Hello From My Englishness

An Englishman emerges...

Hi!

I'm EH, still fairly new to Lit, and I was told this thread was a good one to join for British Lit users.

The conversation seems to be very fluid, so I just wanted to say hi! Hoping to meet some new people :)

EH

P.S. Feeling more covid-crazy than covid rage at the moment :D although I did have a little rant at my cactus for leaning over in his new pot so perhaps the two have merged...

Hello and welcome, EH. So, our thread has a reputation for something good??? Curious. From personal experience, it's also a good one for those non-Brit Litsters, such as myself, who often find themselves gravitating to the Brits in the room.

I think you are being kind with the "very fluid" description of our conversations. There are definitely some topics unexpected for a sex site...such as trifle. I hope that you and your cactus work things out. I have a terrible rapport with succulents, all houseplants really, so have no words of advice for you.

Best thing would be to treat the cactus the same way as you would a triffid or trifle... the choice is yours!

<wanders in, sniffs EH's trouser leg cautiously....seems OK.....saunters to Angelica for ear rub>

Hey, Dragon..... If your pooch fancies recreating Ralph & Herbie* let me know

*what, no fans of Cheech & Chong? Damn, I'm getting old!

I'm sure he would. I'll check when he wakes up

I'm sure he would. I'll check when he wakes up

With this shielding he's only just socialising, has no concept of distancing and needs a mentor like you to show him the ropes.

Welcome EH, i think you and your cactus will do just fine here. Unless cactus was a euphemism... Its hard to tell round these parts.

I actually bought houseplants just before lock down that are actually still alive! My own personal lock down victory.

Welcome back Ruthie.

My victory is managing to keep alive a Lidl basil plant for over 3 weeks now. Small victories...

Thanks Reaper! That's good to know because he really needs to get out and socialise :p

You'd think so but in this case no, just a little cactus that I found in a bargain bin so I brought it home, it now lives in a mug.

Nice! Always have to celebrate the little victories. Mine seems to still be alive but it hasn't gotten any bigger so not 100% sure.

Hi.
I'm new around here to. (I'm not really, I used to be very popular, but then I got the clap)

Anyhoo, welcome along. I love your conversation fluid comment. Eclectic, random and very accepting, a great bunch.

I was about to shout that basil was my least favourite herb. Then I realised I meant bay leaf.

Bay leaf is the shitest of herbs. No flavour, just goes hard, and you end up with a f*ing piece of plastic in your food.

Mints a good herb. Mojito or roast lamb! Best of all worlds.

In lockdown news. Homeschooling hit a pot hole yesterday. Teaching THE APOSTROPHE... (Give one part of it even said people argue over the correct placement, didn't help)

I get it's
And possession,

But I don't do good* with English rules

Get what you mean about the bay leaf, had casseroles with and without one and couldn't tell the difference.

Cardamom pods for me though, accidentally bite one of those and your meal is ruined.

Totally agree about cardamom, it's an abomination

Thanks Ruth!

That sounds like a good potential tagline for this thread, seeing that a sudden herb hating session seems to have arisen...

… To which I will add: What's the deal with coriander!? It smells and tastes like grass clippings!

It is but adds a lot added late on to a curry.

I hardly dare say it ........ but I will and blame it on Covid madness........ All green herbs are the devils work

Mojitos!! Why ruin perfectly good rum by adding an ingredient that makes it taste like a compost bin? Coriander root is fine, but the leaves .... horrible, nasty, bitter examples of gribbley fodder and don't get me started on parsley - what did any poor fish ever do to deserve parsley?

Erm, I'll exit left now :D :rose::rose::rose:

I'll keep that in mind Ironfan, next time I make a curry :)

No no that was true before COVID-life. I used to work in a bar and despised making Mojitos, a pain to make and clean.

Parsley... I got nothing but will take your word for it :D

When I worked behind a bar, we had a regular old lady came in every sunday for Snowballs, absolute pain!

While I don’t necessarily agree with all your thoughts on herbs, I am certainly loving the way you have expressed them. :D
And a new word...gribbley... I love new words.

I just want to express love for the word coriander not needing translated into cilantro. Although I had a friend who used the American pronunciation of oregano and now I can't make myself stop it...

I know our “bay-zul” is your “baz-il”.
I guess I haven’t yet heard a Brit say oregano. 🤔

ETA: Just took a listen. Your oregano is much closer to the Italian.
