We had both. Contact paper (sticky-backed plastic) with fun colors or patterns were in a higher cool tier than brown kraft paper book covers 😂
Here it was all clear and colourless (can't see why that would be called contact paper as its obviously no paper, here it's contact plastic). I have a faint memory that my older sisters had colours and even some not see-through, but those went totally out of style before I went to school.
 
I remember when Gutenberg came up with this crazy idea for mass-producing text.
Until then the only way we could troll our friends was with individual, laboriously written messages with quills on vellum. The laundry bill from the ink spatters was horrific. Not to mention the speed of communication meant that our barbed witticisms often lost context by the time the notes were received.
Johannes said to me one day over a pint, "What if we could generate multiple versions of the same message so we can spam the fuck out of everyone?"
And the printing press was born, ushering in an age of mass misinformation unlikely to be seen again.
