List of story lists aka The Literotica Index

I was reading Stacnash lists of authors by the number of stars she would give to each, and it's pretty damned amusing. I'm listed as a "three-star" author, based, I guess, on her reading of one of my stories, and it's one of my more far-fetched, outrageously plotted stories. A clue to the value of Stacnash's rankings lies in the fact that both NoTalentHack and Onehitwanda are in the "Two Star" category, which Stacnash describes as "A list of poor authors who can't be recommended. These writers demonstrated considerable structural problems with dialogue, story, technical errors and were profoundly boring."

Lovecraft is listed in the bottom, one-star category, as is ChloeTzang, and I imagine they're both staying up late at night fretting about that.

To each her own.

Yes. Her list makes no sense. She puts me in the five-star list (yay? I guess?), but backs it up using what might be my least Voboy-like story. It's like saying the Smiths are a great guitar band, then using "How Soon Is Now" as evidence.

I certainly understand the appeal of lists, and our expanded capacity for exploiting them here. I'm a little surprised at the controversy, everyone is free to handle them (or not) however they wish.

Speaking for myself, it's not the lists I find controversial. It's the conclusions some posters (well, okay, mostly just one poster) seem to be drawing from those lists, and from how other posters are choosing to use them. I'm very "live and let live" about these kinds of things; my only real contribution to the topic is to point out how unlikely I am to use the feature at all. But I'd never impugn the motives of those who do.

My attitude: let things evolve and see what happens. Don't prejudge.

As best as I can recall, the only story Stacnash has ever commented on of mine is the one in the lists. I suspect I'd be downgraded if they ever read anything else. LOL Not that the story in question is in any way brilliant or great, but the bait and switch twist apparently put a smile on his/her face.

I still say the day is coming where there are going to be members with lists that will be extremely beneficial to authors. The first big one will likely emerge in Incest, and anyone who makes their thumbs-up list is going to see significant increases in activity on the listed stories. Loving Wives will likely see something similar, but it will be used as a bombing directory as much as it is used as a means to locate stories of a certain type that the reader enjoys. It will eventually spread until virtually every category has one or two members with lists that become a go-to for a lot of the category's readers.

Here's to hoping that none of the "stay away" type lists garner much attention outside of LW, where they will likely thrive. They're more or less inevitable, but I don't see them attracting much attention outside of possibly "Unfinished/Never finishes a chaptered story" lists.

In real life, I like hearing from friends who recommend readings. If Laura at work is a fussy reader, and I know her standards, if she says 'read X!', then I have a pretty good idea of what I'm in for. Same here. It's an expanded index to 'good stuff' which is often hard to find amidst the bustle and volume of output.

Lists can be work, extra work, but no reason they can't be useful, and there are multiple ways to handle them.

I have a more or less 'All time favorite' list at Unrivaled
Then a genre one, since there is no 'Bisexual' category. Bi-ways (which doesn't seem to be live yet, maybe takes time to be posted).
A 'hidden gems' list Buried Treasure for the off-beat quirky tales buried in the underbrush.

And my own list of what I regard as my 'best' work. I wouldn't mind seeing this on other authors' pages. For the highly prolific folks, if I haven't read anything they've done, I wouldn't mind having a shortlist of what THEY consider their best output (regardless of scores or other metrics.)

Thus, self-serving but perhaps useful to potential readers: My own Best Efforts
Yours are added. Thank you.
