Interview with a Writer

OMFG.... me too. It makes me cringe.

shudders

I hate it!

And I'm glad Britwitch has more dilligent cowriters than myself, otherwise we wouldn't see her writing nearly enough. What I like is the breadth of characters and stories she takes on and, for someone who's so good, she pretty much gives anyone competent a chance.

And confession: I've laughed with her often on the mutilation of language, so much so that she has me in feats of laughter (much needed usually) and if she peaks my interest one more time I'll be eternally greatful.

Oh you...

blushes

...thanks, handsome! Am still extremely thrilled you chose to write something with me in the first place!

winks

Dialog is the bestest!
Crunching ice is the worstest!
I miss writing with the Witchiest!

Thanks lovely!

And Deeva is awesome. End of. :rose:

Finally, a Dee profile!

I've never written with you, but I've certainly respected your musings from afar as you well know.

I now have to go back and check on some to refresh my memory.

We oldies forget sometimes...*smiles*

:rose:

Okay, but you have to stop referring to yourself as old. You and I are too close in age for you to drag me down into old age with you. Not cool Mr. Fishy.

smiles and hugs her friend

Yet still she refuses to write with me...

le pine

huffs and stomps her foot

I don't recall ever refusing you anything pretty lady.

I admit I don't take the time write on Lit in threads any longer, but never refused you.:p

Good thing.

After a bit of a break from the holidays, we're back!

I don't know who "we" are, necessarily, but back we are.

And since Vail was bugging me about getting this going again, she gets to...

WAIT! Ahhhhh ha ha ha ha!

Next up, Tess!

What is your screenname? thestruggle

Why did you choose that? Something about the struggle against dark thoughts or something. The struggle of submission, etc.

Why did you choose the av and/or sig you're currently using? I like cutting off dresses. I also tend to like pictures that hint at something sinister? So the AV has got the guy holding the scissors to her heart, and I thought that image was arresting.

Location? The midwest!

Age? 25.

Sex/Gender/Gender Identity? Cis female.

Race? White.

What is it that you enjoy about writing SRPs? Getting to push my boundaries. Getting to challenge my co-writers.

What is it that you enjoy about writing in general? The formation, I guess. The plotting and then the fruition of the plot, the stride I get to hit. It's pretty exhilarating. I get gleeful when I write, it's just fun. I mean, it's fucking hard work but it doesn't necessarily feel that way. Sometimes it sucks, sometimes I'm writing something that I'm not all that jazzed about, but it always creates something and that's pretty cool.

What inspiration do you use to write? It depends. Sometimes things will pop into my head and it's like I've got to get it out or else I'll be distracted forever. It can be a picture or a combination of things. Mostly I just look at the world and think, “I could write about that” about everything I see.

Do you write with something on (music, TV, etc), or silence? Sometimes music. If I'm writing something horribly boring, like a structured essay, I may have the TV on. But I get kind of manic when I write, kind of temperamental and distraction can really irritate me. It all depends on what I'm writing. If it's a character piece and I have to get into a particular frame of mind, the background noise will probably be very specific or I'll need silence.

Do you edit your posts? Yes. Editing is the most important part about writing, in my opinion.

If so, do you do so as you write, or after finishing? Both. If I don't edit, I'll hate what I put out there. It'll feel half-assed and sloppy, and that's just annoying.

What character you've created is your favorite, and why? Probably Beth, for Etham, but that's also the one that I've invested in the most emotionally. So it could just be I understand her the most and thus she comes to mind first? I have other characters that I've written that I really enjoy but that's content that I don't put up, just in case I decide to try and publish.

What character you've created is your least favorite, and why? The stupid cherry farm character. I don't even remember her name, but it was a huge compromise and not what I had in mind at all.

What is your favorite thread you are or have been involved in? Etham and Massacre.

What is your favorite thread you were not involved in? The original Massacre.

Outside of Lit, what do you read? Everything! I'm always reading. I even read while I'm watching TV or eating lunch. Books, articles, forums, everything.

What is your favorite thing about the way you write? Probably my thoroughness. I like being able to look at a movie or story and see the plot points, see the different devices. I like being able to pick things apart like that structurally. It sounds boring but it's those minutiae that make me happy. Understanding the psychology of things, too. I always say it's like turning over rocks and seeing what's underneath.

If you could change one thing about the way you write, what would it be? My thoroughness, haha. My word count. Basically my need to describe everything.

What is your favorite word? Ravenous.

What is your least favorite word? Moist.

What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally? Attention to detail, premeditation, lack of control. A healthy dollop of fear. I know, twisted, blah blah.

What turns you off? Banality. Laziness, underhandedness.

What is your favorite curse word? Fuck and probably cockmuncher.

What sound or noise do you love? Buttons being scattered on a wood floor is a good one. Whistling tea kettles. When my dogs snore, haha.

