Huh? "The grinding" is appropriately called tribadism, tribbing (sometimes shortened as "trib"), or frottage. Other names beyond that are slang. Scissoring, for example? A slang name that describes only one aspect of tribadism -- one position. Other positions can be used to trib.

Before I say anything else, 'tribbing' seems such a silly and made up word for it, but I suppose it's a convenient enough shorthand.

I know where you're coming from, Horseylover. Tribbing can be quite a frustrating experience if you both want to climax from it. My girlfriend has never come that way with me, as far as I can remember, and I don't think many of my exes ever did.

I actually had a really nice orgasm when I tribbed with my partner just the other day, at the weekend, but I think that was from a combination of factors - the intimacy, the foreplay beforehand, and a general air of lust that night (I'd been away on a work trip and we hadn't made love for a week).

The problem is, put bluntly, that it doesn't really stimulate your clitoris very much - so depending on how you're wired up, the chances are you won't end up coming.

For most couples, tribbing is nicest as a form of foreplay, as an intimate and cosy build-up to the actual sex. For my girlfriend (actually, she's now my fiancee) and me, it's an opportunity to just enjoy each other, kiss, feel our bodies against each other, and savour a few moments of togetherness.

However, it *is* possible to climax from the act itself, and Horseylover, I hope you and your girlfriend are able to experience this someday, and both of you have lovely orgasms together. If not, at least you can have fun trying!
 
I've already gone over my feelings on this topic, but I disagree that "[tribbing] doesn't really stimulate your clitoris very much" and therefore you aren't likely to orgasm from it. If that were the case, I doubt that it would be a common act. And according to various sources, such as this one and this one, it is common. Ample clitoral stimulation is one of the main reasons women cite that they love tribadism, whether missionary, scissoring or some other position. It's just that some women are better suited for it than others, although every woman is suited for the thigh or knee-to-clit version...even if they can't orgasm from it. Tribadism is not much different than having the pressure of fingers against your clitoris, except that it's a thigh, knee, stomach, some other body part, or the vulva causing the pressure...and that fingers can be more precise.

While it is "a form of foreplay" for some lesbian couples, I wouldn't say that it is only a form of foreplay for most lesbian couples. A lot of lesbians, and women in general, don't like penetration, and some don't like performing oral sex and/or having it performed on them. Some lesbians stick to grinding and external fingering. Others stick to grinding and oral. And so on, and so on. What is "actual sex" means different things to different people. Obviously, which is why the heterosexist view, as well as the male-defined sexuality view, that real sex is only penile-vaginal penetration or vaginal/anal penetration exists.
