Interview with a Writer

What is it that you enjoy about writing in general? Writers see the world differently than other people. Writers see connections, threads, and stories in almost everything they encounter. It allows them a certain perspective that's beautiful when projected properly in fiction..

I love this, because I feel the same way. I narrate things in my head sometimes as they are happening, or if I am thinking about it later.

We're coming to the last of my original group of responses, and since she tried to keep putting off me posting her answers, she gets to be put up now since she's not around to stop me: It's Alice!

What is your screenname?
saysalice

Why did you choose that?
I needed a screenname that wasn't taken. It's the refrain from an A.A. Milne poem I loved, as a kid (Buckingham Palace).

Why did you choose the av and/or sig you're currently using?
My current av is a placeholder, for the most part. I'm shopping for something new. I chose this one primarily because she has curls, like me. I am also amused by how subtle she seems, in contrast with my general tastes.

As specific or vague as you would like to be, what is your...

Location?
Alberta, Canada.

Age?
33.

Sex/Gender/Gender Identity?
Female.

Race?
Human.

What is it that you enjoy about writing SRPs?
I enjoy the collaboration tremendously - the novel perspectives of my co-writers, and the unexpected ways in which I am inspired by their posts. I also like that, because I don't consider this "serious writing", the words flow more freely than on some of my solo "projects", where I get all hung up on writing well. Good, bad or indifferent, I think you have to write consistently if you want to improve.

What is it that you enjoy about writing in general?
I just have to. It doesn't matter if it's any good, it doesn't even really matter if anyone's reading it - though there is a terrifying thrill I experience, knowing that people are. It pleases me, to express myself in this way, and I write to please myself. I love the way that language can be manipulated to make the reader feel something in particular, or to get inside a character's head and present their point of view - reliable or not. I love how even the shapes of the letters of a word or the sound of it out loud or the look of sentences and paragraphs can all affect how the reader feels, when they are reading a piece. I love how I can get so lost in writing a scene that I'm not even thinking about the words, or even seeing them - that magical, other-wordly moment when it's almost as if the spirit takes over, and I am just the instrument. I sound like a weirdo, probably, but if you get it - hey, awesome.

What inspiration do you use to write?
Turn-ons, real life scenarios, random ideas that I think are brilliant and need a story to make sense of them, and other peoples' writing and ideas.

Do you write with something on (music, TV, etc), or silence?
I usually put on music (something without words, or that I'm not too familiar with), or write in silence. I can't have anything too distracting going on.

Do you edit your posts?
Oh, coooonstantly...

If so, do you do so as you write, or after finishing?
Yes.

What character you've created is your favorite, and why?
I like Regan in Reckless Endangerment, because she is (was?) about as real as I could make her. Even though we are writing "sexual role play" stories, I couldn't in good conscience have Regan begin to enjoy her predicament in that story too soon. I know that victims of abduction and forcible confinement do experience Stockholm Syndrome, and that I can't possibly imagine exactly how and when that develops, but I have to believe that it doesn't happen overnight. At the risk of being unsexy, I tried to stay true to the horror of her plight as much as possible.

What character you've created is your least favorite, and why?
I suppose the character in my first thread here - I can't even remember the name of it - was quite two-dimensional. But to be honest, I haven't developed my characters very far for most of my writing here.

What is your favorite thread you are or have been involved in?
So far, my favorite has been Reckless Endangerment, simply because the story has developed into something more than a one-off as wank fodder, writing exercise or exorcism. A close second is what I'm doing in the Dreamatorium right now, though I'm still uncertain about how I'm going to feel at the end of that.

What is your favorite thread you were not involved in?
Is it cliquey, if I say Etham? Even if I confess that I was reading it before I got to know any of the writers? House of Moonlight and Shadows is also a really fascinating, unsettling read.

Outside of Lit, what do you read?
Um, books? Fiction, mostly. Nothing new in months, though.

What is your favorite thing about the way you write?
I am generally satisfied with the way I set up a scene.

If you could change one thing about the way you write, what would it be?
I am always second-guessing my paragraph breaks and use of grammar and punctuation. I'd like to have a better grasp of what's correct, be fluent in it, so that I can forget about it and just go.

...what a mistake that was...

This was a very good thread idea. I really enjoyed reading about the other Authors here on the forums.
