

Exotic Poetry - that which pushes the poet's comfort zone, dissolves the boundaries of both reader and writer. Goes beyond 'normal' and wipes away stereotypical expectations.

hmm too UNspecific...

does a change of 'voice' make a piece exotic?

Lookin’ outside you’ll see ‘em,
Signs of Spring,
winter lambs roamin’ free in the fields
near-tupped tails, waggin’
in the westerly
cherry trees weepin’ for joy
and buds fattenin’ to burst.
Pity there’s only me to see ‘em.

Not that one! At least, not for you. Way too Kiwi! :D

You should do an audio poem sometime: I'll bet that accent is nectar in the flower!

you don't want to hear me... besides, i don't have an accent.

:D

...way too kiwi? geez. talk about stereotyping! :p

exotica - an exercise in form, should
  • include a word or a phrase in a different language than the one the poem is written in
  • use colloquialisms common to the geographic location the poem is set in
  • make the poet uncomfortable, through the use of vulgar words or the description of activities or functions, otherwise taboo in their usual work
  • widely and wildly vary the rhythm throughout the poem
  • explore a time, place or object the poet finds unusual
  • possibly be illustrated with the above-mentioned item
That's just a few of my thoughts, nailing exotica ;) down.

I think exotica ought to:
  • wrap over a man's bent back
  • rest its hand on a man's ass
  • wear no clothing
Oh, and whisper things like "my name's xxxotica" in his ear.

:p

I agree with the first part of this, but not the second. Exocita should make the poet uncomfortable due to the widening (or dissipation) of any self imposed boundaries.

guess that word 'vulgar' kind of blindsided me.

I disagree with numbers 3 and 4.

Let's nail 'er down even harder then.

exotica as a form would be well served by using at least three of the following ideas or guidelines to shape the form:
  • include a word or a phrase in a different language than the one the poem is written in
  • use colloquialisms common to the geographic location the poem is set in
  • make the poet uncomfortable, be it through rhythm variance, thematic difficulties or emotional proximity
  • define the sensual or erotic
  • explore a time, place or object the poet finds unusual
  • possibly be illustrated with the above-mentioned item
If anyone else has anything (besides my avatar ;) ) to include then add them on and let's discuss what we all would like to see.
