. . . one particular character started out very small and ended up becoming the best character in the story, upstaging me in the process and so I just had to kill him off.

The same thing happened to Doyle, and his character Dr. Watson.

After a simular response from the good Dr. D, the result proved so unpopular that he had to backtrack, to reanimate his murdered character.

Although he was a doctor, I am quite certain that rectal mucus formed no part of either his terminating, nor his reanimating compositions.
