Hello From My Englishness

I have a jar of nutella that's been in the fridge for 18 months.
Coopers Oxford thick cut marmalade is my special treat
Vegemite rather than marmite
Custard cream biscuits for dunking

:D Poly, you'll never get that nutella out of that jar without a chainsaw
Not tried vegemite, I'll stick it on the 'to do' list
Dunking custard creams ..... but the cream will melt

Yes Pol, love to dunk a custard cream. Second only to a chocolate hobnob!

I don't remember if that was one of the foods that Allia used to try to trap...Roland, was it?

I don’t know. But I gave her the tip.
Usually the exterminator use peanut butter. But my experience was that when some were killed by this smell they didn’t take the bait. I then changed it to Nutella and it worked perfect!

And yes, she named it Roland. :)

All this nattering about food...

  • Nutella: nasty stuff though at a festival I was given some churros with a little pot of Nutella to dip them in...very nice (though it was probably because I was so hungry)
  • Marmalade: the peel is what makes it marmalade (surely?) - otherwise it's just jam
  • Vegemite: Marmite is to Vegemite what Liberace is/was to Bobby Crush...a feeble imitation
  • Dunking custard creams: Have you no self respect? :D

Now, to throw food lovers a curve ball (and as much as American cheese, by-and-large, is crap) one of my favourite 'arrived yesterday' breakfasts when visiting the US was wholemeal toast & grits with cheese and bacon and loads of black pepper.

Grits?! Ghastly. Next you'll be telling us you enjoyed tapioca and semolina at school...

Now I don't want to ignite the Marmite/Vegemite wars here (although there's a clear winner and it isn't Vegemite :D) but you can't imitate something when you were invented first... Marmite 1902, Vegemite 1922.

Tapioca - no, that was too much like frog spawn but semolina.... not too bad

Frogspawn and cement when served at school. Semolina if left in the dish used to set hard when cold. Needed a hammer and chisel to break it.

The only time I ever had marmite was as a preteen when I used to get sent off on cycling youth hostel holiday groups. Marmite sandwiches was the staple packed lunch.

I feel we may need popcorn now ......... :)

Good to see you. :rose:

Love the new AV.

I have to admit that I have been a bit turned off to Nutella once I found out it was mostly sugar and palm oil. Allia was the one who told me about it. I know she likes the Gü brand, which you guys have in the UK, but is not here yet. I have tried Justin's Chocolate Hazelnut & Almond Butter. It's good, but doesn't have the same sweetness.

I tried marmalade once, not a fan of the peel either.

Never had either of these, but had never even heard of bovril before being on an earlier iteration of this thread. I'm even worse at being British than you, NRP. ;)

I have always said I am a truly terrible Brit at times. I rarely drink, I hate the taste of whisky, I do not like Bovril or Marmite, Sausage is alright and no-one can tell which part of the UK I am from when they hear me most of the time. On the flipside, I do like Haggis..

Custard creams are the secretly most underrated biscuit ever. It never gets the love it deserves.

I was also thinking that about the Nutella. I dont know how long it will take to soften that bad boy.

I hate to say it Nick but I am 1 for 4 on those points. Nutella is great, I think you can have rindless marmalade, the vegimite one I will give you but custard creams can be drowned (sorry, dunked) in anything.

I feel we may need popcorn now ......... :)

I will have the grab bag of maltesers thanks. Wonder how many I can fit in my mouth in one go...

Got to take issue there. Plain chocolate digestives are almost an afterthought on most supermarket shelves, but so, so good. Custard creams I can take or leave. Mostly the latter :)

Tesco do chocolate Rich Tea's, they're very dunkable too but they get messy quickly

Most biscuits are ruined by dunking as is the tea into which they are dunked.

A rusk, however, becomes vaguely edible when moistened.

I know a few things that become edible when moistened (or is the other way round.)

I'll get my coat!!

I've always found the Rich Tea to be too dry to eat without dunking and too soggy (to the point of collapse) once dunked. Not that I'm a fan of dunking, that is the Devil's work! :)

Rusk is soggy baby food . Hob nobs or Aldi stem ginger cookies react positively in the tea

Biscuits in tea....that's some sort of beverage molestation, surely?

However, cheese on toast dunked into tomato soup....Mmmm

OMG!!! Nick, horror of horrors!! :D:D I'm gonna laugh at this one for a long time .... then try it :)