What sound or noise do you hate? Crying. It makes me feel so damn helpless, I hate that feeling. The sound of cars speeding past my house – slow the fuck down!

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Conservation, landscaping. I'd like to make social activism more of a central part of my life but I also don't think I should get paid for doing the right thing. To be honest, I'm pretty happy with being a writer.

What profession would you not like to do? Selling insurance or to work on Wall Street.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? “I know, I can't believe this shit either.”

What is your favorite word? Ravenous.
Ravenous is a delicious word.
If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? “I know, I can't believe this shit either.”
I seriously cracked up laughing over this!

SB this thread was a great idea. Being I don't really know people that well here, it's a cool way to find out a little about them.

Ravenous is a delicious word.

I seriously cracked up laughing over this!

It is! I tend towards "R" words: rapacious, rapscallion, ravage, etc.

And I firmly believe that the prevailing attitude in Heaven would be one of bewilderment.

Why did you choose that?
Honestly? I don't remember. I'm pretty sure that the mispelling of 'Vail' (instead of 'Veil') is unintentional.

Why did you choose the av and/or sig you're currently using?
I like purple.

What is it that you enjoy about writing SRPs?
I don't write SRPs. I know that sounds silly, but I'm pretty sure you'd be hard pressed to find me writing anything you could call an SRP anytime in the past year. I do write, from time to time, in RPs.
Writing, for the most part, is an inherently solitary event.
Someone once said, in relation to comics, that we keep waiting for comicbooks to be like rock and roll. That we keep waiting to be rock stars and have screaming fans while we write or whatever. I think this applies to all genre writing (I tend towards genre works).
But it just isn't going to happen. Its not how the medium works.
There are moments, sure. You give readings. You work with an editor, things like that. But for the most part, you are alone. And, for the most part, your work is read alone. The only interaction between you and your audience takes place after the fact.
Anyhow, I RP to connect with other writers, to not be doing it alone. It also makes me a better writer, if I'm with someone I care about.
If you look back at You Don't See What We See, you'll see what amounts to an exercise in trying to impress Chasnicolette. I'm also working out my voice, and that's much easier with someone who is talking right back at me.
Almost every RP I've been in has had some specific aspect of my writing involved in a way to allow me to explore that aspect.

Massacre was about crazy. About going deep, deep, deep into strange places.

Language Of Angels was about play, and bringing my voice down to earth again.

I don't think I could have done any of that without co-writers.

What is it that you enjoy about writing in general?
Reaching out. Connecting. Words that run along skin like fingertips, or fingernails (as I am so fond of saying)
The moment of creation happening without any thought, just rushing out like there's no tomorrow, like the whole of what I am, at that moment, is what is showing up on the page.

What inspiration do you use to write?
Fuck inspiration.
Inspiration is a lie.
To write, I put my brain to work, dancing, free associating, playing. Eventually I find what becomes my seed crystal, the thing the rest of my post or story or scene crystallizes around. Sometimes its a particular scene, sometimes its a phrase or word or image. SOMETHING that the entire rest of the bit I'm working on builds around.
Most of the time, it's something no one else would notice, something that isn't very important in the big picture, but it's the thing that gave my access, gave me a foothold.

Do you write with something on (music, TV, etc), or silence?
Silence. I'm far too easily distracted and my words, and the layout, are far too rhythm oriented to allow for sounds.

Do you edit your posts?
Before I post? Sure. But not as much as I do non-RP stories. There's an improvisational aspect to RPs that I don't like interfering with.
After? Once in a blue moon.

If so, do you do so as you write, or after finishing?
How does one NOT edit as they write? I don't understand this question.

What character you've created is your favorite, and why?
Probably Rebecca Garrote. This will, no doubt, please the Fishie.
But, that said, I really do have a hard time picking.
Aeon was never fully realized, and she was, in an important sense, the first of what I write now.
Aella is wonderful, confident, powerful, and funny. I think she's probably the most complete character I've written in an RP.

What character you've created is your least favorite, and why?
I think that Tessa was my least favorite character. Fun as hell to write, but she isn't real. Even the coven in her head, they aren't real. They are all kind of two-dimensional. But, of course, that's the whole point.

What is your favorite thread you are or have been involved in?
Probably Massacre. There was something truly special about that moment. I've spent a lot of time thinking about what made that work and why it'll never happen again, probably.

What is your favorite thread you were not involved in?
I don't read other people's threads. I don't know why. Then again, there's so few lesbian threads...
I was always a little jealous I wasn't in Last Daughter Of Krypton or Powers Of Ten.

Outside of Lit, what do you read?
Comics, SF, Horror, genre works, YA. I look for writers with a poetic voice.

What is your favorite thing about the way you write?
My voice. I think it's mine. It's distinctive. It makes me look more talented than I actually am.

