I mean, we all need whatever base level to interest us but a whole lot of tribalism we do is driven by the emotions behind the thing and not the thing itself. This is something that I like too, because it's not political. Thing is, I wouldn't be able to create a story on this because I personally am not passionate about sports or teams. I absolutely do not understand why the fan of team A, dislikes people who support team B. Even if I was a fan of a sports team, if someone came up to me and said that they support a different team, I wouldn't dislike them for it. If anything, it would make watching sports with them more interesting. I think.
Boy whose Dad died young from working himself to death in a factory but ALWAYS and ONLY took gamedays off meets girl who grew up with 3 brothers and was iced out of everything b/c "girl" taught herself the game/players/rivalries, etc. basically forcing her bros and Dad's hand into including her (and, she's more knowledgeable 'bout it too)
Again, emotions behind things is what we do as writers (and as human beings.)
It's understandable if the surface thing doesn't grab you but it can be fascinating exploring the "why" questions instead of starting with the answer to the test.
