Holiday Traditions and Perversions

I often make shortbread at christmas time - a tradition from my family. idk if I will get to it this year or not.

the main tradition of the last couple of decades is to host my in laws for 3-5 days, with a whole series of activities and excellent food and conversation, christmas eve late night services, more gifts than any 4 adults could possibly need, but enjoyed wholeheartedly nonetheless. And then celebrating their anniversary on boxing day.

This year, none of that will happen as they both died recently and I have no heart for any of my usual holiday things. Forgoing the tree and everything.

My dad always loved to have marzipan for christmas. In memory of him, I always love to have marzipan at chrsitmas too... usually a pig, though the fruit ones are fine in a pinch.

Oh Cassie, I'm so sorry to hear this. 2021 sucks just as badly as 2020 did. It's tough going thru the first holidays after losing loved ones as we scramble to find new paths and roles in the day.

I missed this at the thread cutoff.

I’m so sorry!

The Gävle Goat burned in the early morning hours.

It survived pretty well this year! It’s only a week until Christmas Eve. They must have found some new chemicals to douce the goat with. :D

Yup. Double fences and cctv have helped, but drunk is drunk.
Someone joked about the guy they apprehended, that with the description in the media of him being enigmatic, tall, athletic, in his 40, hed be a hit on Tinder. :D

I forgot to add the smashing of the pumpkins, squashes and the gourds.

Sometime on Christmas Day we break out our giant handmade sledgehammer. It’s basically a 10”x10” x 18” log that I put through a band saw, then attached it to an ax handle. It weighs about 20 lbs. then we smoosh all of the leftover pumpkins, squash and gourds in a manic killing spree.

Then we collect the seeds for next years pumpkin and gourd patch. (We have a small farm.) the punkin guts and skins etc are composited. We started doing this about 5 years ago on Christmas Day.

Well that’s definitely a unique tradition. :)

I found Braunscheiger (???) for my mom. I love liver and patè, but that stuff is SO salty. She also likes pickled HERRING on saltines for New Years. 😩

Love me some pickled herring

Got home everything for making the herring today. Will only be making two kinds and give some of it to a friend because we are not as many at the Christmas celebration as usual as two people are travelling.
I guess it will get done tuesday. Perhaps earlier if I find the time.

I’m a drink-some-scotch-while-others-trim-the-tree kind of guy, but I bet this was a wonderful experience.

Well, nice thought but plans kinda fell through.

I'm still looking at a naked tree and have just about decided its not worth it at this late date. The lights are on, cats are happy underneath it. (they think the tree skirt is put down fresh, solely for their lollygagging)

What more do I need?

Scotch, obviously. :rose:

For me I traditionally bake cookies. Not just chocolate chip, sugar, white chocolate chip, and pretzel, snickerdoodle, and oatmeal chocolate chip.

Then my husband delivers them to everyone.
Let me send you my address for that delivery!

No real holiday traditions here. Neither my husband nor my son's are big into Christmas so I kind of do what makes me happy. Decorations are a must, I try to get my tree up the day after Thanksgiving (USA version.) And then cookies! I made 4 different kinds, plus 3 various fudges.
When they boys were little I always got them PJ's, a stuffed animal and a movie for Christmas Eve. Which we'd all watch together. I rather miss those days.

'Che! Great to see you.

3rd batch of yo-yos made but only one batch of rum balls so far this year. Quasi-auntie is making not one, not two but three cheesecakes this year!! Apparently I won't like one of them but still that means everyone else will and I'll have two all to myself err ... I mean to share equally.

One more tradition…

Mom having a meltdown on the 23rd because the linen closet/bathroom cabinet/some other closet that no one particularly cares about and definitely won’t be spending their Christmas looking at, hasn’t been organized.

Good lord I hope I’ll never turn into her.

My dad always used to clean like crazy all night before Christmas Eve and then fall asleep during the celebration. I think we have stopped him from hanging out the windows cleaning them this year, but I’m afraid to check up on him.

We did our own tradition of Little Christmas Eve with good food and a cozy evening together.

Baking the pecan pies tomorrow morning. The pie dough is already resting in the refrigerator.

Merry Christmas to all my fellow Christmas Eve celebrators! 🎄