If you could change one thing about the way you write, what would it be?
I'd do it more. Also, I fucking SUCK at plot. I am absolutely horrible at it.

A distinctive voice can represent talent if, in fact, the talent is there. Then it's distinctive AND good. Easy peasy.

And yes - Bec is my favourite character, so I'm glad she's yours too.

Awww, where are your last questions,Vail? I wanted to know your favourite words!

Fuck inspiration.
Inspiration is a lie.
To write, I put my brain to work, dancing, free associating, playing. Eventually I find what becomes my seed crystal, the thing the rest of my post or story or scene crystallizes around. I don't know doll, that idea, that kernel of story comes from somewhere, this feels like splitting hairs.

However! I love writing with you, reading your work and challenging you.

Chugging right along, and nearing 100 posts in this thread now, and so we have another set of answers to put up. This time the person in the spotlight is Light Ice!

What is your screenname? Light Ice

Why did you choose that? It's a pun, of sorts, that I went over with a friend in a stupor when I first started to go to college.

Why did you choose the av and/or sig you're currently using? It was actually chosen for me by a writer on the boards (that I haven't written with, yet). My original AV was a glass with a couple ice-cubes in it. I've had a handful that were plays on the same theme. Different cocktails, etc. I liked the one she chose.

As specific or vague as you would like to be, what is your...

Location?
Northeast US.

Age? Late Twenties.

Sex/Gender/Gender Identity? Heterosexual Male

Race? White

What is it that you enjoy about writing SRPs? There's a certain feeling in written pornography that I've never been able to replicate with the more standard forms. It is rare to find pornographic materials with anything other than visual stimulation. I've always said a good fantasy is more about a feeling rather than a visual. Writing SRPs is much better at capturing that feeling for me.

What is it that you enjoy about writing in general? Writers see the world differently than other people. Writers see connections, threads, and stories in almost everything they encounter. It allows them a certain perspective that's beautiful when projected properly in fiction.

What inspiration do you use to write? It really depends. I've been inspired by various media. I've also been inspired by co-writers. I think the most important inspiration in any of the threads that I've enjoyed, though, has come through dreams. I think everyone saves their most creative and interesting material in their sub-conscious. It's a safe place that we can't quite get to. Dreams are like the iron bars on a prison cell. You can't get in to interact with the prisoners but you can look through the bars and get a glimpse of them.

Do you write with something on (music, TV, etc), or silence? Silence, often in near total darkness. I like sensory deprivation when I'm writing. It allows me to fall into the voice of the narrator.

Do you edit your posts? Seldom. Lit isn't work for me. I try to use as little effort as possible while still being happy with the product.

If so, do you do so as you write, or after finishing? After. Editing while you write is a pretty good way to fuck everything up.

What character you've created is your favorite, and why? My favorite thread was a baseball thread that I wrote with FF. It's still my favorite thread. Ever. My character was a vicious human being when he was introduced. Very intense. I loved the idea of folding him open and using her character to show his gentler parts. I'm a romantic at heart.

What character you've created is your least favorite, and why? Lavicus. He was so pompous that it hurts me to read now.

What is your favorite thread you are or have been involved in? The baseball thread. We had two very difficult and capable characters fleshed out and the story was incredible. It took a lot of time to put together an idea that felt authentic in the modern context while still presenting my character in an almost historical lens. It was the absolute icon of fun for me. It involved one of my favorite games and one of my favorite writers.

What is your favorite thread you were not involved in? I don't really read other people's work unless I'm scouting talent.

Outside of Lit, what do you read? Anything. Everything. In Fiction, lately, I've been big on Cormac McCarthy and Haruki Marukami. There are many things. McCarthy deals with the brutality and beauty of the human experience. Marukami writes elegantly about the emotional and spiritual realities of the individual.

What is your favorite thing about the way you write? My preparation. I map things out to such a ridiculous detail. I love that I can craft entire worlds and put them down before I actually been creating a story within that world.

If you could change one thing about the way you write, what would it be? My preparation. Because I need total darkness to write really well and the amount of time that it takes to prepare often makes it impossible for me to write.

And lastly, the Famous 10 Questions...

What is your favorite word?
Compose. I just like the way it feels when you say it.

What is your least favorite word? Cunt. It just comes off as ignorant and vulgar in most situations.

What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally? Creatively - intense feelings. Spiritually. Art. Emotionally - security.

What turns you off? Cowardice and Irresponsibility.

What is your favorite curse word? Fuck. It just has a certain force to it.

What sound or noise do you love? My dog's tail beating against whatever she's near when I pet her and she wags it.

What sound or noise do you hate? Sniffling. Crying.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Day Trading. There's something satisfying in the analysis and research portions.

What profession would you not like to do? Teaching.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?
It's alright you didn't believe. You lived a decent life and tried your best. That's what matters. The book and its rules were all bullshit, anyway.
